Nothing special...! 1/27/2011

There is nothing special abt this restaurant. They are not respectful to customers. There are too many better restaurants around to choose from. We were told that they do not take credit/debit cards?? what kind of place is that ?? And they lied about some other stuff that City of NY/consumers dept. should get involved in?? Only one way to deal with them.... more

Spare yourself the horror of Copper Chimney 10/23/2010

This was by far our most horrendous restaurant experience. EVER!! It all started with the service being extremely poor. The waiter was completely aloof, we had to call him repeatedly to get some service. Stuff was being thrown on our table and it damn near knocked my glass of water over several times! When asked why the Rasam tasted so bad we were told its supposed to taste like plain red chilli in water!! We were then informed that the kitchen was closing and we better hurry it up; it was 9:30pm then! All this prompted us to dispute the flat 20% gratuity included in the check. The manager started arguing that it was compulsary and threatened to call the cops on us in case we didn't pay the entire 20%!! I wonder if we are legally obliged to pay 20% then why is it added as an after-tax amount!! It gets worse, the owner then started blaming my friend for not moving when the food was being served and screamed that we were too busy talking than observing the service!!! I really don't know what kind of an idiot the owner is. But all this was enough for us to throw a fit and leave the place in heated argument. This place is two-thumbs way down. 28th and Lex has far better Indian restaurants. Please spare yourself the horror that is Copper Chimney. more

THE BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT 1/23/2010

I went to Copper Chimney with a group of six people.i think the food was fantastic ,mind blowing,I have eaten at many indian restaurants and Copper Chimney's food stand out.It is perfect. We ordered honey gobi garlic, dahi puri, shrimps, crab cake and chicken 65 as appetizers and all were a hit,The main course chicken chettinad and lamb of two kinds and daal and the very yummy methi malai mutter were superb,Liquid copper was a very yummy cocktail ,Overall the food was fantastic,The service was very attentive ,We also got the beat rasmalai and gulab jamun as complimentary dessert.I would def go again and again.I was also informed that the restaurant has a weekly buffet fot 8.95 all you can eat and had items that were not on the menu,Can't wait to try.A great find in Little india Pros: FOOD , FOOD AND FOOD Cons: NONE more

Bad Food - Not Going there Again 9/11/2009

I went to Copper Chimney last night for the first time as one of my friends had recommended it (though I remember his wife told me not to try it!!- should have taken her advice instead). While the service was polite and I did not have to wait at all, I found the food to be quite bland to be honest. The aloo paranthas were nothing great but the veg biryani was the WORST that I have ever had. It looked like that had used some left over biryani and to make it up they mixed some rice in there- totally below my expectations..When I asked them to fix it, the person initially told me that this is how a veg biryani is supposed to be!! They agreed to do something about it when I persisted. The "new" biryani showed up 5 minutes after I was finished and did not taste too different. I am not here to trash the place but I want to share my honest advice that you should not go there if you want to have good Indian food. For the price they charge, you are better off going to another nice restaurant (say a Yuva or Chola or a few other arnd 28th street) Seriously, this was very disappointing and not value for money at all. The decor was also just about OK. Wonder why some people have given it a better rating. This is the first time I have ever written a bad review for a restaurant- you can imagine how unimpressed I am with the place!! Before you take a decision, you must still read other reviews to make up your mind. May be it was a one off thing that does not happen to you but I am not going there again, for sure. Cheers! Pros: Can't think of any Cons: Food more

Great Food but pathetic service...................... 3/8/2009

Copper Chimney food stands out to most Indian restaurants i have eaten at especially in the neighborhood it is situated. Intially, my experience was good but once i was seated in an aromatic atmosphere, I felt as if i high end indian restaurant. But unfortunately, my hopes were dashed by the service. I was ready to order the food but as i put my head up to search for a waiter, there was nobody in sight. I thought they were busy so i decieded to wait till someone was is in sight. After 25 minutes, i again put my head up and saw two waitresses, probably one was a hostess who sat us down at the door gigling and chatting up to glory, instead of having a watchful eye on the tables. Then i wave my hand to guy at the back and he respnds to me. The girls were probably just 10 ft away and still didnt notice us. This is "ATROCIOUS SERVICE". For a second i was intending to go talk to the manager but then was mesmerized by their excellent food. My recommendations would be: Gobi honey garlic, lamb saag, goan fish curry and the liquid copper.......... Go to copper chimney for their food but not for their service. hope thos two waitresses will learn what it takes to be in the service industry and not hink of it as a fashion and chatting industry............ Pros: Food, Food, Food, Drinks and their atmosphere......... Cons: The two waitressess and their service.... more

good food, poor service and terrible delivery 10/17/2008

the food here is very good, one of the better indian places in the city that are resonable priced. we very much like the lamb chops. the reason it's a one is that its service isn't great and the delivery is terrible. it takes well over one hour. more

Always good and cordial 10/4/2008

Was brought there by a colleague and brought myself quite a number of people ever since- always great. And I am not even a fan of Indian food, yet the atmosphere, friendly service, carefully selected menu, always makes me feel to come there again. Garlic nan is great, cauliflower starter( a full name escapes me)-I would eat that everyday and rice pudding is unforgettable. Best place to bring business associates for lunch, and a date too. Beautiful and simple interior design, moderately quiet for an American restaurant. For a cranky "restaurant manager" that left bad review- the toilet area is really discreet there, unless you stare that direction all the time. Another plus- BYOB, and a liquor store is just around a corner. Expect to pay "corkage" fee though And if there is plenty of well dressed Indian customers in large groups- you know it has to be that good. Pros: Best Indian, great value, pleasant ambience Cons: Been there at least 10 times, -none yet. more

Best Chettinad and Mango Lassi's 9/21/2008

Copper Chimney was one of the best India resteraunts in NYC. The Experience was great rather amazing... My girlfriend enjoyed the mango lassi so much that she order one to go... we ordered the tava crab which was sincillating. The Chicken Chettinad was the best part of the dinner and belive me when i say that i havent had anything like that in ages... Overall our experience was amazing... Hats off to the staff for an amazing and couteous service... Pros: Ambience, Chicken Chettinad, Staff and The Mango Lassi Cons: Not Really.............. more

Hopeless, Avoid at all costs. 9/4/2008

This has got to be one of the worst places I have ever been to. As a Restaurant manager myself, I tend to get overly critical but this place was just the pits. We were seated upstairs in clear view of people entering the restroom, the seats were uncomfortable and they packed us in like sardines and charged us a pretty packet for it. Our food was just OK. Service was fast, and it was a good thing because we wanted out of there asap. It was noisy, smelly and the whole experience just sullied our night out will not go back. more

Tikka Masala was good 8/8/2008

Delivery was fast. Compared the Chicken Tikka Masala to that from Curry leaf, and much preferred this one. It could use a little more spice though. I would not recommend the crab cake, it was overpriced and not anything special. Pros: Chicken Tikka Masala was good more

HORRIBLE 7/30/2008

sub par food; horrible service. It took an hour to get our food. We asked for dessert to go and were charged, but got home and saw that they forgot to give it to us. Never again more

Worst place 5/12/2008

i have no doubt n saying this is the worst place i ever tried for food.very unprofessional people.managers are rude.. very rude.food is very suboptimal, place looks unhygenic(saw roches),saw waiters picking there nose.gross. would never go there again.if u guys have concern about hygeine, care about ur money, want to have decent meal--then this is not the place for u.if there was a star less than one i would choose that more

Nice when its quiet 2/2/2008

I was wary of coming here after reading the bad reviews. I went on a quiet Wednesday, so that may explain why I didn't have any problems at the lounge. I had the chai rum which was decent, it could have been more Chai-ey...my friend had the Mango drink which she LOVED....the bartender accidently brought her the wrong drink , but promptly brought her the correct one....so really nothing to complain about..... more

Elegant and stylish but lacks refined service 11/19/2007

There are not many elegant Curry Hill restaurants that offer the stylish atmosphere of Copper Chimney but that's where its superiority ends. The cocktails were disappointing and the food average. at a birthday dinner, guests had to send back their $10 cocktails and several dishes - the Andra Crab Masala, Hari Bahri Dahl and lamb vindaloo- were overspiced But the service resulted in the most resounding disappointment. Our waiter was sweet , but slow, taking too long to take our order and leaving the plates on the table too long afterward. Then at 11 am, before the bill was signed, the restaurant began turning off the lights..unacceptable considering the 11 guests who we brought to dinner. Copper Chimney wants to charge its big-league prices but does not know how to provide service that stands up to most any NYC restaurant. more

Good restaurant, okay prices, nice atmosphere 11/11/2007

Went with 3 other girls on a Sunday night when we were just on a mission to have Indian but didn't know exactly where to go. This was my first time having Indian food however my friends eat it pretty often and knew what to order. The restaurant was pretty crowded but we only waited for about 5 minutes to get a table. We had the chicken tiki masala, saag paneer, and some kind of fish dish all to split after appetizers of Bombay Bahjai and a few others. Apps were all very good as was the chicken tiki masala and saag panner. The fish was okay, not great. I liked this restaurant and the food, I thought was very good. Of course being my first time with Indian food isn't much help since I don't have anything to compare it to. However, all of my friends who eat Indian quite often said it was really good and they enjoyed it a lot. I'll definately take my BF back since he's an Indian-food virgin as well! I'm sure there is cheaper food in this area at a not-so-pretty-inside place, but I'll just stick with what I know. Pros: Nice interior and atmosphere, helpful staff, good food Cons: serving sizes not so great, kinda skimpy on the servings. Agreed that rice should come with your entree at no add'tl charge. more

Must be changing... 6/29/2007

I ate at Copper Chimney recently with some friends. They provided us with a drink menu once we sat and we all wanted cocktails. We were told they did not have hard liquor. It would have been nice to know that once they gave out the drink menus. So we ordered wine. Then the food menu came. Our food was good, but I agree with the reviews that, for the price, a little more, maybe free rice or something, would be better. No one came around to see if everything was right - they had forgotten one of our dishes, so we had to call over a server. Then the bill came. The food was listed correctly, but there was no mention of our drinks, except for some other drink items that we did not order. Again, it would have been nice to have this explained... I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but something must be going on there right now. So, just be aware that if you want a decent Indian meal and don't care about cocktails, or service, then this place is right for you. Cons: Service, value for price, no explanations more

APPALLING SERVICE - rushed into finishing the meal! 12/31/2006

I have a gripe with the APPALLING SERVICE at this restaurant. While visiting during an understandably busy New Year's Eve afternoon, the group of four was hassled and hurried into finishing the meal quickly - most likely to make room for another group that needed the bigger table because they had more people show up! My fiancee had barely had her credit card out of her purse before it was snatched. This was followed by the server picking up the charge receipt almost soon after it was brought back to the table - another attempt to get the group out. And most surprising: This ABOMINABLE behavior was exhibited by the person who I assume is the proprietor of the place! Unfortunately the Indian food, definitely not stellar in taste, but not bad either, left a very bitter taste in the mouth. Cons: If there are people waiting to be seated, be prepared to be rushed into finishing so the restaurant can make some more money! Also, the portion sizes were well below the average for Indian cuisine more

love this place 12/12/2006

This is my first time posting on city search, but I had to write a review for one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. Especially after seeing some of the poor reviews for this gem. My fiance and I live in the city, so we eat out and order in a lot?. I work in the fashion industry and he on Wall Street, and we moved here from London 7 years ago, so we do a lot of traveling?which means a lot of eating! We have been going to Copper Chimney for months now and we never have had any complaints. The atmosphere is very hip and loungy and not at all what you expect from "Curry Hill" dining. We live in the vicinity, so to have a place we love so much in the area is a switch. The service is very attentive and actually pretty fast if that?s important to you. The house cocktails are fun and they have a decent selection of Indian beers. We can?t get enough of the Tandori Samosa's and the Aloo Gobi which is perfectly cumin scented. I have to say, I once went to the lunch buffet and I didn?t really like it. The food on the buffet was a bit bland and the variety weird? But for dinner, when you can order your own dishes?I have yet to try ANYTHING I didn?t like? Pros: Food is great!!!! Cons: lunch buffet more
