Wow, this is the best Chinese food in Austin 8/3/2011

They start with the freshest ingredients and it shows. This is one of my favorite Chinese food places in Austin, it's right up there with T&S. They also have sushi and it's good, but Austin is full of them. Theirs is good, but I much prefer the Chinese. The wait staff is always friendly and the place is perfectly clean. It's a little more expensive than the cheap ones in town, but it's cheaper than high-end and the food is much better. By far the BEST! more

Fantastic Chinese Cuisine plus WiFi service 6/29/2011

This is an outstanding restaurant that specializes in healthy Chinese cuisine. My wife and I tumble across this restaurant after attending a wedding in the Austin area. We have dined at many Chinese restaurants in the Austin area and Dallas areas. We have been disappointed with most of these restaurants, however Dragon Gate by Phoenix was a welcome surprise. it was difficult for us to located in shopping center off Capital of Texas Hwy, but since our first dinning experience this is the only Chinese restaurant we have dined. We found the restaurant quiet, clean, friendly service, and most important NO MSG. we are healthy diners and often seek Chinese cuisine without MSG. In addition to the wonderful dinning experience, the restaurant offers WiFi services to its customers. During, my last visit I was able to enjoy a delicious healthy meal and continue working with limited interruption. I give this restaurant a definite THUMPS UP as does my wife. more

Great food without any hype 5/3/2010

We ate here around 7 (Friday night) and it began to fill up as we were leaving. The server was really right-on. He frequented the table plenty enough times to keep us refilled on drinks, remove used dishes, and bring us whatever we needed. Pros: fresh food, clean more

Worst. Place . Ever 9/3/2009

I ordered their lunch bento box which, per menu , comes with california roll and miso soup. Food tasted very mediocre and they DID NOT GIVE ME MY DARN CALIFORNIA ROLL. I paid $15 for this.. Never again. Stay away from that place. Cons: Expensive, poor service, short your orders more

HOW IS THIS RESTAURANT STILL OPEN? 6/28/2009

HOW IS THIS RESTAURANT STILL OPEN? Ordered shrimp and chicken hibachi take out with salad and soup. EVERYTHING WAS TERRIBLE! Shrimp was way too salty and the chicken was painfully dry and tasteless. Salad dressing tastes like crunchy mustard. After tasting everything, me and my girlfriend decided to throw it out and grab McDonald's (not kidding). This is the first review I've ever written. It was such a terrible experience, I felt everyone should know about it."" Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

Not impressed 8/23/2008

My husband and I went tonight. We absolutely love sushi and were just not impresed with Dragon Gate. We tried the calamari, which was the oddest thing I have ever seen! I am used to round calamari served with a sauce, where tonight it was little sticks served with chopped onions and jalapenos. What?! We also tried the 360 roll and the Spicy Crab roll. I just wasn't impressed. It tasted to me like the seafood was frozen. When our bill came and it was $71 I was just shocked. We could have gone to Truluck's for about $20 more. :-( If you try this place I would stick with the Chineses menu...the couple next to us ordered Chinese food and seemed to enjoy it. Cons: Frozen seafood more

Ok food, bad reviewer 2 people below 4/28/2008

The sushi was not bad. We tried 5 or 6 different rolls and found the Spicy Crab to be the best. The Philly roll was fine as was the shrimp tempura roll and the others we tried, The Volcano roll was quite good as well. We did dislike the soy sauce as it was very strong, which is to bad as I love to have a ton of wasabi in it but just too strong to use. more

great sushi! 3/8/2008

I've been here several times with my boyfriend and we both love the sushi. The rolls are some of the best I've had, not too much rice and a lot of meat. My favorite is the Spicy Crab roll :) The sashimi I think is a little on the expensive side, but once you see the portions you understand why. I haven't had any of the entrees but I definitely recommend Dragon Gate for the sushi. It's always quiet inside and the atmosphere is nice, good place for a date because you can actually hear what everyone at the table is saying. Pros: Really good sushi, big sashimi portions, quiet Cons: Service could be quicker but not a big issue more

FOOD NOT BAD....SERVICE HORRIBLE 8/3/2007

My food didn't taste that bad, however the service was not good at all. When you pay $ 16 for a meal, the person serving you should understand what you and your family are ordering. This is after all America, where the language is English, if someone wants to open a ""service oriented"" biz, they should at least understand English. Our waitress didn't even know what was on their own menu. With all the choices in Austin to eat....I wouldn't waste your time or your money going to this place Pros: LOCATION Cons: SERVICE, FOOD, PRICE more

Low Quality Food; Classless Ownership 5/8/2007

My girlfriend, her cousins, and I met a friend, who had given the restaurant a lukewarm review, at Dragon's Gate for dinner. Our waitress was very friendly and eager to please, but no one was satisfied with the food, which ranged from dull to inedible. Of particular note was the sesame chicken, which, after having been assured it was chicken breast by our waitress, arrived as dark, gristly chunks of chicken detritus. My girlfriend and I gamely cut through each piece, in search of anything edible--no luck. We sent the plate back with our waitress, declining to order anything else. When the bill arrived, though, the sesame chicken was still on it. I assumed the owner would take care of it at the register, but she flatly refused, claiming--despite our waitress' attempts to vouch for us, that we were lying about not having eaten the meal. After discussing our eating habits with her husband, she discounted the meal (not the bill) by 30%--an insulting gesture, at best. Ashamed by the behavior of her classless and miserly employers, our waitress even chased us into the parking lot to try to return her tip. Needless to say, we are never going back, and would encourage you not to do business with these people. Pros: Friendly waitress. Cons: Terrible food; classless ownership. more

AWESOME SUSHI!!! 1/28/2007

My boyfriend and I went there for the first time this past Saturday night and had a wonderful time. The sashimi was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! We also had the Tiffany Roll (which I highly recommend to those who like salmon and unagi) and some chinese dishes. The chinese food was average but the sushi was mouthwateringly delicious! The service was great also. Our waitress never left us feeling unattended and was very attentive and courteous. Couldn't have asked for better service. We will definately be coming back here and i'm recommending this place to all of my friends. Pros: Sushi, Service, Price (for the quality of sushi) Cons: Chinese food pretty average, but I guess that's not really a con more

Quite Elegance 11/12/2006

romantic and quite. weren't many folks there when I went for dinner, but still the service was slow. must've been the sushi we ordered, but it was good when it came. Pros: good sushi Cons: slow service more

Avoid at all costs 6/29/2006

I eat sushi at least three times a week, you could call me a sushi fanatic. Since I moved here a year ago I have been on the hunt for the best place to eat sushi for lunch. First of all, the dining room was very slow and they sat my sister and I right next to two people, we were so close it was very uncomfortable. The menu offered 6 lunch specials, I have never seen a menu that had the same roll on every special (california). I asked the waitress if she could change the roll on the $12 lunch special to a Phili roll but she had problems understanding English. The manager came to the table and informed me that there would be a additional $4 fee for the change. She told me the special came with a soup and salad. My sister ordered a Phili roll and a Spider roll. My iced tea was empty for at least 15 min. They brought out my special and 15 min later my sisters meal. No salad or soup was brought out at any time. I was presented the check, and quickly realized that this meal was a huge mistake. I went to pay and a woman, who I felt was the owner, who was unapologetic and very rude to me about the bad experience. The sushi on a scale from 1-10 was a 6, but the whole experience was a 2. It was a $50 mistake! I would only recommend Dragon's Gate if they close down and the owner who was rude to me has something bad happen to her. Pros: Location Cons: Service more

Nice lunch spot 2/21/2006

Food was good, reasonably priced, large portion for lunch. Service was a bit slow. Nice ambience and not too crowded for lunch. more

Awful Service! 1/19/2006

They didn't have ANY Japanese food left. The waitress could have just told us that, but she let us order it all and came back 20 minutes later to tell us they ran out. So without giving us another menu, she asks us to order again. We order the beef, ""No beef."" Then we order the tempura and she tells us that it is not any good! We finally order something and mine comes in a bento box and my mother's on a plate. Why? We ordered the same thing! She didn't give us any rice which comes with it and says, ""Well, it is not lunch hours anymore"" after she told us it was! Of course it's not lunch anymore because she took 45 minutes to get us our food. She never apologized and had no idea what customer service is. Pros: Nicely decorated Cons: awful service, lack of food more

The Best in Austin 9/23/2005

I eat out a lot becuase of my job in sales and because it is hard to get my wife to cook (too busy with tennis and what not). We have been to Dragon Gate 3 times. 2 of the 3 times with another family. I have 3 kids, 7-12 yrs old, and our friends have two of similar ages. We all love this restaurant. My kids are wild about the Orange Chicken. I have consistantly found the food and service to be wonderful. Our waitress always went out of her way the ensure the kids had a great time. I have tried numerous Chinese restaurants in the austin area and I find Dragon Gate to be the best. The atmosphere is very classy and quiet (and could be romantic for a couple) but I always felt our kids were welcome. I encourage laudie007 to give it another shot. Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Great Experience more

Horrible Service 7/4/2004

I ate dinner here with my father and his entree was served 15 minutes before I got my sushi, which I saw ready on the sushi bar the whole time. Also, the waiters cannot speak English well enough to explain the menu or what you are trying to order. There were two waitors for all of the tables which I assume was about 30 tables. I will never go here again. Pros: atmosphere, concept Cons: , bad service more
