Quaint little spot with one drawback 7/20/2009

My husband and I were visiting some friends this weekend in Edmonds and we all decided to stop at Chanterelle. It's a very charming, old style building that was very inviting and friendly and after a day of non-stop shopping we were all famished! The atmosphere was great and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. Our lunches were very tasty and the coffee was rich and delicious and it was a great way to cap off a perfect day. However, as we were finishing our meals, something happened that left a very sour taste in all our mouths. A very loud and inappropriate vulgar statement came from the kitchen. I won't repeat what was said only that it was laced with the F-word and offensive to those with alternative lifestyles which includes our dear friends. Several others around us also heard this as we looked at one another with what can only be describe as shock. We paid our bill and left. I certainly hope the owners of this fine establishment reads this review and takes some sort of action to prevent this from happening again. They have such a diamond in the rough and it would be a shame to have such a smear preventing it from being the success that it could be. I would recommend Chanterelle to everyone, but ask for a seat away from the mouth in the kitchen. Pros: Charming building w/ a great staff Cons: One very loud mouth more

Best breakfast in Edmonds, Mixed for Dinner 1/10/2009

We've had breakfast at Chantrelle's several times and every time it is outstanding. The food is delicious, good coffee and good service. We decided to try them for dinner for New Year's Eve. The service was excellent, but we ordered an appetizer that was way too salty. Our entrees both came with what the menu said was risotto. Instead of risotto, it was rice pilaf with succotash vegetables. I would expect this side dish from Denny's. However, our entrees themselves were fantastic. My husband had the scallops and I had the chicken in pastry. Both dishes were perfection. My chicken in pastry was something I would imagine a world class chef would make. Overall, I would recommend Chantrelle's, just skip the risotto. Pros: breakfast, coffee, service, prices Cons: Risotto more

Best Downtown Edmonds Eating 7/26/2008

Chanterelle in Edmonds is a MUST place to dine when in Edmonds. With it?s warm yellow and woodsy interior in one of Edmonds historic buildings, it is updated, hip, and almost funky with an espresso bar, large dessert showcase and a wall of wines. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Favorites are their large salad entrees, the (best) fish tacos, and the cioppino ? a real treat on a cold wet day. \r \r On my last visit I had the chicken panini with brie and chutney - an excellent choice. It was accompanied by either soup or one of four salads. I chose the spinach salad with mushrooms, asiago cheese and almonds, dressed in a light, fragrant dressing. My companion had the chicken quesadilla and raved about it. Although we had no room for dessert, the selection was tempting and is something to look forward to on our next visit. \r \r Anyone looking for great food, a varied menu, good taste and price should make Chanterelle a regular dining spot. If you are lucky to get a table by the front window, you have a view of the water and you are always right in the heart of downtown Edmonds. So, walking around before or after your meal makes for a perfect day. Bon Appetit!\r \r \r Pros: Great Food Cons: Parking more

Great food and atmosphere with reasonable prices! 7/16/2008

It had been several months since my husband and I have dined at Chanterelle Restaurant in Edmonds but we were back last week, wondering what took us so long to get back! In a world of cookie cutter chain restaurants and high end (read big bucks) trendy places, Chanterelle definitely fills the gap, and nicely so. From one of the owners greeting us at the door, to a personable young server we have seen there before, to a nice eclectic meets 'old world' decor, we reminded ourselves that this is one of our favorite places to go. And that's before we even began dinner! We looked over the wine list and were really happy to see that almost all of the bottles, about 50 choices I think, were under $30. It was so nice to not have to limit ourselves to just a few bottom rung ones. We chose a wine I saw written up recently called Fleur de Chardonnay and completely enjoyed it. I love to try new and different things, and there is always a new three course special sheet with different dishes at really reasonable prices. I started with the tomato bisque (gotta have it whenever I go there, it's sooo good), then a tossed green salad. I chose the fish special which was salmon with some kind of Thai red curry sauce with a slaw with lots of fresh cilantro and mint. It was light and flavorful, the perfect choice for a warm summer night. My husband is not as adventurous as I am in his choices which works out fine here too, because there are lots of classics like steak and shrimp, lasagne, etc. He actually got the lamb shank which was huge and tender, with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. Next time I think I might just get one of their big entree salads. We saw a lot of them going out, they have really unique preparations, not just the usual three or four you see everywhere.\r \r Afterward dinner we splurged on some dessert (white chocolate coconut cake, yum!) and latte's. We promised ourselves we won't wait too long before we go back!\r \r Pros: Nice selection of different types of foods and wines. Cons: Too many good choices, I can never decide what to have! more

Nice location and atmosphere, mediocre food 7/10/2008

Chantrelle's is a nice place and has great desserts, but if you are looking for economical, high quality food this may not be the place for you. The have some great menu items, but for some dishes portion sizes are small and usually don't include enough of a key ingredient for what you pay. more

Save it for breakfast 4/12/2008

After eating here for breakfast and loving it we decided to go here for dinner. My blue cheese salad was good, but my husband paid extra to ""upgrade"" to a caesar and all it was was leaf lettuce with caesar dressing. The last time I checked I thought a caesar was supposed to be made with Romaine. For dinner I ordered ""basil lime salmon"". I tasted neither basil nor lime and what I got was a low quality piece of salmon slathered in gravy that tasted like those powered packets of Knor. And to top it off, it was served with FROZEN veggies! You know, those mixed bags you can buy that have the broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. I don't even buy those let alone expect to pay $20/entree and be served that. My husband ordered cioppino and it was bad. Some of the mussels were foul and I could smell them from across the table. blech. We will be saving this restaurant for breakfast. more

Overpriced food and small portion sizes. 12/6/2007

Food is overpriced and portions sizes are small. They do have several good items on the menu but other items are very bland. I often times leave still feeling hungry from an unsatisfying meal. The restaurant is also very noisy and not a good place to go if you want to have a conversation with someone over lunch. Pros: Location Cons: Overpriced more

Yummy and Interesting Candlelight Dinner Digs 11/11/2007

I have been to this restaurant several times and have not been let down (even with my high expectations). The double mango salmon is quite good and memorable. The pork loin is tender and has a beautiful twist of interesting seasoning with fruit. The other dish I've had for dinner has been the meatloaf made with beef and pork... making for a lighter flavor and done quite well. Our plates are always very hot and the food is better than just right, with the serving size leaving you with a take home leftover that is a great treat for your next meal. I haven't indulged in their gorgeous desserts, but they appear to be fresh and worth the treadmill time. You get a fresh, fresh, fresh salad with your dinner and bread and butter pre-meal that is quite the thumb's up. Very few restaurants in Edmonds I can recommend, but this one has passed all my toughest scrutiny and is definitely one worth trying. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing. There's quite a wine selection to choose from if you're a drinker. This place is now my local standby restaurant. Pros: Relaxed and Quiet Atmosphere, Interesting Food, Good Service, Cons: Seats are slightly uncomfortable but worth it more

Lukewarm food.... 6/24/2007

My husband and I live in Edmonds. We're often drawn to the hustle and bustle of Chanterelle's, but when we dine, we're always disappointed by the food. This morning was no exception, We were seated quicky for breakfast and the food came out promptly, but like all of our other visits, it was NOT HOT and FRESH but lukewarm. You could tell the potatoes were pre-prepared, probably sitting on a steamer, barely warm and the serving size sparse. My eggs benedict, was good, but once again lukewarm.\r Another bummer is that they don't have a deep fryer. So instead of getting some hot frys with your $10 plus dinner sandwich, you get bagged chips. I wonder how hard it would be to invest in something that most people long for and expect? Everyone loves frys! \r I really LONG TO LOVE Chanterelles, the ambience is bright and cheery, the location is prime but the food to me is average and the portion sizes are nothing to write home about. If they jazzed up the menu and made sure the food came HOT and fresh, it would get a much highter rating. I'm giving it two stars because my husband and I always get lukewarm food and we don't feel like there's anything on the menu that you can rave about....just average food you could make better at home. We hope someday it will improve!\r Pros: Great people, cheery ambiance, it's Edmonds! Cons: Lukewarm food, skimpy portions, average menu more

Hmmm.... 10/11/2005

I have frequented Chantrelle's for breakfast, with very good results. Today, I decided to venture there for lunch, expecting the same quality and flavor. I was dissapointed. A friend and I decided to each get a cup of soup and share a ""thai"" chicken wrap. The soups were decent, but possibly over-seasoned, and definatley over-priced. The wrap was absolutley laughable. It was touted to be thai, but more resembled a mix-and-match southwestern stir-fry with a hint of soy sauce and an abundance of canned corn, wrapped up in a odd looking (and stale) tortilla. Maybe it was just an off-day for the cook, or a bad choice on our part, but the very aroma of it made me queasy. And I was actually suprised that it had an aroma, as there was little flavor to the dish. If you're looking for a good lunch spot, look somewhere else. Pros: Coffee, Ambiance, Breakfast Cons: Slightly Overpriced, Lunch more

In friendly Edmonds 3/27/2004

The 4 course dinner specials are good value - delicous tomato bisque, flavorful salad choices, entree variety and dessert - we had a bit bland tiramisu. Definately worth trying if you have Entertainment/promo offer. I'm lukewarm about this place but before the final verdict is in would like to try breakfast or lunch. For added adventure or romance to your outing, take the Edmonds/Kingston ferry as walk-ons (currently under $6 for adults) - only 3 blocks away. Pros: Entertainment 2004, warm & friendly more

The Toast of Edmonds 8/3/2002

Chanterelle is a ""must-visit"" for all who love quaint dining. The service is excellent and the food is always prepared fresh and full of flavor. The 5 course dinner is a guaranteed hit. If you want to impress your date recommend Chanterelle's!! Pros: Delicious, Desserts, Variety Cons: Parking, Limited Seating, not good for kids more
