Editorial review from Citysearch 3/4/2013

Came here a month or so ago. Everyone was happy with their food (chicken BBQ, pork BBQ and 2 tofu BBQ). Service was attentive and bathrooms were acceptable. We are planning on coming back. The waitress was also helpful in steering away from food that could make me sick. They fixed grilled vegetables for me to ensure nothing was cross contaminated and I did not get sick after eating there. Portions were large enough to make 2 meals out of the plates for most of us at the table. more

Groose Briscuits 3/21/2012

I ordered the brisuits and it was so disgusting. It was blobs of fat cut into strips. when waiter asked how it was, I explained how all of it was nothing but fat and there was no meat in it. He smerked and said that's how its is supposed to be. My friend had the meatloaf and that was bad too, it was dry and rubbery.\r \r Awful food and very inconvient location. We are NEVER going back! more

Not as good as it used to be. 3/19/2012

Been to the Pit many times in the past, but it is losing it's luster - other and better choices out there. There have been a lot of changes in management lately, and the experience was different this time. Bathrooms were NASTY. Multiple errors with our food order. Wrong salad, wrong side orders, etc. When food did come out the servers were not attentive enough to know who ordered what and put it down in front of the wrong patron. Finally, my dessert (banana creme pie) was hot on one side and cold on the other. Hopefully the new management can get the Pit back up to its old standard. more

good stuff 9/26/2011

I've been here, it's a really cool spot with a full bar. The pulled pork barbeque is amazing, not overwhelmingly drenched in vinegar, and the mac n cheese is sensational! It's a bit pricey, but I can see why the spot is so popular, great atmosphere. more

Food Ok ! Services Not>>> 5/28/2011

I am sorry to say that I was very disappointed. The chopped pork was great as well as the brisket. But the sides were very plan, no flavor at all. We heard the place would be very busy and making reservations would be the smart thing to do, so we made them and arrived 20mins early and still had to wait because of a mix up....... services was not good at all, we waited and waited and people who arrived after us were eating before we even got our food. Nope I will not go again..... w more

best carolina cooking around 3/24/2011

potato salad was the best I have ever had and have lived around raleigh my whole life. cole slaw was very crunchy and fresh, biscuits were out of this world. don't dare go to smithfield's. this place is well worth the price. more

A Raleigh Classic 3/20/2011

The only complaint is that it's very crowded and busy. There is a good reason - it's some of the very best BBQ you can find anywhere. There is a unique combination here of product quality and cooking technique. Ed Mitchel is an icon. If you are in or near Raleigh, you need to put this on your list. more

What's so Special??? 2/4/2011

To sum up my experience...average food at above-average prices...My portions were not big at all...Their beer and liquor prices are outrageously hugh as well. Save your money and go to Smithfields for BBQ and fried chicken! As for the rest, I'd go to Bullocks or Dillards in Durham... more

Great bar for all music lovers 11/12/2010

I go to this bar every time I'm in the area. It reminds me a lot of Nashville and there's always great live music. Every time I've been there the bartenders have been really nice. My favorite thing (besides the live music) is the cheap beer. Regardless of what drink specials they have going on, beer is consistently cold and cheap. My boyfriend loves going there to play pool, so we both end up happy in the end which always makes for a better night. more

It's Aight..nothing to write home about 6/27/2010

So I visited The Pit again for the second (and most likely last) time and just as the first, I wasn't too impressed. The folks who are raving and ranting must not eat a lot a barbecue. Anyway, coming from a family of pit cooking barbecuers could very well be swaying my opinion on this place. The southern side of my family is from one of those small, everyone knows everyone, pig picking every other day type of towns. It was literally just put on the map about a decade ago and has ONE stop light. So when it comes to true barbecue, I've practically been raised on the stuff, so any barbecue joint needs to really come strong with it, and the Pit just didn't. It's ok...if you don't know any better. Pros: friendly waitstaff Cons: It's more hype than anything more

Great Food 6/20/2010

I had dinner at ""The Pit"" on a very busy night - the Saturday before Mother's Day. It was a full house, yet the service was excellent. I ordered barbecued chicken, collard greens, sweet potato fries and a Diet Pepsi. (Yes, I had to cut calories somewhere). LOL!! The server was quite attentive and the portions were big, so I asked for a takeout box. I had enough food for lunch the next day! Without hesitation, I highly recommend ""The Pit"". Pros: Great Menu / Great Staff Cons: N/A more

I do love BBQ 5/29/2010

I actually think it's better leftover the next day, very good food (and try the banana pudding). more

great food! 5/11/2010

When I first walked into this place I was pleasantly surprised by the relaxing atmosphere. The food was unbelievable and a very reasonable price. I ordered ribs that were cooked to perfection, the meat simply falls of the bone, and macaroni and cheese that tasted better than any I have had! Bottom line... this place cant be beat. more

Authentic whole-hog, pit-cooked barbecue

Owner Message
  • Legendary Pitmaster Ed Mitchell proudly serves authentic whole-hog, pit-cooked barbecue at The Pit in downtown Raleigh's Warehouse District. Ed's passion for barbecue goes back to his childhood in Wilson, N.C., when a pig was cooked at a time of celebration. He brings that spirit and a 150-year-old family recipe to The Pit, which has made a name as the destination for the state's signature cuisine and its great culinary offerings. Pigs used to produce the barbecue are raised locally using free-range farming practices, and the freshest of the state's produce is featured in the starters, sides and desserts. Going beyond the traditional barbecue offerings with contemporary twists on Southern favorites, The Pit also serves brisket, ribs, smoked turkey, fried chicken and barbecue tofu. This Southern hospitality tradition mixes well with its setting in a restored 1930s meatpacking warehouse.
