Just happened on it, but a great find 12/15/2005

I'm going to throw in my two cents, even if it's a carbon copy - GREAT drinks (the mojito was pathetic, though) The food is excellent - my wife had the mole' and was in heaven-the filet was delicious. The "papas au gratin" - scalloped potatoes - was the best dish, even though it's a side. Just delicious. Great place, lots of fun, just noisy enough to be fun - too noisy to be intimate and romantic. The have about 50 tequilas. All in all a place we are very happy to have found - convenient location, too. Very friendly staff, too. Waitress asked us "Which water?", but no water ever came--- But it's a small thing, they were busy. Hate to even mention it, service was great, overall. Tapas thing is not cheap, but I've seen WAY smaller portions - just get a couple of dishes apiece and share. Pros: great food, GREAT margueritas, Great fun Cons: Bistro, not large more

Best Mexican Restaurant in the City! 7/20/2005

I went there last night and loved my meal! First off, I don't think I was ever satisfied with a restaurant margarita till Colibri. The margaritas are wonderful! Fresh and light so that you can actually taste the tequila. Hot tortillas with different chili sauces are served in place of chips and salsa. Awesome! My date and I each ordered the filet mignon. I couldn't have imagined a better steak dish. The meat was covered with chili poblano sauce and topped off with bleue cheese -- a combination I never would have expected to be sooooo good. If you get the filet -- please get the cornbread on the side. AMAZING! The cornbread is smothered with chili cream sauce. The service was great. Our waitress recommended all of our dishes. The restaurant itself isn't so romantic, but the food makes it ultra-romantic. You'll ooooh and ahhh after each bite. Pros: worth the wait, food, margaritas! Cons: expensive, long wait more

Service/food good. Value/portion sizes small. 5/10/2005

The drinks are exceptional and the food was good, but the portions were very small. Menu items are costly for the small portions. The service was exceptional, but presenting my check before my desert arrives is a big NO, NO! The gaucomole was good and warm chocolate cake desert was very good. I also had a dining certificate that I submitted with my credit card and the waiter did not notice it when he processed my card, though he did offer to give me cash for the certificate. I could not honestly recommended this restaurant due to prices for the small dishes. Pros: drinks, food, service Cons: service more

The Best Mexican Food in S.F. 3/22/2005

The food is served in tapas-sized portions, so you should order a couple of things. The food is delicious, and the services is prompt. The guacamole is homemade-tasting and is made at your table. It is served with small freshly-made tortillas. The mexican chocolate cake is exquisite. The drinks are amazing, especially the tequila selection. You can even order a tequila sampler, with 3 types of tequila shots to try. Management stops at each table, asking if they can get you anything. Quite honestly, this food rivals my Mom's, and that is incredible! I highly recommend this place if you want to dine at a real mexican restaurant. Pros: food, service, drinks more

Good Food, Good Service! 2/1/2005

This is a clever restaurant, for I have never heard of a Mexican "bistro" before. That said, the food was excellent, and the service was awesome. I was with a group of 4 people, and everything went off without a hitch. I have already recommended this place to 3 of my friends and colleagues. I'm definitely coming back! Pros: food, service, cost Cons: crowded more

A Pleasant Gem in the Rough 11/25/2004

Colibri is welcome gem of a dining option in the theater district, which really has limited reasonably priced options - unless you want to venture into the rough i.e. the tenderloin. The bar's collection is impressive and drinks are yummy (try the sangria!). My favorite was the ceviche but all the dishes we tried were flavorful. Their sophisticated blend of spices and herbs on your palate and the great presentation on your plate are a far cry from the so-called "mexican" food found elsewhere in town. Colibri would be worth the trip with or without a show or theater to catch. Pros: Reasonably Priced, Great Drinks, Energetic Crowd more

Good experience 10/10/2004

Went there on Saturday night (group of 5) and had a great time. The drinks were great and food was tasty. You have the try the guac and the ceviche as apps and the duck and filet entres were fantastic. Portions are TOO small. Small plates are fine but when you have a group of 5 and have to order 2 of the same dish to give everyone a try, it is unacceptable. Nonetheless, I will return and recommend Colibri. Pros: Tasty food, Great Atmosphere Cons: , Value more

Thank you G-d for finally bringing 'Mexican' food to SF! If you want: chips, burritos, taco salads, gordito supremo, enchilada pizza, chile grandetemeto, sour cream grande chalupa, Tostito Bell-south- of the border, or chmichanga bean gordo this is not the place to be. However, if you want the best of what real Mexican food is this is it! My favorites are: Quail Pipian, Tinga Tostadas, Fillet Mignion, Chile Ancho with goat cheese, Tamales, and many other amazing dishes For dessert, try the chocolate cake AMAZING! more

I was very pleased with our meal here. The fresh guacamole made at our table was really nice, as were the great margaritas. We followed with a great mexican lamb shank and additional sides. portions are on the small side, but the prices compensate. overall a good value and worth going to. service was good. Pros: great authentic mex, good service, good drinks more

Finally- delicios authentic Mexican food 8/16/2004

Its the closest thing to having my grandmas cooking! Burritos and such are tasty, but this is the REAL MEXICAN CUISINE. If you have ever salivated at the cooking in Like Water for Chocolate, eat here. As a party of 5, we were amazed at the good service for their first week. They promptly sat us at a comfy booth and brought us complementary fresh/hot tortillas to go with the 3 salsas (the mango pineapple is awesome). Drank some wicked sangria (I want the secret ingredient!) and delicious margaritas. The tequila list rivals Tommys in the sunset, if not more informative and knowledgeable. The Quail Pipian is not to be missed (not bony). Other tables favorites: Tinga Tostadas, Fillet Mignion, Chile Ancho with goat cheese in filo dough, Guacamole made table side to your liking, 3 different ceviche sampler, Sopes (chilorio yum!), and the crepes with cajeta (caramel). more
