Saturday Moring Breakfast 5/9/2009

If the lines at Al's are out the door and you feel like hanging out for a bit (as opposed to eating as fast as possible because the guy standing behind you in eying your food and waiting for you to finish and get up) walk across the street and down a set of stairs and you get to the Dinkytowner. I couldn't give two sihts about local hip hop but the served-all-day breakfast here is fantastic. The 2 biggest problems with the place are that some of the servers are extremely inattentive (some are also very nice) and that if you're drunk and need a tex-mex on a Saturday night there's probably a lame show there with a five dollar cover, which you would have to pay in order to enter. Get the tex-mex, the farmers breakfast, the scrambler, a blueberry pancake to split with the table, and/or the eggs benedict or you will be sorry and jealous of your friends plate. Pros: Huge portions, cheap-ish, dark Cons: Service, lunch/dinner menu. more

One of My Favorites 4/11/2009

I've been going to the Dinkytowner for about two years now (I've lived in the Twin Cities area for a bit over two years) and there's a reason I keep coming back. It's in a great location, but you don't have to deal with the stereotypical college kids who show up to get wasted. The menu is cheap and almost every menu choice gives you more than enough food, even for my boyfriend who needs a lot of food to fill him up. There are also a lot of vegetarian and vegan options, which is extremely nice. This place has been the hangover breakfast/lunch choice for a while not only because of the amazing food, but also because the atmosphere on a weekend morning is quiet enough and dark enough to not aggravate a headache. We also love going there during the week for happy hour and on the weekends for going out. Everyone that I've take here has loved it. The pool tables also allow for some fun and socializing while drinking. As far as the service, it's pretty good. There are a couple of servers and bartenders who shine, mostly because they've been there for a while and they know exactly what they're doing. I have had a couple of bad servers, but it's not been enough to keep me away. I've also attended a number of the music events, though because a lot is hip-hop or dancy, I don't go often. When I have, though, the barstaff has always been on their game and are quick to serve you and quick to bring you your tab when you're done. Overall, I recommend this place to people who like chill atmosphere and laid-back staff. Pros: Great atmosphere, stiff drinks, cheap & tasty food Cons: Some waitstaff is under par more

Great Music, Terrible Service 12/27/2008

The Dinkytowner is a great place to hear local music, especially hip hop & rap. The food was fine but the wait staff/bar tenders are very rude. In particular 1 of the waitresses brought me the wrong food, took about 20 minutes to bring my ketchup & tried to overcharge me. When I called her on it she said that she was including her tip in it.. I said i was going to leave her tip on the table. Apparently she didn't like that bc she basically threw the change at me instead of handing it to me. Pros: Great place to support local artists Cons: Rude staff more

dinkytown's "non-college-kid" crowd! 1/2/2008

I love this place for the food, the music and the fun I always have when I go there. There are vegetarian options for food, all types of music from MC's to punk rock, and there usually aren't any annoying college kids getting obnoxiously drunk. I love the drink specials and the "underground" atmosphere. This place was rockin' out on new year's eve! Pros: cheap cover for all events Cons: walking far for parking in the winter! more

Best of Dinkytown 1/16/2003

Open early, closes late... I've spent many a morning over an Irish coffee chatting with Billy the bartender about motorcycles and his mania with Jim Morrison. No windows to let you know how long you've been there. Good, stiff, cheap drinks, good cheap food, good music... this place kicks ass. Great veggie food, pool and service. Be a regular. Pros: Rad atmosphere, Great service, Good booze Cons: No parking! more

a blur 8/7/2002

Great food, music, film, people and in Dinkytown! The cheese sticks were awesome and it was a great place to go after the Library closes. Pros: good cheese sticks, comfortable, open late Cons: not enough parking more

  • In Short
Follow the alt-rock, electronica, dance or wold beats piped out onto 14th Avenue and descend the stairs into the Dinkytowner's comfortable confines. There you'll find a wee stage and dance floor, some roomy booths and a back room packed with pool tables. In the evenings, films, DJs and live performances draw a respectable crowd of students and hipsters.
