ok preparation, bad ingredients 10/14/2010

I had the pad thai with beef. It was ok. Noodles were al dente (good), but beef was very tough and tasted a little off. My fiance had Teriyaki stir-fry with Salmon. Sauce was ok (again, prep work was pretty good), but the Salmon was HORRIBLE. It was clearly not fresh (probably frozen, and possiblly freeze-dried since it had the texture of jerky). more

Best Thai in Austin 8/25/2010

I have been coming to Chon Som since it opened 4 years ago. Pure goodness. Love the Sushi and the Pad Thai is great! more

Get some Chon Som !! 8/25/2010

We are so lucky to have this great place to eat and have a cold beer in our area. The owners are the most down to earth friendly couple. They treat you like you came to their house to have dinner. If you get on their email list they send you amazing specials. Sushi is yummy. more

Plain bad 5/9/2010

Calamari with thai spicy sauce: The calamari were wrapped in batter puffs. They were rubbery (sign of prolonged freezing) and the crust was greasy. Sauce was good Pros: cheap Cons: food is bad more

Great Food, Great Fun.... Chom Som rocks! 10/15/2009

Chon Som is a great place for lunch and dinner. The staff is courteous and informative. The food is the best Thai and Sushi I've ever had! Pros: Food, Staff and everything in between more

GREAT THAI LUNCH SPOT 10/13/2009

They offer the same great food for lunch but with a smaller portion and great add-ons like sushi on the side or eggrolls. The cuizine fills you up with weighing you down. Pros: The food is as wonderful as its price Cons: closes at 2pm to prep for dinner more

Go and enjoy-it's fantabulous! 10/13/2009

I have never had a bad meal here! I think the Spicy Cashew is my favorite, but I also love the Pad Thai and Pad Wonsoon. The crabcake is by far the freshest, best I've ever eaten. It's not greasy in anyway. Nice & crisp on the outside, fresh light and lfuffy on the inside. Desserts are great, too. The lunch and Happy Hour specials are a real bargain-I just wish I worked closer so I could go for lunch! Pros: Quality and price Cons: every once in a while, service is a tad slow more

Go for everything 10/2/2009

Consistently great fish quality. The chef really knows what he is doing and always has served great cuts and variety. The curries are authentic and are prepared to your heat tolerance. They go great with cold beer! Thanks and see you there soon! Pros: Great fish, great people, awesome fried ice cream! Cons: too far from my house! more

AWESOME PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!! 5/19/2009

We have been coming here for quite some time. the owners are great!!! Food is VERY VERY VERY Good!!! Pros: GREAT FOOD, EVEN BETTER PRICES more

great food...great staff...and even open on christmas and new years eve 12/16/2008

where do i start? what an amazing restaurant! great food at excellent prices. the staff is wonderful. you will see two of the owners there at all times creating amazing thai and sushi dishes. and speaking of sushi, you must try the dynamite shrimp. its to die for, if not want to sell the kids to get at least one more! the waitstaff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and will help you pick the perfect meal if you arent sure what you are wanting that evening. great lunch menu. great happy hour specials every day. Pros: what isnt to love about this place? Cons: that i can only eat so much in one sitting more

Below Average Food 12/3/2008

The food was disappointing, and the service was really slow. Shrimp seemed like very poor quality. The fried rice we had was not good. much effort was made to make it look good. There is much better Thai food out there for the same price range. more

What more could you ask for in a Thai Restaurant? 10/17/2008

To be honest, you couldn't ask for much more. From friendly service and staff, including the owners, to the menu and food, Thai and a full sushi bar. I was skeptical with my only run in with Thai was Pad Thai. Before long, I had managed to sample every rice, curry, and noodle dish on the menu and still there isn't one dish that i dislike. Another big perk is that you can order all the entrees in whatever level of ""hotness"" you can handle. Good stuff. If you normally go for pretty spicy food, I'd suggest starting off on hot which is only the second of 5 levels of ""heat"". But don'f forget the sushi! Fresh ingriedents and a large selection of rolls as well as sashimi are available. Two rolls i recommend right away are the Madonna roll (ask the sushi chef) and the Dynamite Shrimp (this stuff if like crack...you might as well order two). Good wine and beer selection as well... Pros: great food, good cost Cons: its not next door to my house more

Add this to your list of places to check out! 6/1/2008

The sushi is very fresh and at a good price. The pad thai is also a favorite. I got hooked on this place when I was working with Relay For Life. Chon Som had a team and the visits started there. Pros: Great Food! more

Avoid the Sushi 5/10/2008

My husband and I went there for a late lunch after reading all the great reviews here. When we got there is was empty which was not a good sign. We should have left immediately but decided to stay since we were hungry after the 30 minute drive it took us to get there. We ordered rolls and nigiri. After a dreadfully long wait, mind you there was no one there, our sushi arrived. The rice was undercooked and the fish was beyond dead. It didn't have the oily sheen on top like fresh sushi should instead the color looked flat and dry. The rolls arrived after waiting an eternity and what we typically expect from the staple rolls we'd get looked awfully peculiar. For instance, the spicy scallop roll was surely spicy but there wasn't a morsel of scallop visible. My husband and I tried everything but I left my all time favorite: ikura. Since my 2-yr stay in Tokyo I've acquired a keen taste for the perfect ikura. When the waiter brought it over, I had one look at it and decided to pass. Each egg looked half cooked and didn't have the shiny, translucent, burnt orange color I expected. My husband had a piece before I could stop him. He's in bed now with stomach cramps. I can't speak for their cooked Thai food but I'd go somewhere else for sushi. Pros: plenty of parking; convenient for the folks up north Cons: bad sushi more

Asian Fusion 4/30/2008

I had a Pad Thai to go. It was good other than the fact it had a metallic tinge to the food. It was probably the fork I was using. more

Such a cute little place! 3/21/2008

We went here with a group of ten people for a birthday and they were so accommodating. I found them through citysearch and the food was delicious and well presented. You could tell a lot of work went into the preparation. The fried calamari was delicious and all the sauces were as well. Everyone was happy with their meal. The owners came and spoke with us after our meal and were sooo very nice, they alone would make you want to go back! Oh and the birthday girl got free saki bombs, which was unexpected and just another example of how the atmosphere was basically ""we're all family here."" I loved it and everyone can't wait to go back for the next birthday! Pros: Food, The owners, bathrooms were immaculate! Cons: Wish it was closer to downtown more

bad sushi 1/26/2008

I went with my family for the sushi happy hour and the sushi was awful. it was warm and mushy, not fresh at all. more

Great Thai in far north Austin 12/7/2007

This is great thai food and friendly staff. The decor is oddly stark and modern but still comfortable. Try the tempura or thom ka gai. more

my Favorite 8/30/2007

I heard about Chon Som from three different people about 2 months ago...so my Husband took me and the girls out for a Sunday Brunch. I Loved it. The sushi was Amazing... and my young girls enjoyed Egg Rolls and Soup! My husband and I went back on an evening date more recently, and had another great experience. We had a wonderul date, and the Delicious food and polite Waiter at Chon Som made it one to remember. Pros: Great Sushi, friendly staff, relaxed environment more

Good, but not GREAT! 7/9/2007

I am looking for excellent Thai cuisine in Austin and I still have not found it. I drove from South Austin in search of what the reviews say is the best Thai in Austin. I was one of two tables seated on a Saturday night at 7:30pm, not very comforting. I first tried a couple of sushi rolls. They were good and fresh, but not outstanding. I still like Suzi's Rollingwood the best of all. I then ordered Pad Thai and Beef Massuman Curry. The Pad Thai was good but nothing outstanding and the Beef Curry was flavorful, but could have been mistaken for beef soup. There was a lot of sauce! I have had GREAT Thai food in Houston, New York, San Francisco and even Frankfurt. I am disappointed that in a city with as many Asian people as we have, we do not have GREAT Thai food! Don't get me wrong. This place is clean and the food is good, but average good. Pros: Good Cons: Not GREAT! more
