Best

I really enjoyed myself here. The food is excellent and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Worst

I write this assuming that the people reading it work hard for their money and would like to spend it wisely. Simply put, this isn't the place to do it. Unless of course you enjoy...

Crazy chef - disgusting food. do not go, you will regret it. 3/4/2007

I am French and I can say this place is truly bad. EVERYTHING IS DISGUSTING. it is a disgrace to French cuisine. the chef is actually not even pure French (has some kind of German accent). the food is not fresh and badly cooked. the croissants, pain au chocolat...seem like they are baked once a week because of poor business. on top of it, he doesn't treat his staff well (I obviously understand what he tells them in his awful german French accent). I just don't see how much longer before he closes. and I hope that will be soon, cause I live in the Gramercy area, and there is a line of great people waiting out there that can do so much better than this guy. Frederic, casse toi, tu nous fais honte! more

Service, Food -- Both BAD 9/27/2006

Okay, the german potato pancakes were not good -- too many dried herbs, not enough focus on potato, and cooked too long, too dark. The accompanying yogurt was curdled. The applesauce was good. I was going to give it another chance though because of the peaceful atmosphere - with Umbrellas of Cherbourg-type music. The menu I ordered from priced the pancakes at $8.95 (maybe $9.95, he refused to let me look at the menu again) when I went downstairs to pay, the bill I was handed said $11.95 + tax + tip. When I argued my point, I was told, haughtily in my opinion, that the pancakes were being removed from that menu and the price was $11.95 -- so I left, unhappy, ill-fed, knowing I would never ever return. Were it a staff member who wouldn't adjust the price, I could forgive it but it was Frederic himself. Bah! Nicht immer! Pros: Ambience Cons: Arrogance, too many dried herbs, not a gentle touch with frying more

the worst eggs benedict I ever had 11/12/2005

Yuck. Really, really bad. Not even recognizable as eggs benedict. And the french toast was bad (and late arriving to our table) too. I'd never go there again. more

It was an amazing discovery! 10/1/2005

Although it is somewhat out of place-located in ""little india"", this french oriented patisserie was a very pleasant encounter after walking several blocks in a cold day. Even though the place is under staffed, the bit of waiting time was quenched by the charm of the place and the kindness of Frederick, the owner and chef. The dessert selection is great and my girlfriend and I recommend visiting it without hesitation. Pros: Charming, Romantic Gem Cons: Bit slow more

Bewildering 5/7/2005

We ordered ""french toast with egg and spinach,"" expecting to get regular french toast with the egg and spinach on the side. What came out were some mushy slices of bread COVERED with a spinach goo/sauce and a fried egg. It tasted awful, and my coffee was weak. It took us over 30 minutes to get our food, and saw others waiting about the same time just to order. We saw some people leaving after they ordered, obviously fed up. To make things worse, the prices are not cheap and they already include 15% tip on the bill. The thing is, I saw three francophone parties dining there, so I'm wondering if I just ""don't get it."" The whole place is run by one chef (who take the orders and runs downstairs to cook it), one waiter (who delivers the food), and one bus boy, so they are definitely understaffed! Pros: cute atmosphere Cons: slow service, bad food more

Stay Away from the French Toast! 5/7/2005

I tried the ""World Famous French Toast"" (awarded in 1988). You can have the French toast by itself, with bacon and eggs, or with spinach and eggs. Now most people would probably assume that the spinach and eggs would be placed on the side but to my dismay, my French toast was lathered in mushy chopped spinach and the sunny side up egg was sitting on top. I dont know if it is a French thing but I found the combination of chopped spinach mixed in with the cinnamon and sugar of the French toast to be a truly disgusting mixture. The French toast is basically a soggy piece of bread with a hint of cinnamon and sugar. I guess there is a reason why it hasnt won the ""World Famous"" award in the past 17 years. Pros: Nice Chef, Life Music Cons: Slooooow Service, Spinach French Toast more

Worst brunch ever in Manhattan 12/4/2004

Appearances can be VERY deceiving. We walked into what we thought was a cute, quaint place for Sunday Brunch but left with nothing but horrible memories. We waited over 20 minutes to place our order with the chef himself, who was not only impatient but unhelpful. Finally we get our meal - a 4$ croissant that is half the regular size and has not yet risen, ""french toast"" slopped with cinnamon (and no syrup to be found), runny eggs (practically raw) doused in oil and herbs, and the most disgusting 'all-natural' fruit juice ever. Only the coffee was good. All those around us had the same look of disgust. I just can't believe how chef Frederic is still in business. Pros: 'unforgettable' Cons: , service more

Truly SINFUL french toast 3/27/2004

I ate brunch here with friends this morning, and we're dumbfounded that this place does any business. The food here is UNBELIEVABLY HORRIBLE. According to the menu, their 'signature french toast' was top rated by a reputable publication. Ok, so that was back in '88, but how much worse could it have gotten in 16 years? Apparently, quite bad and unfortunately we all ordered the same thing. Each order arrived on a small white plate with two, fist-sized, unidentifiable, brown lumps. Soggy on top, and charred on the bottom, this nightmare dish tasted overwhelmingly of egg with the oddest aftertaste that can only be described as 'fishy.' I dare you to try this for yourself. On your way out, take notice of all the uneaten brown lumps left by your fellow patrons. My friends and I did, and we're still laughing in complete disbelief over this experience. Pros: , memorable experience Cons: , unedible food more

Esoteric 12/30/2002

Chez le chef is definitely unusual... from the handlebar mustache of Frederic to the pink bagels. It sells an incredibly wide selection of foods, which mostly hit but sometimes miss. (some things are a little fussy for my palate). Something to watch out for in summer is the gazpacho... I haven't had better in NYC. more

Tres magnifique! 11/22/2002

The pastry is heavenly, the service divine. This not-too-pricey little shop will give you a beautiful latte and cookie for $5-6, and much better than Starbucks to be sure. Chef Frederic is very nice, informative and friendly. It's a great place to brunch. Pros: Escape the crush!, Beautiful pastry!, Great selection! Cons: Slightly expensive, Rsv recommended more

Truly awful food 10/17/2002

A very pleasant owner, who patiently told me all of the specials and items on the prix fixe over the phone, but that's the only nice thing I can say about Chez le Chef. Well, I suppose their bread was also good. However the entree was truly awful. My wife and I ordered the ""Thai Beef Stew"" to go. She tried a bite, spat it out, took another bite elsewhere, and spat it out. I took only one bite. Then the entire $17.50 entree went straight into the garbage can. We declined even to feed it to our dog. Pros: Nice proprietor Cons: Lousy food more

Great desserts! 9/16/2002

Hi. The bakery items are wonderful and the food is amazing (but pricey!) This is definitely a place worth coming to. more
