Best

There a many places in SF that serve mimosas but none do it quite as well as Circa. Bottomless mimosas are only $9 with purchase of an entrée, and at an average of $10 per entrée...

Worst

This corner has had a bad run of unsuccessful restaurants. At least the folks at Cosmos were trying to make you feel welcome...Circa, not so much. Don't bother with a reservation ...

Make a reservation? That is a joke. 11/22/2006

My date and I showed up on time last evening for an 8:30pm dinner reservation. We were told it would be 10-15 minutes. 30 minutes later we had to track down the hostess to ask if our table was ready. We were told that she had no idea when it would be ready and that there was another couple still waiting ahead of us. No apology for our wait. We walked out. On a Tuesday night? I was hoping the new facelift would have changed this place...guess not. more

Not a cool spot 11/21/2006

So when did the marina need a velvet rope and bouncers in dark suits and clipboards? Come on. If you're looking a marina yuppie spot this is it. More importantly though I witnessed a terrible, dispicable act. I was with the party that left the building and saw a casually dressed man turned away after being asked if he was there for the birthday party. I wasn't there for any birthday party. I got in. There was no birthday party. I won't be back. Cons: Velvet Rope, Bouncers in dark suits with clipboards. more

This Place is Ridiculous and Should Be Shut Down Immediately 11/17/2006

As a longtime SF resident, I've watched the revolving door of restaurants/bars that have opened in this space. Circa is by far the worst incarnation. I went there on a Friday night with 4 friends - they are clearly trying to create the ""velvet rope"" feel with this place, with bouncers at the front door who decide who gets in and who doesn't. We made it in, even to the VIP lounge upstairs, but had to leave due to the overwhelming smell of bleach in the area. Also, it is blindingly bright up there. I learned, when I got outside, that only beautiful people are allowed inside. Right before my eyes, I watched a middle-aged man of color, dressed casually in jeans, be turned away at the door because there was ""a private birthday party going on inside."" Which I found interesting, since I had just been inside and was certainly not invited to any party. I walked away, feeling sick to my stomach. Do not patronize this establishment! Pros: Nothing that I could see. Cons: Read what I wrote above and be amazed. more

a great improvement 10/27/2006

It's hard to forget that cosmos was here and in some ways, the ghost of it is still here. The service is certainly much nicer than it was, but there's still some element of snarkiness here. Food however is excellent with the luxury homey menu (seems a trend lately), so I recommend giving it a try. Drinks are ok, although the liquor selection doesn't seem as amazing as you'd like and the wine selection seems just so-so. Ambiance, however, is really beautiful, so I'd recommend comming even just for that. more

Nice surprise in the MARINA 10/24/2006

If you're not a anorexic blonde, you're naturally inclined to hate the Marina crowd/scenes. But this new venue proves to provide above par with its service, and surprisingly good food with, well, not cheap but at least resonable tab. We ordered foie gras, scallops, heirloom tomato salad, lobster mac and cheese and for entrees tuna and duck breast. Foie gras was mediocre, scallops was too busy and overdone with flavors. but the lobster mac and cheese was a nice treat, taking the simple traditional comfort food to the next level. Duck breast was good too, not overcooked, and the sauce is far from the mistake of some overkill syrup many shi shi tapa/fusion eateries often make. Not perfect, but a pleasant experience nonetheless. Pros: Nice ambience, decent food Cons: limited cocktail menu more
