eww 3/7/2008

Layal's manager kicked me out for offering him $20 to find me a better table after he kept repeating to sit my 4 friends and I a table in the very back with one broken chair, at the same time he had several tables that seated 4 open with no one sitting in them. I nevertheless will never go here again. Pros: none Cons: bad attitude ethnocentric manager? more

i ve been to cafe layal several times ever since it has been open and have always thought the atmosphere was amazing and very unique... I went last week though and i was very impressed to say the least! the service improved dramaticly . and on top of that they had a new menue that is out of this world! my friend ate a shawarma that i tried and loved! i decided to try a burger that they seemed new to the menue... and all I have to say is that it is the best burger in town! I think that I have found my new lunch spot! more

Interesting place 4/15/2007

Well as far as hookah places go, this would probably be among the best for that. Definetly beats Ranoush hands down. I dont understand why it took so long to have a place like this in Houston. It has a nice atmosphere and the crowd is interesting. Food is ok and could be better ( can't say it's real authentic middle eastern, for that I recommend Dimassi's which is also on Richmond) but the prices are not too expensive. My main issue with the place is service. It takes way too long for the servers to come and attend to your needs at times and that happens even when the place is not too busy. And once you get served they rarely come back and check on you like they are supposed to, at times I have to get up and ask for some service! That really bothers me and for people who rely on tips is kinda strange! But until somone comes up with a better hookah place it will have to be Layal for now. I have not tried the live entertainment, but I think i will just to see what it's like. Overall I would recommend trying it at least once. Pros: Ambience, crowd, music Cons: Service more

Pros: vallet, sweets, food intertainment Cons: sometimes needs reservations more

an Okay Place 1/25/2007

I went there few times already and the food is not amazing, more like an OKAY middle eastern food. This is coming from a Middle eastern person herself. The few times I've been there, people who work there were mean and the service was VERY slow. Two of the times, we were asked to leave our tables after we sat explaining that the owner kids are coming, this is after we asked if we could sit there and they said it was ok. The belly dancers they had one night need to take ALOT of dancing classes. Music is good though. Bad service, Okay food, Okay music, bad dancers; then why do we keep going? They have one of the best Hookah in town. It's always crowded and packed with Middle eastern/paki people. So if you want to be where the crowd is, then Cafe Layal is the place to be; althought most of the people there are teenagers. If you go there, double check your recipte before you leave. My friends once left cash and 2 credit cards and asked the server to split the check. Days laters, they discoverd she kept all the cash for herself and charged both credit cards with the full amount. Pros: A place to see and be seen Cons: Bad service, always crowded and OK food more

A full Mediterranean 1/21/2007

Layal is a full Mediterranean restaurant with beautiful interior and both indoor patio with ceiling fans and an outdoor patio. If you like to smoke the Hooka (Shisha) Layal is the best place to offer differnt flaivors of it. Thier menu include Kebob: Chicken, lamb or beef, Falafel Grape Leaves and Dips (Hummus, Babaganouj). Some times it get too crawded. Pros: When it's good, it's really, really good Cons: sometimes it get very crowded more

Interesting Place 7/18/2006

Cafe Layal is by far the best place to smoke a hookah. The patio is huge with a nice open air feel. The restaurant is nice; it has a nice middle eastern feel, and is clean. The best nights to go are wednesday, and especially sunday. Valet service is provided on those nights, and all the hot cars are shown off in the front spots. The crowd is always friendly, but if your not Arabic, youll probably get some looks. Ive been numerous times with friends, and the last time I was there, I was the only white guy out of a crowd of maybe 200. Great music (if you like authentic, live arabic music), and interesting servers (look for Irina) make this place a lot of fun on a sunday evening. Pros: Very Good Hookah, Great ambiance, Nice music Cons: Not a diverse crowd, Waitresses insane more
