Best

The restaraunt food was great and I am planning to go again. Pros: Good location Cons: Needs alittle remodeling

Worst

This is the place to go if you have to pick up the check for Aunt Doris, etc., not for great food! Pros: cheap, family-style Cons: too noisy, mediocre food

Family Style Eating 10/27/2005

My wife and I went there for dinner and the food was fantastic. The prices vary ($20+)but each dinner may feed 2-6 people. We shared the Carmine's Salad which was delicious, and ordered Chicken Cutlet Parm along with Shrimp Parm. and needless to say we took home a doggy bag. If you want pasta under your entree it will cost you additional money but the portion size is huge. Good desserts. Great value, great food, service was good. Reservations a must. If you're going after 4PM you may have a long wait, but well worth it. more

food was average, too much garlic and way over-priced.portions are big but not for the price your payimg. Cons: too much garlic, over-priced more

Ginormous portions, good service. 9/2/2005

Its big, its Italian, and the prices are nice. So whats wrong with Carmine's? Its the salt, it can also be the service, but still worth the visit if you have 10 people who are starving and don't mind family style carbs for cheap. Make sure you don't have acid reflux before dining in this theater district Italian haven. Pros: Huge Portions, Group Dining, Service Cons: Bland Taste, Noisy more

Huge Portions & Delicious 6/23/2005

Went recently based on an internet recommendation for best spaghetti & meatballs. I ate at the bar and it was delicious food and friendly people. Only thing is, each dish serves 3-4, even appetizers, so you must take it home. Not designed for solo travelers who don't have a fridge. Otherwise, highly recommend the quality of food for the money. Pros: price for quantity, service, delicious Cons: must take to go, massive servings, busy & waiting list more

Fantastic! 6/21/2005

If you have someone coming in from out of town who loves Italian food, this is the place to go. I brought my girlfriend's family here and they just loved it. Huge portions of delcious food, loaded in garlic. And don't forget the Titantic before you leave - there is nothing quite like ending a huge meal with a flourless chocolate cake. Very friendly and patient waitstaff. Just make sure you make reservations, or you'll never get in. more

just because the portions are big, doesn't mean the food is good. Gave it two tries, will never go again. more

Food is great! Very large portions-best with a large group. Will only take Saturday reservations with a large group. Meals are served family-style: difficult for couples to order. more

Great food in a lively atmosphere 4/25/2005

Carmine's is probably one of those love it or hate it places. I find it to be a very good example of a restaurant that doesn't pretend to be something it's not. There are certainly much worse places to eat "great" Italian food in the Midtown area. The food is great. You will see many items you are familiar with like lasagna, ravioli, and manicotti. The sauces are very rich and delicious. As many people state, the portions are amazingly huge. Two entrees for a party of four is plenty. The selection is large. The atmosphere is so-so. It's a massive, open room with closely-packed tables. It can get quite loud during the dinner rush, but not annoyingly so. It's not a great place for a romantic dinner, but families and groups of people out to have a good time will certainly find it enjoyable. Pros: Rich, delicious sauce, Great selection, Familiar foods Cons: Long waits after 6PM, Can be loud at times more

Great food, great for groups 3/21/2005

This place is so warm and festive. Portions are huge and everything is delicious. Get the chicken pasta and save room for the huge desserts. Everything can be shared and you will definitely be full. Prices are reasonable as well. more

LOVE Carmine's! 1/7/2005

We have never had a bad experience at Carmine's- only good food, excellent service and a lot of fun. Carmine's is boisterous and friendly, and a family of five can eat there for under $80.00. Considering that you can easily spend that much at TGI Fridays and have a miserable dining experience, Carmine's comes very higly recommended. The wait staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. You should definitely make a reservation well in advance or be prepared to wait for an hour, but the bar area is friendly, and we have always been seated within the estimated wait time. Carmine's is great for families and groups . Pros: good food, excellent service, great for families more

Tourist Trap 9/13/2004

After hearing New Yorkers rave for years about this NYC tourist trap I finally had to see for myself if it could truly live up to all the hype. Well it doesn't. The food was mediocre at best, in fact the pasta dish was so over salted that we couldn't even eat it. If you want truly amazing Italian try Pheasant or Petrosino and save the tourist trap for the tourists. Cons: , portions to large more

Excellent Food! 7/23/2004

My wife & I went to Carmine's Midtown after a 8pm Broadway show. Even at 11pm or so the place was packed. The service was simply average, but the food was tremendous! The fact the food was superior and terrific allowed us to forget the service issues(waited for water, served wine in a small non-wine glass)! It was noisy, but that did not bother us. Pros: FOOD!!!, LOCATION!, Good dinner late-nite Cons: , Close together tables more

Go elsewhere! 5/3/2004

There are much better places to go all over the city than this tourist trap that has gone downhill over the years! Good if you have alot of people to feed because of big portions but the food has gotten bland, the service rude and just not worth the wait when they are busy! Check on citysearch for much better places! Pros: big portions, good for crowds Cons: , rude staff, long waits more

Cold Food, Cold Service 3/28/2004

We dined at Carmines Post-show. We waited 20 mins for a table in the pleasant bar area. Once seated we were greeted by a very rude waiter who threw menus at us and then snatched them away as we were ordering. Food portions are huge fine if everyone wants to eat the same thing - but not much good otherwise or if only 2 of you. All the food arrived luke-warm and tasted bland. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. Can't recommend strongly enough NOT to go there! Pros: Large Bar area Cons: , Cold Food, Tasteless food more

As close to Italian, as US is to Italy 3/18/2004

There is nothing Italian about the food. Tomato sauce that has barely been cooked and tastes more like ketchup than anything else. Huge portions that would never be found in Italy. Slathered garlic--a profound lack of salt--overcooked pasta. There is nothing of the simplicity or elegance of Italian cooking. This is, at best, very mediocre Italo-American food--not any better than the Olive Garden and more money. For a bad meal, go here. For Italian food, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Pros: big groups can fit Cons: , Family Style, atmosphere more

Go just to say you've been there 9/23/2003

Carmines has good "Americanized" Italian food (ie, don't go there if you're looking for authentic - go to The Original Vincent's in Little Italy if you want GREAT Italian food!!!) and the portions are large enough to feed a family of four, or a couple with lots left over. The place is always crowded and even at 10:30 you'll have to wait for a table. If you've ever been to Maggianos (another Italian chain) or Bucca di Beppo, Carmine's is very similar in both atmosphere and food. Go once to say you've been there, then head to Little Italy for the real thing. Pros: Large portions, Good food Cons: Crowded, Not exactly friendly more

RUDEST STAFF IN NYC 9/13/2003

I'm a native new yorker and have gone to many great Italian restaurants throughout the city, but this was NOT one of them! Even though we had reservations, we still had to wait 40 minutes to get seated. Then waited another 15 minutes for the waiter to take our order. After I placed my order, the waiter turned to my boyfriend & made a joke about not having pork fried rice. My boyfriend is chinese and it was completely uncalled for! Then while ordering wine, the waiter kept trying to correct my boyfriend's Italian even though he is FLUENT in Italian! It took 45 minutes for them to bring out our food which was bland and barely warm! Plus,t they kept rushing us. Needless to say, I did NOT leave a tip! Not one cent. If you want great service, good food, a friendly environment, and respect--go to Little Italy. Pros: In theater district Cons: Food, Service, price more

Good Value, and quality food. The bread was out of this world. The four pasta entree should not be missed. more

Go to Sardi's 8/11/2003

My wife and I tried to make reservations at 5:30 as we had a 8:00 show to attend just a few doors down at the St. James. We were told that there were no tables available at that time but to come in at 5:45 and they would see what they could do. We showed up at the restaurant and were rudely told that they could not guarantee us a table before 8:00. We left and walked down to Sardi's and had a wonderful experience. Do yourself a favor. Skip Carmine's and go to Sardi's. Cons: Rude Hosts, Overcrowded more

  • This traditional Italian restaurant near Times Square is on every tourist's to-do list. Decorated with spotlighted portraits and black-and-white photographs, the massive main dining room holds multitudes--but you'll still line up for an hour or more without a reservation. Large groups here for a celebration will love the raucous atmosphere; those in search of quiet conversation will hate it. Despite the hubbub, service is cheerful and efficient. Count on going home with a doggy bag: The enormous portions are sized for three to four people, which makes for great value but much negotiation, especially if you're a couple. All the garlic-saturated dishes come on strong with robust flavors. Rich sauces make pastas a good bet, but chicken marsala and salmon special are middle-of-the-road and veal is rather ropey. After all the heat, strawberry shortcake with whipped cream makes for a cool, refreshing dessert.
