Oh no 1/7/2012

The salon is very clean. But the employees are not experienced. I got my hair colored and it came out horrible. I even had my hairdresser from back home call and give her the exact color numbers and formulas ( I didn't have time to go home before a wedding) My roots were showing, they were so dark. And I asked her if she could fix it. And she told me ""dark roots is in right now"" :0 I was shocked. I will not go back. more

Awful 9/12/2011

I used to go to Deans Shadyside from 2008. First year I was extremely satisfied. The level of service was high, they do everything to satisfied a customer. But, on my second year, when I went there on the regular base every other month, they made me wait for 4 - 5 hours!!!! To make highlights and cut, I spent 5 hours!!!! It's unacceptable. I'm looking for another salon. more

Did Dean raise rates/cut the prebooking discount? 5/14/2011

I'd been going to Dean of Shadyside since 2009 since a coworker gave me a coupon for a free haircut. I've generally had good experiences and my hair has looked great. At a previous appointment, I'd forgotten to bring the card that they give you when you prebook, and my price went up about $10. I figured this was because I forgot the card. As of last February or so, my stylist stopped working at the salon, I wasn't sure where she went, and Dean offed me a free cut, so I went back for that, and all was ok. But this last time, I brought the prebook card, and my price was more than when I didn't bring it. Did they stop the prebook discount? Their website lists different prices for different ""levels"" with no explanation of what this means. Would they have bumped up my ""level"" without telling me? I know we're in crappy economic times, but some explanation would have been nice. The price alone might not bother me too much, but my stylist this last time was a bit rude, barely said anything even though I tried to be friendly, and didn't ask what I thought after all was said and done (yeah, I know I could speak up, but you get the point). So, I might go somewhere else next time. more

As a Former Employee.. Please stay away from this salon 2/21/2011

As a former employee of Dean of Shadyside Salon, I am here to give you some advice. Stay away. I have never been treated so badly in my LIFE. I started working there in 2008, and worked there for a year before quitting. I hated it so much that I actually gave up my cosmetology career to go to school as a vet tech, something much more meaningful. I moved to Pittsburgh when I was 18 with barely anything in my name, and when I came in for an interview I dressed the best I could with a pair of black jeans you could barely tell were jeans. I showed up 15 minutes early and waited almost an hour, only to have the owner Dean come out and tell me he'd give me another chance (like he's God or something) if I came back dressed better. So unfortunately I made the decision to come back. They had me work at least 20 unpaid hours in a week as a slave without pay, and called it a ""working interview"". When I was hired, I started to learn how evil that place really was. The sylists are so catty, I never did a thing to them, I kept my mouth shut and did my job, but I would walk past the break room on several occassions to hear them talking about me. Dean acts like a devout Christian, but he is one of the most evil people I've ever met. On one occasion while I was working as a receptionist, he pushed me out of the way and threw all the papers and post cards he had me working on on the floor and yelled at me in front of clients. Richard is another story, he is absolutely vulgar and I have never heard such disgusting things come out of a man's mouth before. I once heard him say he wished male ejaculate tasted like blueberry yogurt. He also told me that I wasn't pretty. Which is abolutely ridiculous, not to be concieted or anything. I also got in trouble for talking to a client about my boyfriend, who is now my husband, I was told it was innapropriate even though Richard screams about how he's gay every day. The girls that work there stab eachother in the back constantly, and talk about all the clients in the breakroom, trust me on that one, so if you are a client, I can promise you you've been talked about, and not in a good way. I was underpaid for working overtime, and assistants are supposed to get commision for the products they help sell with the stylists. I sold quite a bit with Richard while his assistant was away, and I heard him in the office say he'd rather give the commisions to Christina (the other assistant). So.. no extra money on my paycheck. I cried almost every day after work, and I had never been like that before working there. I always stood up for myself, but that place breaks you so much I turned into a completely different person. There is so much more I have to say after a year of that miserable hell, but I think I've said enough. So all I can say is, you are too good to waste your time at that salon. You deserve better, and I hope you make a good decision. more

ALWAYS A GREAT EXPERIENCE 2/1/2011

I highly recommend Dean of Shadyside. I always look forward to coming to my appointments with Lauren. I am always promptly greeting by reception and offered something to drink. Lauren does a great job by asking me how I would like my hair to look and explains what and why she is doing something- such as what products are used to color my hair etc. I have always had a wonderful experience at the salon and will continue to go for years to come. more

A client for: 4 years & running 1/29/2011

You had me at hello 4 years ago the first time I walked out the door with a new look & a new attitude.\r \r . My stylist is Richard & I was referred to him 4 years ago by a co-worker when she overheard me complaining about how uneven my hair always grew in after a cut from my previous stylist. She told me “it would be my loss” if I did not take time to make an appointment with this “wonderful stylist named Richard ” at Dean of Shadyside.\r \r My first thought was “ right - everyone thinks their stylist is the best:. What the heck – what did I have to lose trying ?\r My first meeting with Richard started with a “consultation” in which he asked me several questions which I thought odd at first as I didn’t understand what the questions had to do with a hair cut. After an energetic greeting, he asked me to describe my morning routine, followed by a few other questions I thought odd like “ How would you describe your style “ & “What is your profession”, & “What sports do you play “ ? I recall thinking to myself – “where is this going”? \r \r After my first cut with Richard, I realized where it was going. In an effort to learn more about me, my profession, my routine, my active lifestyle, & my personality, he was able to produce a haircut conducive to my needs. He created a versatile style that required minimal styling time, ( always on the go ) can be styled conservatively for my day job ( VP in banking industry ) , yet converted to a fresh, frisky look (with the help of some styling agents\r \r All of this was a result of Richard’s initial consultation, which at the time I did not understand, but now appreciate more than ever after seeing the results.\r I often chuckle to myself when I observe a new client at the salon going through their “initial consultation” & reflect back on mine. Be patient, there is a method to his madness & the outcome will most likely be more than pleasing.I have witnessed countless clients ecstatic over their new color or style at the salon & it is good to see how good they feel about themselves.\r I have overheard the stylists conversing about training classes they have attended in cities which include Paris, Miami, & New York on cutting styles & techniques or specialized color application. Educated stylists, trendy personalities & the attentive staff is what keeps Dean of Shadyside a notch above the rest.\r \r Of course, I have witnessed the rare occasion when a customer was initially dismayed with the outcome of their creation, but I suppose this is to be expected in any business, especially one of such a personal nature. The staff & Management step it up & go out of their way to correct the situation in an effort to satisfy the customer. Dean’s staff is always about the customer that’s a fact.\r \r Overall, I have learned the diverse styles & personalities of the staff at Dean’s offers a broader clientele base the opportunity to experience a first class salon & one has to remember that stylists are artists, they tend to be trendy & on the edge, & this contributes to the success of the salon as well… ( Dean of Shadyside reminded me of this ) \r \r This salon has talented stylists to suit any style or personality. The staff is well trained, attentive, diverse & friendly. Dean of Shadyside has it all.My suggestion is you try it for yourself & make your own decision. My guess is you’ll be happy you made the appointment. \r \r Did I mention my wife has enjoyed the salon for 3 years now with consistently positive results?\r more

A moment of truth. 1/20/2011

I have never written a review in my entire life. However, when I had the misfortune of reading the most blasphemous review of a stylist that not only has the greatest styling expertise that I have ever seen, but a passion and love of life that inspires me. Richard Sciulli is one of the most passsionate, honest, perfecting and real human beings I have ever met. After reading a review by someone that must not be comfortable with themselves in order to attempt to berate someone at the top of their game is only a reflection of themselves. Richard has lived all over the world studying his craft and mastering it. He treats every stylist and client with such compassion and truly cares about them. That is something that you do not see in any industry. The first time I had the privilege to work with Richard, he created an elegant masterpiece of my mohawk to compliment my Alexander Mcqueen wedding gown for the day of my wedding. I could not even have fathomed what he was able to create. He truly is an artist and that is why he is so passionate and self critical, almost to a fault. But that is what TRUE artists do. He is a great man that inspires almost all that come in contact with him. Some people may be intimidated by his passion and confidence, but the brave ones are capable of achieving true beauty through Richard. It's a shame that when people are at the top and are so talented, there are others that don't possess that same greatness and try to put others down. Let people be who they are. When you judge someone else, you make it ok for others to judge you. None of us are perfect. The things that make us all beautiful, unique and special are the differences between us. So try not to hate, instead embrace our differences. I have beeen blessed and inspired by Richard Sciulli to be a part of my life. I hope one day you may too.\r \r Mrs. Marjorie McKinney more

I love this salon! 1/18/2011

This salon is fantastic and I reccommend it to everyone.\r It is centrally located with great parking and acess to busses. The salon itself is very clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The receptionists are friendly and very accomodating if you need to reshcdule and my personal stylist is Lauren who does an amazing job interpreting what I want done and also helping me to style it myself and maitain my look. The products they offer are the best quality and there are many incentives for pre-booking and refering friends. I even bring men I'm dating here before meeting my parents so they look even more handsome! more

Impressed on my first visit 1/12/2011

I have heard so much about this salon from my coworkers & admired their styles for some time, but was reluctant to try another stylist having gotten used to my regular stylist of 2 years. With the start of a New Year, I decided to take their advise & today was my first visit to Dean of Shadyside. I had heard & read so much about a stylist by the name of Richard that he is the one I chose in search of the new look I was hoping for. \r \r From the time I entered the salon until the time I left, I was approached by various staff introducing themselves to me, welcoming me to the salon, & asking me if they could get me anything to drink or read. At one point, I was even offered a Starbucks drink as one of the staff was heading over. \r \r As I entered Richard's chair, I received a warm welcome from him as he went into a brief consultation which ended with him questioning my expectations. After explaining my ideas of a style, he gave me feedback on his thoughts on the style I described & the effects it may have on my facial structure & the amount of time I am willing to spend each day styling my hair. \r \r We ended up meeting in the middle on the style & then I listened as he described how highlights would add richness to the style we had in mind. As I had heard of Richard, he worked his magic & as he spun me toward the mirror for my view of the results, I was a bit nervous, but when I saw the same image reflected in the mirror as I had pictured in my mind - I wondered why I had waited so long to try out this stylist I had heard so much about. \r \r I can't wait to go to work tomorrow to show off my new look. The cut is to perfection & the color with my new highlights brought the look I thought I could never have to me for the New Year. I booked my next appointment before I left the salon. \r \r Richard, thank you for sharing your talents & for your honesty from the start - together we came up with a look I never thought I could have. See you soon. more

Hard to please 1/11/2011

I am notoriously difficult to please. I don't like being that way but what can you do? I have been going to a salon in the suburbs (this salon shall remain nameless) for years. They did a good job. A friend of mine suggested that I try dean of Shadyside so I did. I didn't realize what I was missing. I was really pleased with the service and my color/cut was amazing. I will recommend this salon to anyone that asks. The prices are very reasonable and the service is top notch. more

Great Salon Great Service 1/11/2011

I have been to countless salons over the years and I can say without a doubt that Dean of Shadyside is one of the best. Every aspect of my first visit to the salon was positive. When I saw the results of my cut I became overwhelmed with emotion because I have not seen myself look that good in a long time. I could finally breath a sigh of relief because my seemingly endless quest for a great salon and a great stylist had finally come to an end. I have found the one. My stylists name was Richard. He is also the manager of the salon. I lived in NYC for many years and Richard quite frankly made some of the stylists in NYC look like beauty school dropouts. I received a thorough consultation, an amazing cut and styling. I will not consider going to another salon in Pittsburgh after my experience at Dean of Shadyside. Everyone was great - friendly, sociable, professional, and sincere. I have already scheduled my next appointment and I can't wait to go back. Thanks Richard!!! more

Strange and disappointing 12/13/2010

I was the matron of honor in the wedding of a very good friend. Treating her to a mani/pedi seemed like a great way to relax and indulge a little bit before the wedding. My friend tends to be a little bit on the shy and reserved side. She doesn't know how to ""take"" certain people. There were some REALLY obnoxious people working at this salon! The manager is one of those people who talks loudly to make sure everyone within a ten mile radius can hear what he is saying. He says some vulgar, ridiculously inappropriate things. When we were there he was walking funny and saying his butt hurt from the wild time he had the night before. SERIOUSLY? My friend also had a really rude nail tech. She is a Russian woman, so maybe her English is limited. But she did not say ONE word to my friend the entire time. My girl was very young and extremely slow, but she was friendly and professional. Both of our pedicures and manicures looked very nice for the wedding. But relaxing, pampering yourselves, having girl time is such an important part of the experience when goin to a salon or spa. I chose Dean because I thought it would be an upscale, high caliber salon. My friend was stressed as it was, three days before her wedding. Also, the area where they do pedicures is a little dark, depressing corner of the salon. It almost feels like an afterthought. Most of the better salons have seperate rooms for spa services, where it is quiet and relaxed. We weren't even offered reading material. The girl at the front asked me if I would like coffee. I said yes. She never brought it to me. I think she forgot. The girls in reception seemed distracted and irritable. I wanted this to be a fun and relaxing experience for my friend. It was a disappointment. more

Are you High??? 11/19/2010

I came in the other day to get my hair cut my a girl named Lisa. She was recommended by the receptionist. At first she seemed very nice. HOWEVER...while she was cutting my hair I swear she was falling alseep. It was like she was in so high and drugged up she had no idea what was going on. I ended up having to go to another salon the following day to have my hair fixed. It was uneven and not anything like what i asked for. I have no plans to return to Dean Of Shadyside after that. Plus the atmosphere of the salon wasnt anything good. I felt that it was very unprofessional. If i am going to pay for a high price salon visit i expect at lot more then what i got. more

High End... NOT! Vulgar... YES! 11/2/2010

Look, I have fairly easy hair to deal with... I am not a picky person... I am not judgmental and am open to many different types of people- as it is a part of my business. But let me just ask... WHO THE HELL DOES THIS RICHARD THINK HE IS?! He wasn't even my stylist, but he managed to make my experience at this ""so-called"" high end salon a VERY uncomfortable and embarrassing experience. I couldn't help but over hear his ridiculously loud conversation with his fellow worker. They talked about male genitalia in grave, frank detail! Not only talked about it, but what they like to do with it! And how ""big"" someone they both knew was. Are you serious? When I gave him a look of disapproval he had the audacity to try and stare me down with this bizarre, crazy look. So I stared right back through the mirror. Then he goes on to say to his fellow worker with the tone a 5 year old would have that the owner, Dean, is a very devout Christian and ""even he isn't as uptight as SOME people"" and then looks to me. UNACCEPTABLE! My hair was done- mediocre at best- which I can live with- the girl doing my hair was obviously embarrassed as she stuttered and sputtered through my service- blushing from time to time. I asked the girl who he was and she says, ""He is Richard, our manager."" Manager? MANAGER?!?!?! A vulgar, vile, filth mouthed man dancing around, shouting about gay sex?! I work with many GLBT people and I have NEVER heard such things come out of their mouths in a public setting as this. Mr. Christian Dean best take a look at his management and do some house cleaning. I have read through the previous comments here and found that this is not the first time there has been a problem with this ""manager."" I think it is a shame that the owner obviously doesn't care about the environment his hair cutters and staff work in. This salon has lost clients and it seems staff because of this buffoon. If I worked there, this man wouldn't because I would get him on sexual harassment charges! more

Unreal..... 10/28/2010

So it had been a few months since I was at Dean's. I decided to go back this week for a cut. I could not believe how much this place has gone downhill. WOW! First off, when I came in the girls at the front desk didn’t even look up to greet me. I stood there for a few minutes before they asked me whom I was there to see. Then they directed me to get a robe on but didn’t bother to explain to me where they where. They also did not offer me anything to drink which every other time I was asked.\r So almost instantly, my stylist came and got me. She was so nice and offered me coffee or water. We went to her chair and talked about what I wanted to do today. As we were sitting there, I look over and could not believe my eyes. There was this very large girl wearing next to nothing!! It was very offensive to me. I started to notice that there was a lot of employees at the salon that just did not seem professional. This one guy was dancing and yelling at another stylist across the room. Another girl has half her head shaved and was also dressed half naked (and she shouldn’t be either). I just thought this was more of an upscale salon. When I used to come in, the employees where more professional and it was a nice atmosphere. This time I felt like I was at the circus. \r If it were not for Stephanie, my stylist I would NEVER come in there. She is very professional, dresses accordingly, and does the kind of job you expect from a high-class salon. If she were not there I would not step foot in there for anything. What a mess Dean of Shadyside has turned into! \r more

more worried about whos next to her 10/26/2010

After a few visits this place is just not for me....prob not for you either! My stylist if you can call her that is rude....im not 12 an i do have an idea what i want with my hair that im paying you to do. If only you could stop looking and making faces with the man next to you then you might hear what im saying.....I came to this place thinking it was ""high end"" but leaving thinking i would have been better at supercuts... at least going there you go in knowing the stylist has no idea what shes doing... instead i get someone who is too busy watching everyone else instead of talking to me in her chair....the loud man next to her is so into him self its crazy....im not sure what Dean is thinking? I wonder if he sees what goes on in that place? most of his staff is quit..working with their clients....not very many of them are smiling though, but why would they? after all they have to give things away to get people to come! \r FYI Lauren if you want to keep clients focus on them an not whats next to you! more

so angry, so so so angry 10/13/2010

I got a haircut, color for my roots and manicure here from the stylist Lisa. The manicure has bubbles in it, the color matched perfectly, and the haircut is in the top 5 worst haircuts I've ever received. I have long hair and I specifically requested she not add any layers to the back. She added what I would generously call a single layer in a choppy, garden shear-like way to the back of my hair about 4 inches from the longest part of my hair. Is it supposed to be blended? The world will never know...but since I specifically requested they not be added in the first place, even if it didn't look like a single, unblended, uneven layer, I'd still be upset. I seriously cannot figure out what she was thinking. She then cut what I think are supposed to be parted in the center, face framing layers , but both sides are completely different and the layers don't blend and they aren't really layers, it's sort of like the back, one giant chunk of a layer and then the rest of the full length hair. It's an astonishingly bad haircut that is going to cause me to have to get about 4 inches chopped off my hair, which is bad enough but since she took off 3 already, that means I'm basically going to have to completely change the style I've been working on for the last 3 years. I have the urge to throw my hair dryer at the wall every time I try and style this massacre. I'm counting down the days until my appointment at another salon to fix this. I like to think I'm an easygoing person but seriously, this hair cut is terrible. TERRIBLE. On the upside, when I called to complain to the owner, he was very responsive and offered to re-do it. I don't live in Pittsburgh but if I did, I don't think I'd set foot in that salon ever again despite his offer. Also on the dubious upside they are incredibly cheap. Although I would gladly pay more for a better haircut and usually do. I guess you get what you pay for? At least I'm not out $150 and 7 inches of hair..only $80 and 7 inches of hair :/ Good luck if you're going here, you couldn't pay me enough to set foot in here ever again. more
