most exquisite tasting Italian food in NYC 2/18/2011

I?ve been to Ristorante DeGrezia located on E 50th st many a times and the experience has always been amazing. DeGrezia is a warm and comfortable setting with an excellent menu. The food is flavorful, fulfilling and beautifully prepared. The complimentary variety of warm breads accompanied by a tasty olive oil dipping sauce and creamy, flavorful humus spread is simply delightful. Some of my favorite dishes are?The Capellini Con Aragosta?. ?Angel hair pasta prepared in a lobster sauce with fresh lobster and a touch cream and cognac- IT IS TO DIE FOR? And if you love fish your mouth will thank you with this ""Chilean sea bass"" prepared in a tomatoe-zucchini and yellow squash herb broth with couscous. ---OMG out of this world Also if you love cheese like I do. You must try the cheese plates. It?s a mixed plate of a variety of Italian Cheeses, such as Teleggio, Parmigiano, Gorgonzola, and Tuscan Pecorino --YUM!!! ....I cannot say enough about DeGrezia, every dish is perfect from the timing to the temperature to the array of flavors that came thru in every bite. If you love to eat and want the experience and some of the most exquisite tasting Italian food you will have in NYC, then you have found your place at DeGrezia ?(a little pricy but so worth every penny). DeGrezia is a Great unpretentious relaxed atmosphere where the Maitre D and waiters are very attentive and the food is second to none, whether on a ?first date? or a ?party celebration?, You won?t be disappointed?. you will leave wanting more. more

An Experience Worth Writing About 2/15/2011

I was told about this place by three different people and I was finally able to go with my husband and it will be ""our"" spot now. The experience starts right from when you walk in the door. Male waiters greet you and welcome you in. You feel as if you are in Tuscany somewhere. The decor is rich and welcoming. The feelings I got right away were warmth, romantic, and comfortable. The food was FABULOUS, the the flavor and aroma was incredible. Thanks DeGrezia for a great experience!!! more

What Has Happened? 12/15/2010

Having been a frequent patron for over 20 yrs at DeGrezia and having had both business meals and special event personal meals here at what was my favorite NYC restaurant, I was sorely disappointed last evening with the ENTIRE experience! Yes, the restaurant was busy, but there were a few open tables and I know some private parties in the back area of the restaurant, but the service was poor, the food was not up to par, the presentation was lacking and the back of my chair was hit 90% of the time when one particular waiter walked behind me. Not once was there an apology. At no time during the meal did anyone check to see if everything was OK which was very unlike all of my other experiences at DeGrezia. I ordered an angel hair pasta with lobster and the pasta appeared to be thrown into the bowl without any order. My dinner partner ordered the salmon and asked that the sauce be placed on the side rather than on top of the fish. When the salmon was placed on the table it was covered in the sauce. The Caesar salad was not up to par either. When the check came and the credit cards were put down, the waiter took them and was gone for quite awhile and when he returned he said that we had been given the wrong check and that he needed to void out the original charges and then run the cards through again. OK, that was fine but why didn't he just do it before he came out and tell us what happened and then take another 10 min to make the correction? As stated above, this was my favorite restaurant in the City and I have introduced many personal and business associates to DeGrezia over the years but it will be a while before I return. What used to be 5 stars in my books only rates a 2 1/2 - 3 stars based on last evening's experience! So disappointed! more

Amazing 10/18/2009

Enjoyed it the first time i went there about a year ago. Fell madly in love over the weekend on my 2nd visit. Quite possibly the best meal of my life. highly recommend the filet. cooked to perfection. spinach underneath to die for and foie gras on top could bring a tear to your eye. salad with pears and gorgonzola also special. tried number of friends dishes as well-- excellent rabbit, gnocchi with gorgonzola cream sauce was sinful and seafood risotto was very nice. the service was spectacular -- friendly and helpful with menu selection, further explanation of features, etc. a wonderful evening. Pros: atmosphere, outstanding food and service more

Hidden Tuscan Hideaway 3/28/2007

I am not sure where to begin, lets see the building looks like a Brownstone, then you go down the steps and are greeted and welcomed into this hidden Tuscan hideaway. The ambience, fresh flowers, and atmosphere was romantic, quaint, and welcoming, luckily we had made a reservation because almost all the tables were full. My family was seated and we had attentive service right away. The wine list was extensive and the menu offered an array of fish, pasta dishes, poultry and meats. We started with the cold antipasto which had all my sons favorites, mozzarella, fried calamari, shrimp, and clams. My husband is still talking about his black angus sirloin with porcini mushrooms and I had the red snapper fillet that was tantalizing to say the least. Our son who is eleven had the linguini alla vongole and kept licking his lips telling us it is the best he has ever had. We are delighted that we now have a spot to return too when we visit New York City. Pros: ambience, service, amazing Italian food more

Underwhelmed.... 11/5/2006

Service was adequate, at best (though there were only 4 tables occupied in the entire restaurant....Our party of two was the first seated, by about 20 minutes. Despite our reservation, could they have thought we were there for an Early Bird Special at 6:00PM and treated us accordingly???). Lots of staff standing around in small groups talking, not all that attentive to their assigned patrons. \r \r Food was good, but the ""sumptuous"" and ""generous"" portions were anything but (neither of us are what you would call big eaters). My sea bass was a really skimpy portion, not fileted tableside (as menued or mentioned in a previous review), but in a far end of the the restaurant (the maitre d' was putting on a de-boning clinic for two other waiters).\r \r Pretty expensive restaurant ($160+, not counting tip, for one appetizer, 2 entrees, 3 glasses of vin ordnaire, and two petite-sized desserts). Better-than-average tip did not improve the house attitude.\r \r Little gratitude or humanity demonstrated by the staff, particulalry the maitre d' who did not say ""thanks"" or even respond to our goodbye on our way out the door (one of the other waiters, not ours, did have the courtesy to say ""good night!"").\r \r In summary, I wouldn't return...despite the restaurant's reputation, there are too many better restaurants in NYC. Skip it!\r \r \r \r Pros: Romantic ambience, fresh flowers abound, cleanliness Cons: Small portions, service, lack of value more

The best branzion I have ever had....filed tableside. deGrezia is a real winner! 10/16/2006

I live upstairs from DeGrezia and had never been there after 10 years of living in Midtown. This restaurant is AWESOME! From the service (the best maitre d' in the city) to the incredible food, DeGrezia is a real winner. \r \r A great special occasion restaurant...or any other time!\r \r Very highly recommended! more

Great Italian Food!!! 7/19/2006

For someone that does not like to eat/go out, I must say that I finally found a restaurant that has a romantic, warm and inviting atmosphere-- with great food!! The maitre'd is always willing to help guide my family and I through the menu. The pasta dishes are delicious. Pasta alla vongole is a favorite. The polenta with sausage meat sauce is to die for. The pork chops w/balsamic, pan roasted apples and pears is out of this world. I discovered Degrezia a year ago and my wife loves me for it because it's the only place I'll ever take her. Great Food, Good Wine and Nice People!!! Si Mangia Bene!!! Pros: Ambience, Food, Service Cons: As any other place in Manhattan-Parking more

Really bad ! 6/6/2006

I was thinking I am gonna have a nice dinner in that place that a friend of mine recommended to me , but beside the expensive prices that it has was nothing more. I had a bussines dinner there but it's a shame. Nice place to say but service was bad and we had problems with the food.\r I wouldn't recommend to nobody. more

Best Italian food and service in NYC 4/5/2006

I have been dining there for years and it keeps getting better. All I could say is the food was always very good, but now it's better than ever. The waiter mentioned to us the menu was changed in jan. and everyone is flipping over it. So if your in the area, you have to stop in, if you love great italian food and good service. We can't wait to go back Enjoy.. Pros: great food, excellent service, charming more

Why am I not excited? 2/22/2005

This is a nice place; no doubt. Quiet, sophisticated, spacy, quiet but not very exciting. But who needs that? We had a run through of the menu choosing both from the specials and the classics and it was good, but not more. Nothing lifted us to higher grounds. Good wine list (and extensive) but weak on the white wines (for some reasons). Service was good but nothing special. The bill for three persons (incl tip) for a drink, a bottle of wine, starter and main course, dessert and coffee was $300. Not that bad. I advise you however to stay away from the buffalo mozzarella which is extremely over rated (and actually quite sub standard). But it's a nice (and very civilized) place. I just don't understand why I should come back. Pros: Calm & quiet, Civilized, Location Cons: So-so mozzarella, In basement more

""Try the veal, it's the best in the city 8/28/2003

This is one of the finest restaurants in the city, bar none. L.A.M.F. Pros: Fantastic Wine List, Unbelievable Food, First Class Service more

A gem of a place 3/25/2003

The experience we had at this restaurant was second to none. The ambiance, food and service were great but this is NOT cheap by any standards. My wife and I shared a meal, appetizer, and dessert with two glasses of the house wine and our meal came up to $85. more
