Don't Support Disrepectful Restaurants 4/14/2012

Save yourself money and time. This place has horrible service! We were there for a birthday dinner and were sat at the Hibachi grill. Once the food was ate, they came out and told us they had a special place to seat us for the birthday cake. However, that was a lie. They just wanted us to give up our seats so they can seat more guest. They gave us our bills at different table. I have never felt so disrepsected in my life. I will never eat their again. The food is not the best and they use too much butter. more

Chi Tung is Grotesquely Overrated 10/15/2010

Chi Tung is one of those places locals rave about but which doesn't actually earn its reputation for the experienced diner. This is the most grotesquely overrated restaurant I've ever been to (and I've given it more than one chance to prove itself). It's famous for its ridiculously large portion sizes, and its surprisingly low prices. But the food is mediocre at best, so the low prices are only fair. They're always busy and it shows: their preparation and their presentation are obviously hurried.\r \r Chi Tung offer three separate menus: Chinese, Thai, and Japanese. But this restaurant is Chinese-owned and -operated, and in the end, it's just another Chinese-American family-style restaurant specializing in giant heaps of fried food, and free refills on soft drinks.\r \r The Chinese menu is full of such Chinese-inspired American dishes as Egg Foo Young and breaded, fried morsels of chicken or shrimp that are indistinguishable from those served at Panda Express. There are not many vegetable dishes on the menu, and the rice is often under-cooked.\r \r The Thai menu is completely inauthentic and unadventurous. By that I mean that if the dishes are not authentic in their preparation (using Thai ingredients such as Nam Pla), they could at least be creative and surprising, offering something new and different to justify their lack of authenticity. But these dishes are neither. The Pad Thai is buried in crushed peanuts, with a only hint of tamarind, and other noodle dishes are drowned in an overly sweet soy-based sauce, so that in the end, it all tastes like the same nondescript pile of noodles and sauce you would expect from an Chinese-American family-style restaurant. Nothing Thai about it.\r \r The most inauthentic and unappealing of the menus is the Japanese. The sushi rice is undercooked (or possibly cooked too far in advance and allowed to dry out at room temperature). The fish is obviously frozen and thawed. This is not uncommon in the Midwest, because truly fresh fish is so expensive here, but Chi Tung's fish both looks and tastes like low-quality stuff. Keeping with their tradition of absurdly large portions, the sushi is too large to eat in one bite, or with chopsticks. Regular customers seem to equate this enormousness with quality, but Chi Tung's attempt at sushi goes against the whole concept of the cuisine. True sushi is supposed to be elegant, with (usually) small morsels, and a wide and artful variety of seafood and vegetables. But here we have more fried shrimp with a choice of super-sweet sauce or super-spicy sauce.\r \r The restaurant itself is reminiscent of the tourist attractions in the River North area (near the Hard Rock and Rainforest Cafe on the north side of Chicago). The building is large, with lots of traditional Chinese décor, and the mostly-female wait staff dress in silk uniforms. Customers routinely wait for their tables, because at lunch and at dinner, there's always a noisy crowd.\r \r Overall, Chi Tung is a perfect example of the idea that quantity does not equal quality. This is actually a low-quality restaurant famous only for its monstrously large portions. \r \r Do not travel very far to try Chi Tung. If you live in the area, Sesame Inn in Evergreen Park and Sushi Thaime in Oak Lawn are far superior. If you want to enjoy authentic Asian cuisine on the South Side, and are willing to travel a little, try Thai Smile in Palos Heights. more

If you're willing to wait for great food... 4/29/2009

If you live in the North side of Chicago it's easy to find a Chinese, Thai or Japanese restaurant but if you're in the South side of Chicago it isn't. Everyone knows about this restaurant especially if you're from the South side, I guess that's why it gets full and waiting can be up to an hour. If you love Thai and Japanese food it's worth the wait especially if it's affordable and comes in a big serving. I like the fact that you get your money's worth. \r \r Unfortunately since the environment isn't cozy but more family style the service tends to be sloppy and rude. Everything is great but they should upgrade the decor and re-evaluate there staff. \r \r Pros: Food, Food, Food Cons: Service, Parking, Long wait more

Best Chinese Resurant in Chicago 10/31/2006

I love Chi Tung and so does my family whenever my family decides to meet we always pick here. Their prices are reasonable and you get a lot of food you could share a large with 2 or 3 people. I will say that they can get pretty crowded so if you go make reservations or get there early. My favorite dish is the Pad Thai. Also when they say it's spicy it's really spicy. If youre in the area stop there and go for lunch or dinner you won't be disappointed. more

SUSHI-BAR, CHINESE, JAPANESE, THAI FOOD....NEED I SAY MORE? 10/17/2006

Unfortunately, I've only been to this place once...but I can't wait to go back. This place has a super duper menu, like I said, Sushi, Chinese, Japanese, Thai...and it's all very very good. Plus they have a buffet...ohh! Even better! The service is very prompt and nice, pricing is very affordable, the wait is a little bit much since it's such a wanted place, also the parking is tight, but all of it worth the wait! more

BEST IN CHICAGO - WORTH THE DRIVE 9/21/2006

Go here, just GO! It rocks. They have 3 HUGE menus of Japanese, Thai, and Chinese. There is something for everyone. I go 2 times a week. The service is quick and polite, and entertaining. The prices are SO reasonable. If you live in the city . . drive here ( theres Parking!) it is worth it, and you would not be alone. Chi - Tung - Chi FUN Pros: food, service, quick wait Cons: NOTHING! more

The Home Delivery and Sit Down Salivation of the South Side, Awesome Japanese Food Too 9/7/2006

And then there came to Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Beverly, Mount Greenwood and surrounding communities a miracle of cuisine in the now expanded restaurant known as Chi Tung, slayer of appetites.\r \r Named after the great warrior chef of the Tongue Dynasty, Chi Tung follows in the glorious tradition of plentiful and mouthwatering food at low prices that made him Emporer of all lands that he chose to deliver to. Such was his nobility and generosity, that Chi Tung delivered farther and wider than most restaurants, but profited by it, as his loyal customers often ordered from afar, though could not resist visits to his wonderous shrine next to CVS on Kedzie just South of 95th Street.\r \r Not content to serve food from his own land only, Chi Tung sought wizards from Thailand and Japan to bring him magic recipies from those countries, with so many recipes that now Chi Tung offers three different take out menus full of succulent dishes from the mildest to the hottest palate, all served without the accursed MSG.\r \r The mighty Chi's sucess has been so great that his temple was forced to move and expand into its current giant quarters, yet still the faithful come from miles around, often preferring pick-up than wait for the giant and luxurious seating, closely packed that it may be, more romantic as the night passes on and the crowd thins, the glow of a majestic meal singing sweetly in the night.\r \r So many choices. Large means LARGE. A meal for two, or three, if you are nuns or models. Spicy warnings are not to be ignored. Mild dishes are quite good.\r \r Overall, it really is a great place to eat. Delivery a modest $2.00.\r \r I give it 10 Tungs.\r \r (The Chi Tung's managers pronounce it ""Chee Tounge"" not ""Shy Tounge"", but they'll never correct you if you get it wrong.) \r \r Peter, Restaurant Reviewer and Spell Wrecker\r The Peter Files Blog of Comedy, Satire and Commentary\r Pros: Highest quality food, fun, exciting ambience Cons: Crowded but you often meet friends and neighbors you've missed! Lot parking is tight, but this is the South side, lots of nearby side street parking more

THIS PLACE IS SOOOOOO FANTASTIC!!!! 8/1/2006

On a day off, I always try to go to their buffet. They have so many items to choose from - and the selections aren't off the ""cheap"" menu. You can get sushi at the buffet, crab rangoon, chicken & mushrooms (one of my faves!), etc. I have never been disappointed with anything on the buffet - they even have fried chicken (which, surprising, is quite good)! It's crowded, so be prepared to wait - and to take over an hour for lunch because of the crowds.\r \r Their dinner prices are very reasonable, including the drink menu. Various sushi selections are presented in a mini boat - with the pieces of sushi as ""passengers"" in the boat. Very cute idea - and it's neat that they invest so much $$ in items for presentation.\r \r My very favorite item is shrimp & lobster sauce. The shrimp is/are huge - like mini lobsters!!! The sauce is perfect - I'm drooling just thinking about it. I've never had an item that I didn't like from any of the menus (Thai, Chinese, Japanese).\r \r The serve people are very attentive and kind. I remember when this was a small carry-out place - good to see them do so well!!!! Their new place is quite large, the parking lot is huge and with the good reviews THEY ARE ALWAYS CROWDED. Pros: Good service, excellent quality food, great prices. No complaints here! Cons: Crowds - but that's what happens when a place gets good reviews! more

Great eats 6/20/2006

Plus the food isn't expensive for dinner and the give you soooo much it's ridiculous. Pros: Great value, nice atmosphere, wide variety of food Cons: busy, loud, sometimes parking can be a hassle more
