Don't Waste Your Time 8/8/2010

I've lived in Salt Lake City for several years, and have been to most of the city's bars. In regards to service, Cheers to You is absolutely at the bottom of the list. Most of Salt Lake City's 'dive bars' provide excellent charm and friendly service. Not Cheers to You. Their bartenders often act as if they're doing you a favor by getting you a drink, and will take their time or ignore you altogether... unless you're blond and big-breasted. During my most recent visit, they took 20 minutes to close my tab - while helping everyone else around me. If you want rude bartenders and terrible service, visit Cheers to You. more

Great Place 4/23/2010

So I have been gong to Cheers for awhile now and I can tell you that the best people go there and work there. Sure every bar will have its problem customers but the staff handles it very well. I read the last three posts and cant help to think that they are very isolated incidents. I have been going to Cheers about 3-4 times per week for the last few years and me and my friends have never had a issue. This really is a great bar. Pros: Cheap Drinks, Good times Cons: bad singing on Kareoke night. Needs better singers more

Dangerous Place 2/1/2010

I'm new to Salt Lake City and went into a bar near the Federal Court House for a drink. The bartender named "Pat" was rude and obnoxinous. After serving my drink he went out of the bar for a smoke. I tried to make small talk with a customer who made a physical threat against me. I immediately departed the establishment. Pat the bartender was outside smoking and when I reported the problem, refused to take any action saying, "I know the guy and he's okay." I have filed criminal charges against the individual who made the threat. Stay away from Cheers - real bad news. Pros: None Cons: Threats of physical violence more

Bad Service 12/7/2009

The bartenders are meatheads with no tact! I'm down with dive bars but if I'm paying money, I want some respect. I will never step foot in there again. Treat the ladies better and the men will follow. Cons: Service more

Never go back 10/26/2009

I will never be returning to Cheers to You. I had been in Cheers a few times before and always had a fun time. Sitting either at the bar or a booth--people were very nice. I had even recommended it to friends of mine. The last time however it was completely different. Not only were my friends and I called obscene names many times over, but we were also told that we were going to have a beer bottle broken over our head if we did not shut up.........all for NOT rooting for the New York Giants and New York Yankees. We actually had other patrons apologize to us for what he was saying to us. Last time I checked, people were allowed to root for teams they wanted as long as it was all in fun........that is not the case at Cheers to You. Unless you are a fan of any NY team, I highly recommend spending your money somewhere else. If I could.......I would give it a 0 out of 5. Cons: Patrons more

My Home Away from Home 3/29/2009

I have been a patron of Cheers to You for many, many years. Here I have been able to find friendship, love, laughter, and a good kick in the pants when it was needed. The staff has become like family and are some of my greatest friends. These are people who tell it like it is and want nothing but to see you happy. They are some of the most honest people I have ever met. They love their jobs and it shows, in the quality of their drinks and their prompt service. The atmosphere is always fun. I can walk in all alone and usually find a friend or two or three already there. The patrons will always rally behind you and your team when they or you are down. Support like this, cannot be found anywhere else. This place may not be for everyone, and that's okay. However, for those looking for great drinks, awesome service, friends, love, and laughter this is the place. Pros: Staff, Drinks, Patrons, Atmosphere more

Best Bar in Salt Lake 2/11/2009

I recently went to 'Cheers' with a friend from out of town (NYC) on a Monday night. This place used to be a smoky dump. Boy was I surprised at my last visit. Not only is the air clean, but they have obviously given the joint a scrub down and fresh coat of paint. It still has that South Philly feel, but with a load of high definition TV's. They also have increased the size of their drink pours (it used to be one ounce and I've noticed a lot of bars still pour that amount) but don't appear to have raised their prices much if any. The service was impeccable as well. I've seen the bartender before. He's been at different bars in SLC over the years and is obviously one of the best in SLC. It was great to see him working at Cheers and my friend commented multiple times that the bartender could have fit in at any of the top local bars in Manhattan. One of the reasons I hadn't been to Cheers in a while (besides how smoky it used to be) was because there were a lot of what I call 'professional drinkers' that made non-regulars feel uncomfortable. They were noticably missing. I asked the bartender about it and he confirmed that Cheers has cleaned up the bar both physically and figuratively. There were still plenty of regulars but we felt like we fit right in. Cheers is a great place to show off Salt Lake's downtown scene. Pros: Comfortable, inexpensive, cool place, friendly staff. Cons: We had to park a half a block away on a COLD night. more

Paying Customers beware!! You will lose your shirt!! 12/6/2007

Not that we have ever been fans of this place, but the last time we were in Cheer to You, The bartender talked us into getting the full year membership. We thought what the hell we might visit again during the holidays. Well just so you know when you buy a membership to this place do not expect them to ever record it in their so-called books. They couldnt find our membership. While they were talking to the bartender who sold it to us who couldn't remember because he appeared to be drunk himself, my boyfriend went to front men's bathroom (the only bathrooms in the place). When my boyfriend came out of the men's room a different bouncer that hadnt been looking for our membership...pushed him out the door (we were sober......this fires up my boyfriend!) He pushed the bouncer back, and the bouncer ripped off my boyfriend shirt and his sweater!!! This is so trashy. This obviously is how their typical clientel behaves that frequent this hole. We unfortunately were the vicitms of this guys usual routine with customers. If you like trashy bouncers and losing your shirt this is your place. Pros: Drinks are very expensive for a dive, if you like to be insulted this is your place Cons: there are plenty of other places to get a drink downtown-WITH FRIENDLY PEOPLE!! more

Great for Locals 10/1/2007

I like this bar because it is very homegrown in my opinion... its not your hip, neon lit, preppy bar. Its rough in looks which gives you the feeling its your bar, your local hangout. Weekends are packed, which I prefer more than the 60 year old war vet sitting on the end of the bar. Karaoke nights on Fridays are where it's at, great energy and fun. The bar is smoky yet its a bar. Its expected. All in all its a great bar to go to if you are looking for a real social hangout. Pros: Great Atmosphere, regulars, Karaoke Cons: Slight walk from parking, smoking can bothersome, a good wait for a drink sometimes more

Lucky Locals 4/2/2005

I definatly agree with the other reviewers in that Cheers is a great little bar if your a local or in the restaurant industry. If your not, then go there with someone who is because undoubtedly you will run into someone they know. Cheers is also great for and after work drink, usually not too crowded during the week but can be shoulder to shoulder on the week ends. Drinks are inexpensive and the atmoshpere is smokey, and can be loud, but it is a great time if you enjoy the dive bar kind of scene or if you want to meet some local people. And if your from out of town expect to pay membership, it's still Utah. Pros: great local scene, cheap drinks Cons: crowded more

Poor service..... 1/19/2005

I agree with the two most recent posts, I did read them before going here for the first time. I figured I would give it a chance. They were right. The bartender on duty did not treat me like I would ever want to come back and I have no reason to go back since paying for my membership then destroying my membership card that night. Basically if you know the tender well you will get your service, outsiders will be blown off. Cons: , Bartender, Bartender more

Bartenders no good 7/12/2004

The bartenders at cheers to you is why I'll never go back! I've gone their twice and two different bartenders always with the same attitude! They say "no cover charge" but you still have to buy a membership. more

Those annoying customers! 12/10/2002

While the potential for this pub to be a nice, comfortable, "neighborhood" watering hole is definitely there, the people that run the place ruin all it might otherwise be very appealing. I've given this place many chances to prove that it can be what I want; a friendly, casual, no-frills bar that appeals to everyone. Unfortunately the "bouncers," and bartenders prove over and over again that they should be in any business as long as it doesn't involve actually having to deal with paying customers. They seem to make an exeption for the group of 5 or 6 of their good friends who always seem to be occupying the right-hand side of the bar. Please, will someone who actually knows how to run a pub hurry and buy this place! I'll be happy to return then. Pros: location, diverse clientle Cons: service, staff, lousy bartending more

Cozy little bar 6/13/2002

It's sort of a hole in the wall: Chances are if you frequent Main Street, you've probably walked by this bar a hundred times and never noticed it. Inside, it's pretty dark and close with several smallish tables along the wall that are good for two or three people, max. There are larger tables in back. The service is friendly and the food is quite good--sandwiches aren't fancy, but they're well made with good ingredients. Pros: Good sandwiches, After-work bar Cons: No parking, Dark interior more

my kind of place... 6/9/2002

Cheers to You probably isn't for everyone, but if you're looking for a place to grab a couple of quick drinks after work I highly recommend checking in. It's the kind of place you can just cruise in by yourself and your bound to strike up a conversation with someone. Cons: it's Utah... more

  • In Short
Aside from cheap beer, pool tables and Friday night karaoke, this bar also serves a decent sandwich. If you're a fan of grease, try the French dip, although the cold cuts are tasty, too--pair the Italian hoagie with a pint of Uinta Cutthroat. You're likely to see barflies sitting next to suits who just got off the 9-to-7. A great spot for lunch if you like "The Price is Right," which is on the TV daily.
