Worst

Yes the French Toast was good, but not deserving of it's steep price tag. Service was slow, but friendly. Other offerings were nothing special, so the high prices weren't justifie...

Editorial review from Citysearch 12/23/2012

Wow ... I cannot believe some of these negative reviews and think they must be trolls or competitors. My family has been coming to Cafe du Berry for years - it is a well-loved tradition. We each have a favorite breakfast: the incredible custardy french toast, the salmon benedict, the veggie frittata, the scallop and mushroom omelette. Coffee is good and the orange and grapefruit juices are fresh-squeezed. This place is reminiscent of a bistro in Paris with the narrow stairs to the second floor and a light-filled first floor crowded with small tables. The service is pretty good (better than in Paris!) and sometimes when the place is busy it takes a little while to get the food, but hey, the whole reason we come here is to relax and enjoy each other's company and indulge in our favorite food. I have a job this year that keeps me across the country with trips around the world, and every time I come back to Portland I am happy to have the Cafe du Berry to return to. more

BAD SERVICE!!!!!! 12/15/2011

BAD SERVICE!!!!!! Pros: null Cons: null more

good food....really bad service. 6/10/2011

The first time we ate at Cafe Du Berry, my daughter and I waited 30minutes for the waiter (Richie) to take our order, and then waited another 1hr to get our food. I told myself i will never go back here because of the poor service i received. But then, last week my friend talked me into going again, and we did. They have a new waitress (Flor) who not only cannot speak english, but she also does not listen to what your saying. she took our order and came back with the wrong food. We did not complain about it because we did not want to wait another hour to get our food. Then we asked her to get us Lydia the owner, so we can complain about her service and she said she was busy in the back room. It was the worst service ever......now definetely wont be coming back to this place. more

An Uninvited Guest (or many???) 3/19/2011

We have never been, but had always heard such good things. The Spanish omlette was overpriced and underwhelming. Husband's plate had an addition on it that we had not expected: a large black beetle. When we brought this to the server's attention, she exclaimed "That just shows you how fresh our bannans are." What?!? There was no offer to remove the beetle or to replace the order. In fact, the server went on to tell me a story about the infestation of snakes they experienced with a crate of bananas. I was unable to finish my scrambled eggs and lousy salsa that was parading as a Spanish omlette. more

Terrible Food, Polite Staff.....Poor Service 12/5/2010

We love to try new places and just so happened to drive by Cafe Du Berry and thought it would be worth a try. It absolutely was not. We were seated right away but were not asked for our order until about 10 minutes after being seated. We both ordered the signature dish (French Toast) and waited 35 more minutes to get the soggiest, worst piece of French Toast we have ever had. The hashbrown's were a brick of mush that were brutal. more

Good Food but OK service 9/7/2010

So the food here is great, we had absolutely no complaints. (Except for my husband, he ordered the french toast and poor guy was so suprised when 30 mins later we got our food and there was only 1 piece of french toast on his plate!) more

Best French Toast on the Planet! 6/1/2010

I have been a Cafe du Berry fan for 15+ years. Now that I have moved away I treasure it even more. Every visit to PDX is never complete without at least one trip the the doob. Pros: Amazing food, Great Staff Cons: Don't be in a hurry! more

Big build up, bigger letdown 5/19/2010

Do you like being ignored? Do you want your server to be texting and calling friends while your water glass is empty and your food is 40 mins late and your order is incorrect because your server didn't write anything down? If so, then Cafe DB is for you, and no I don't mean Du Berry. WORST. MEAL. EVER. Pros: can't think of one Cons: the service and the food more

A disappointing morning 5/17/2010

It was the first time and the last time I will ever go to this establishment. All three of our food orders were messed up, the waters stayed empty, and the food was poor. Dont bother with the Spanish omlette or the eggs bennedict. the French toast was all right but it cost 11.50 for one piece half a bannana 1 strawberry and a hockey puck for hashbrowns. If your looking for good breakfast keep driving. more

The complainers might prefer Denny's 3/31/2010

I have eaten at Cafe DuBerry at least a couple times a month for the last 15 years and have yet to have a meal that didn't delight me. Having traveled the world that is fairly hard to do. Pros: Julia Child would approve Cons: If you seek an American gut buster you'll be disappointed more

Heavenly french toast! 3/8/2010

The french toast is delicious. I've never tasted anything like it. It's custardy inside and completely wonderful. It's the only thing I've tried there, but if the other dishes are as good, you won't be disappointed. Pros: Delicious french toast Cons: Difficult to find parking more

Best Breakfast in the City!!! 11/28/2009

The best breakfast in the city! I recently went with my husband and two year old. I had the salmon eggs Benedict and my husband the French toast. I also got a fruit bowl for my son. All I can say is delicious. I?ve never had such perfectly cooked Benedict, and the French toast was mouth watering. The staff was so friendly and nice, my coffee cup was never dry! What an amazing Portland find, we will be going back every weekend! Pros: Best Breakfast in the City!!! Cons: None! more

Friends Don?t Let Friends Eat at Caf? DuBerry 9/12/2009

It would even be a mean prank to send your worst enemy there. Located next to a car detail shop, can you say ?Carnauba Wax Soup?? We went there on an advice by a friend (?) and to put it nicely, we were disappointed. Just as the comments below say, it?s crammed. We arrived on a hot day and they have no air conditioning. Their furniture is plastic. There is no view. If the restaurant view was only turned around the corner, at least the bar across the street would have at least provided something possibly appetizing in the worn down neighborhood. It?s supposed to be a French restaurant, yet the only thing I see remotely French is escargot and French toast. Pros: Portland has better to offer Cons: Read on . . . more

Worst Dining Experience Ever 7/19/2009

The only thing French about this place is the terrible customer service and attitude of the staff. Pros: You don't have to eat at Cafe Du Berry after reading this re Cons: Everything more

Horrible 7/17/2009

Cramped Spaces, Shabby and Dirty looking Waiter, Overpriced and Unfulfilling (and believe me I am not a heavy eater) - The Fruit and French toast side has literally not even a handful of berries. I felt so taken advantage of at the end! Not enough food at high enough quality (the hash browns were extremely bland, even with salt and not a good texture. I will say though that the french toast was ok, it was unique, had a custardy inside with a hint of lemon, but was not nearly enough for the price they charge (one piece of bread is all!). Even thinking about it makes me hungry. Pros: Ok french toast Cons: Everything Else more

Worst of the worst 6/10/2009

Most disgusting meal ever more

Amazing Pepper Steak and homemade French onion soup! 1/23/2009

Everything is so rich and so flavorful! The steak melts in your mouth and the French onion soup is like nothing I have ever tasted! My husband and I go here once every other month or so and I always leave full and satisfied! Pros: Homemade food! Cons: I don't have any. more

Nice breakfast place 12/11/2008

This is a wonderful spot for breakfast. A bit small and quaint but located in a great place for those who work on "pill hill". I have taken invited speakers here for breakfast prior to a busy interview day. Really excellent, fresh food and good variety. more

Good breakfast 12/9/2008

Had breakfast there and the food was good - I liked that they served fresh squeezed orange juice. The only drawback is that the service was slow - it took forever to get the food and check. more

Living on past glories? 11/29/2008

My wife and I enjoy going out for breakfast as an occasional treat. We enjoy a variety of different places generally (Jam on Hawthorne, Sandborns, Screen Door). Cafe Du Berry was recommended by friends - I should have been wary when no one seemed to have visited it recently...... Pros: Wide menu, fruit sides Cons: Slow Service, average food, expensive. more
