Four of us had lunch at Moutarde last week - there were two other tables, two other tables. We ordered one crepe, two omelet dishes and one salad; it took one hour to get our food. Worst. Service. Ever. 6/25/2005

Since moving to the neighborhood over a year ago, this easily the worst service I have experienced in the Slope/Heights/Cobble Hill/Brooklyn Heights area. On my first visit, we walked out after waiting for ten minutes with no sign of a maitre'd. Chancing fate again on a second visit, we waited for close to ten minutes, again with no sign of a maitre'd, though we were eventually seated by a server. Once seated, we were treated to an epic wait before a server appeared, followed by bungled orders, delayed food, and a room that seems to be designed to be as loud and uncomfortable as possible. In fairness, once the food arrived, it was uniformly excellent, but there are other places to go in the area for food just as good, with service that matches. Cons: service, service, service more

Service here is lacking 5/11/2005

My husband and I have visited this restaurant many many times, as the food is good, but since the service is so terrible we will not go again. One evening we had out of town guests with us, who have just arrived after a long trip. And it took over 2 hours to get our meals. Other tables came and went while we were still waiting on salads. When the manager was asked for things did imporve but 2 hours to get our meal.... not good. Pros: Food Cons: Service more

Surprised by the Service 5/8/2005

After reading the very good and very critical reviews on line of Moutarde, were very surprised at how good the service was on a Mother's Day. The restaurant was packed but the service was quite fast, with no pressure to free up tables, and very friendly. Prices were reasonable, certainly comparable to other bistros in NYC and to upscale restaurants in Brooklyn. The menu was interesting and varied and the food was ok if not great. The house wine was drinkable and the appetizers and desserts quite good. Servings were generous. My only complaint was the noise. When the restaurant is full the noise level is quite high. Moutarde is a cute place with great food. The service is friendly, though, it can be a little slow. However, one great thing is that they'll never rush you. I had dinner there last night and sat there eating, drinking, and reading for 2 hours without any rush. Their wine is good and the food is solid. The steak frites are great, so many fries that you can't even finish it. Not a good date place, as is can get loud and is quite bright, but a good place for a solo meal or nice meal among friends. Perfect Brunch 10/24/2004

Where could I start? This place has such aweful service, I will NEVER eat here again. The so-called manager was absolutely rude and un-accommodating. The food is sub-par at best, a mediocre wine list. After numerous mistakes in the orders and by the wait-staff, no applogies... just a smug attitude by the rude manager/ownder (or whatever the heck he is... those of you who were unfortunate enough to go there know whom I speak of). Nice Brunch 2/5/2004

I've only been to Moutarde once, for brunch, and I had a thoroughly pleasant experience. The service was attentive, professional, and friendly. The food was very good, although I admit that the brunch menu was not very adventurous. Our waiter brought us a basket of croissants hot from the oven which were melt-in-your mouth delicious. The decor was very faux authentic, down to the zinc bar, and reminded me of a brasserie in Paris that I used to visit often. Everyone in our group vowed to return another day. Stylish Bar 1/26/2004

Moutarde passes for more than an eatery. Outside of the flavorful cuisine and comfortable seating area there is a stylish bar upfront that provides refuge from the cold, especially if you like Hot Apple Cider. more

I went on a Sunday night and it was quiet...I thought the quality of the food was good. Overall I thought the service was good, the price was right although the decor was a little over the top. The pannacotta was a real gem, the server offered great wine advice, and we never felt rushed. However, sometimes the ""mustard"" in every dish wasn't at subtle or as well incorporated as I would've expected, the espresso tasted of burnt coffee beans and the hanger steak was medium but with a charred outside. Bad Service/Good Brunch 10/26/2003

I've had brunch at Moutarde twice and both times my egg dishes (Benedict, Wild Mushroom Omelet) were almost perfectly prepared. The price is right too, all egg dishes were under $10. But then there's the sluggish and absentminded service: twice someone tried to serve us something for another table and it took a long time to get our check. The regular coffee was dreadful. And I understand that restaurants need to charge $2.50 for a coke, but another $2.50 for a refill is nearly a crime. We all also agreed that the decor is way too themed, it feels so fake, like you're in Disneyland or something; the space could definitely use some streamlinening. French Dining at its...Frenchest 10/4/2003

I walked into this place late on a Friday night. They looked like they were about to close. A rude Frenchman (why I'd never!) did not discharge his duties properly, making no attempts to accomodate us and grudgingly checking if the kitchen was still open. The wine selection was okay, but subpar for a French bistro. I had the tuna steak, which was nice but nothing to write home about. I would probably not eat here again. Don't really understand all the reviewers whining about service--I've been to Moutarde a number of times and have never found it anything but charming. I guess they're more friendly and welcoming than obseqious and ""proper,"" so if you want to be fawned over by uptight drones go elsewhere, but if you're looking for a comfortable, down-to-earth, neighborhood bistro, Moutarde is a great choice. more

Eat anywhere else! 9/14/2003

I've tried Moutarde several times and it has gotten worse each time. Last night was my last time. We waited over an hour and 10 minutes for our entrees. No explanations or apologies, actually no one stopped by our table at all in this time. We had empty beer and wine glasses in front of us. They always forget your order here. I waited over 35 minutes for a salad and only got it after chasing the waiter down to ask him about it. The manager obviously does not care, he wanders around looking spaced out. I told him there was a problem and he said ""okay"" and walked away. Being a snotty french guy, does not a manager make! Please get new management here, and I would come again. Too bad about the SERVICE... 9/8/2003

After moving to the neighborhood, my girlfriend and I decided to try out Moutarde. After not opening the doors on time and seating ourselves after the doors were opened we started with dinner. Our server was snotty when asked questions. When asked what wines were served by the glass, she simply told us the varietals and not the producers. Apps took 35 minutes. Entrees were mediocre and she never came back to check on us. We were the second table in! We watched the staffs take shots at the bars while we choked for water! Moutarde was I said was, when they open the staff was great specially 2 brothers working there. Since mid may all changed :new staff we do not come back quite often now. The food is good but the ambiance is not the same. Can someone tell us what happend with the 2 brothers, they where fun, pros and made our days each time we where going there Pros: good value, food is good, pretty place Cons: desserts not great, new staff no charisma more

Good food, long wait 6/24/2003

I was worried about visiting Moutarde because it looked so trendy and I don't like what's happening to my street (witness monstrosities like Bibi and La Villa down the block) but I gave it a shot a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. My salmon was fantastic, as was the skate and the warm chocolate cake. My only complaint was that when I tried to go back with some friends on a crowded night, the place was packed, yet they told us there was a ""20 minute wait"" and that we should wait at the bar. Needless to say, it was not a 20 minute wait. Why not have a reservations policy, or at least be honest like Al Di La is (if it's 2 hours, they tell you).
