Don Farr Moving & Storage

The move started well with the crew showing up at 7:30am promptly, but one of our movers was obvious hung over (he even said he was out drinking really late the night before). The big issue aside from being extremely slow and costing us 2+ extra hours of move time was when they ignored our written request to have our white furniture shrink wrapped prior to the move. They even ignored two verbal directives to put the furniture down and shrink wrap it before trying to take it through the outside door. Much to our chagrin they said it wasn't a problem and proceeded to slam it through the door way. Thats when our brand new white couch was ruined with paint, rust, and dirt. After asking them to stop, they kept going and threw the couch into the truck rather than carrying it up the ramp and setting it down gently. The lack of concern for other people's property is heartbreaking. After seeing how upset we were with their conduct, several phone calls to their office, and a long conversation about how to handle the furniture and our belongings, we again had another incident. This time it occured after they had left when we were evaluating all of our furniture (we couldn't do this while they were there because then we'd be paying another 1-2 hours of labor for them to watch us inspect our furniture). Our dresser had a dozen inch-long grooves in the top, which it obviously was damaged during the move, but the kicker is that they actually took the time to take a black permanent marker and color in the scratches. I've moved myself 4 seperate times without any assistance from a moving company, and will be doing it again the next time I move. It was not worth the money to have them sit around and smoke cigarretes in the bed of the truck while watching the other guy carry one box in at a time either.Your money is best used on a u-haul and a couple of close friends - they will probably be more respectful of your belongings as well. Last Aug we were moving from Elizabeth Twp. (see picture in McKeesport Daily News) and the truck was fully loaded. The wheels were not blocked and the truck rolled down the hill, across a retaining wall and landed on our neighbors car. No one from the company spoke to us that day. They had to bring in another truck to unload and reload since the gas tanks had to be drained b/f the truck could be pulled off the wall and car which took hours and it was a 90 degree day. The crew was then sent back to our house to finish loading but by that time was so tired, they left much of our things at the house and left. We had to go to the closing so could not be there but left our daughter in charge. The movers were rude and used inappropriate language. We had to call the following day as they had still not contacted us and asked what they intended to do about it. Not only were our things damaged but the final bill was several hundred dollars higher than was quoted and we were told that unless we paid it, we could not file a claim. We were sent claim forms which we submitted but to date have not heard a word from them. Just about everything we own was either severely damaged or broken. The next day when the furniture was delivered, the same crew was on and careless wouldn't describe their actions. They had a poor attitude as if it was our fault. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. Just last week they filed for bankruptcy so I don't know if we will ever see compensation for the damage. We have called several times and still no response. It is Jan and the incident occurred in August. more

We used Don Farr (also known as Hindman) for a recent move out of our previous house, into Don Farr's storage, and then into our new home a month later, and overall the experience was very mixed. The move our from our previous home went very smoothly - the 4 movers laid down plastic on carpets/cardboard on hardwood, were very professional, curtious and pleasant to work with. The team that moved our goods from storage to our new home was poor however. They lacked professionalism, were unprepared, and lacked willingness to perform their duties to the expectations of this consumer. Two of my biggest complaints are 1) They arrived with no plastic/cardboard/ etc. to put down on carpet or hardwood (despite the fact it was wet and muddy out from a previous nights rain) and I had to ask MULTIPLE times for them to put something down and they finally put furniture pads down which had to be taken off the actual furniture they were moving for me - correction, I had to unwrapped them from the furniture myslef and put them down myself. They acted as if it were a huge suprise (and pain in the butt) that someone would actually want to keep their flooring in good condition and want them covered ?!?!?! Later, we found that our mattress was stained and damaged (despite being wrapped in mattress bags and plastic) with the plastic ripped. When I called the next morning, the person answering the phone was ironically the driver for our move, and was basically waiting for my call regarding this, admitted to the error stating they dropped and dragged the mattress in removing it from storage, and would send us a claim form for the damages. We submitted the claim from, for which they state they have 120 days to respond, which they took every minute of (even going over that time span causing me to call and inquire multiple times), and they provided reimbursement in the minimal amount which wasn't near the value of the mattress. I had the worst moving experience with this company! I moved almost once a year for recent 5 years, so I'm sure that I have enough moving experience. It took 5 hours to move last year with much more stuff, so we expected maximum 4 hours this time. But it ended up 7 hours!!!! These people made many dents on our washer, broke our buffet drawers (they didn't wrap the furniture so they dropped it on the ground!), ruined our sofa, dropped my printer from their truck, lost bed legs, completely broke my favorite halogen lamp into two pieces (by the way why did you take it away? We didn’t give it to you!!), and there are so much more. Also, they BROKE OUR NEW HOUSE!!!!!!! They peeled off the paints, made tons of scratches everywhere, and MADE A BIG HOLE ON THE WALL!!!!!!!!!!!! We had to call a contractor to fix these!!!! Moreover, when my husband tried to make claims over the phone, they redirected the call over and over again and finally the call was disconnected!!!!!!!!!! This is THE WORST MOVING COMPANY EVER!!! My husband and I just used Don Farr to move us approx. 300 miles from Pittsburgh. We experienced NO problems. The crew the packed up our stuff and the crew that unloaded were wonderful. They acted very professional during the whole move. I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys!! All of our items arrived in perfect condition. I would recommend Don Farr to anyone in the Pittsburgh area! They made what what I thought was going to be a very stressful day very relaxing! Pros: Great Move!! more

I needed a mover to come and take everything in my house, store it overnight and bring it to my new home the next day. I had two estimators come to my home. The first one told me I would need a semi or 2 box trucks to fit all of my belongings. When the estimator from Don Farr came, he assured me that everything would fit into one box truck and the other company was just trying to overcharge me. He seemed confident in his estimate so I agreed to use them for my move. I am not sure how that man sleeps at night!!! The movers arrived, an hour late - two smelled of alcohol - and the foreman tells me that everything can't fit in one truck and they will have to call their manager to send another truck. When I asked him if they would have anyone available, he told me that they ALWAYS have drivers and movers wait each day at their warehouse to go to the jobs when the foremen call for more help. (OBVIOUSLY, THEY LOW BALL AND LIE AT THE ESTIMATE TO GET YOUR BUSINESS KNOWING YOU WILL PAY MUCH MORE FOR FOR YOUR MOVE!) I had to be out of the house that day so I had no choice!! He called his manager and 45 minutes later another truck - and mover - arrived. We definately needed the second truck as it was full when they completed loading all my belongings. The quality of their "movers" left alot to be desired. They could have cared less about our belongings. When I complained to the foreman, he told me "You should have seen the crew I worked with yesterday - they were really bad." Amazing! Now, once everything was loaded, the forman came to me for payment. THEIR RATE WAS 20% HIGHER THAN THE FIRST ESTIMATE I RECEIVED!! After several messages to the company with no return phone calls and hearing other similar horror stories, it reinforces my initial feeling that this is the way they conduct their business. SHAME ON THEM! I then contacted the PABBB to file a complaint and was told they are no longer a member! I hope you learn from my mistake in using Don Farr for my move. If a company has to use multiple names to do business - RED FLAG. If the estimator gives you a much lower rate than their competitor and slams their competitor - RED FLAG! If the business has had their membership at the PABBB revoked due to no response to customer complaints - RED FLAG. Tell all your family and friends - as I have done - to stay away from this company. The provided quote may appear budget friendly, but that is where any customer service ends. The actual movers are inexperienced and unqualified, which in my case, resulted in unnecessary damages to the structure of my home as well as my belongings. ( Keep in mind that I am a veteran of myriad moves and I am well aware that scraped walls and scratched and dinged furniture are common, unavoidable side effects of moves; I am NOT referring to this type of problem). Contact with Don Farr Moving & Storage during the rapidly deteriorating situation on the day of my move, in addition to subsequent requests for dialogue have been met with outright rudeness and condescension, if not completely ignored. It has been 1 year since my transfer and no review of my submitted claim has been realized. Again, may I sincerely offer my humble opinion that this firm should not be doing business with the public or be allowed anywhere near customers who expect household belongings and home be respected. I recently moved and Don Farr movers severely damaged almost every piece of furniture they touched...filed claim through Don Far and five months later (ridiculously), they want to give me a mere $100 for damage to thousands of dollars worth of furniture. If you like your furniture..I suggest NOT using Don Farr!! Basically the movers don't give a damn and neither do the claims people.
