Always a good time and good food 9/22/2010

Whenever we head to Austin for "fine dining" and our disappointed we redeem the trip by going to the Cedar Door. The staff is always fun and attentive and the food is never a disappontment. The patio is great too. more

Nice patio lousy waiter 5/10/2010

went here recently for happy hour because we were drawn to their beautiful patio. left disappointed because they weren't offering any happy hour specials, the waiter was rude (gave us attitude about wiping down the table) and not attentive ( they were slow that night but he was always hard to find). the queso more

The place for Mexican Martinis! 5/17/2009

I love this place. Every time I come to Austin I go to the Cedar Door - their Mexican Martinis are amazing. They're are a little spendy, but totally worth it. So tasty on a hot Texas day! Their food is good too, nothing too fancy but excellent pub grub/bar type food (nachos, burgers, etc.) The drinks and nice outside seating make it all totally worthwhile. Service has always been quick and friendly even when happy-hour busy. I just wish they were open at lunchtime during the week! Pros: mexican martinis, deck, downtown Cons: not open for lunch, hours strange? more

Worst Service Ever 1/27/2009

Went to Cedar Door with a friend. We both had a long history going to there. We asked for Nachos which took over an hour to get. When we refused them, the waitress got an attitude and demanded a tip. This is worst service I have ever gotten in my life. The excuse why the food too long? Their kitchen is too small and they didn't have enough staff. We were still expected to pay for our Margaritas, which were too expensive. When I called to talk to the manager, they hung up on me! I used to love going to this place. Unfortunately, they don't seem to care about their customers. Cons: Bad service, overpriced drinks, wait for food way too long more

Best Experience in Austin 9/6/2007

I went to Cedar Door with a large group of friends for a birthday. I'd been to Cedar Door a few years ago and was impressed by the wonderful service. Our server Nichole? was an absolute joy and was very helpful (definitely try the Mexican martinis). The bar was a little busy and crowded, but the atmosphere is great- very down to earth and fun, not at all pretentious like some places. The food was ok, but there are a lot more pro's than con's. Highly recommended for it's charm and great crowd.! Pros: service, atmosphere, parking and Mexican martini's Cons: food menu could use more healthy items more

Great porch 11/13/2005

Went to the Cedar Door with a group of co-workers and sat on the porch. Fun crowd, good service and excellent drinks. A peer raved about the "mexican martini." Check it out. more

Austin's Favorite Spot 1/30/2005

The Mexican Martini is the same great recipe as the other location. I've been out of Austin for several years and was so happy to find this place still alive and looking and feeling the same!! Austin has changed so much but the Door has remained the same great neighborhood bar it has been for decades. Pros: staff, inexpensive, parking more

Best Mexican Martinis 10/12/2003

The absolute best. Fresh squeezed lime and the best tequila. You can't beat them! Pros: great crowd, no mix - all fresh more

Better Thing 6/27/2003

Strong drinks at cheap prices. Service is great but most of the time the place is too busy for excellent service. Try the Mexican Martini, the best in Austin. The deck is awesome too. Pros: friendly, location, parking more

The Rocks 6/21/2003

First time in at the new location. All good if not better than prevous location. Same great drinks and laid back atmosphere. A must see if you're tired of the same old clubs. Pros: parking, tradition more

New district 6/3/2003

We had a great time at the Cedar Door before and after dinner at Roy's. The Mexican's are always great and the atmosphere is more sophisticated than the Warehouse distrcit. Maybe someone should tell the guys that the women to guy ratio is 5 to 1. That's probably why the hang out at the Door! Pros: nice people, parking, Mexican Martini more

Old favorite 4/17/2003

The Cedar Door remains a cool place to hang regardless of time. So many new trendy places that come and go but this Austin favorite has staying power. It's a simple, laid back joint that has more charm than any new bar could possibly duplicate. Pros: prices, staff, deck more

Nice Improvement 4/10/2003

First time out to the new location. The deck is HUGE and the drinks are still affordable. The beer garden is great if want to get away from the crowd in front. Pros: parking, Mexicans more

New Mexican Price 3/21/2003

Had a great time, again, at the Door. Noticed they have new drink specials during the week and they lowered the price of the Mexican. Plenty of parking considering the place was packed. Bathrooms are bigger and cleaner than previous location. Pros: parking, specials, staff more

Great Drink Specials 3/19/2003

Stopped in and noticed new drink specials from Sunday to Thursday. $2 Drafts on Tuesday and $3.00 wells on Thursday. This is great for those of us laid off from local law firms! They have a new house mexican for $7.50. Not bad but we still like the original. Pros: New drink specials, Scene, Parking more

Big Deck and Bigger Drinks 3/18/2003

These folks have done a wonderful job improving the Door while keeping its charm and character. Good luck and thanks for keeping this landmark open! Pros: Mexican Martini, Parking, Owners more

  • Although it's seen many locations, Cedar Door has been a beloved Austin spot for over 30 years. Now situated on the ever-so energetic 4th Street, it sports an expansive happy-hour deck and a beer garden. Local office workers pour out of the buildings nearby to soak up the conversation and standard pub decor. This self-proclaimed home of the Original Mexican Martini certainly makes its argument well by using the smoothest tequilas. The favorite house shot is the Red Snapper--bourbon-based, with amaretto and cranberry. Recently introduced is Live Band Karaoke and Pint Night, where specials reign and patrons try their hand at showcasing their set of pipes!
