Best

I have been a Cafe du Berry fan for 15+ years. Now that I have moved away I treasure it even more. Every visit to PDX is never complete without at least one trip the the doob. ...

Worst

Yes the French Toast was good, but not deserving of it's steep price tag. Service was slow, but friendly. Other offerings were nothing special, so the high prices weren't justifie...

The Worst Breakfast in PDX 8/27/2008

This is not Bistro, it is lazy, overpriced, and mediocre food. The two of us had breakfast that totaled $28+4 tip=$32. I had the waffle which was only 2/3s of a waffle w/ a hasbrown toast and seasonal fruit(not enough to be considered a serving-garnish). The waffle was ok but it came w/ the kind of syrup you would expect at some "pancake house" or plastic bottle-yuck! My partner ordered the spanish omelette which were eggs folded over to look nice and neat w/ canned salsa over the top! We also had a side a bacon which were pieces of greasy fat that looked like the commercial Sysco kind; yeah I worked in a diner in SF for 8yrs and a bistro(dinner) and the beaskfast at Cafe Du Berry is embarassing! Intially when I walked into this place it looked dirty, unorganized, and just unpleasant but my partner reaffirmed it was good. $12 and you don't even get a whole waffle, the guy cooking needs to rethink his menu!! Service was good, although there is not much service needed for crappy breakfast and it shows. Pros: none Cons: Overpriced, poor menu more

Good food and service 4/3/2008

I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews here, because this is one of the best breakfast spots in Portland. It's a gem and the food is delicious. \r \r I love their French toast - it is extremely eggy (which is why it is so good) - I think they soak the bread in egg overnight. \r \r Definitely try it for yourself before you believe the negative reviews. more

WORST SERVICE EVER and they're not even remotely French!!! 3/22/2008

I have lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years and STILL try it every 5 years or so. The last time before today a waiter approached me insultingly as if we were drinking buddies, and I am a woman. Pros: NONE Cons: No parking, crappy American service, cafeteria ambience, stiff prices more

worst place ever 3/1/2008

I have been here twice. It is just awful. I wish I hadn't gone back a second time. Pros: you don't have to eat here after reading this review Cons: lousy food, bad service, poor cleanliness, high prices more

Very good food and service 9/29/2007

I've been here only once for a company party and the atmosphere was a little strange - not super nice but not shabby either - but the food was EXCELLENT! I believe it's french cuisine - very rich that's for sure. more

ROBBED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT 8/3/2007

Best deal about this restaurant is THEIR WRITE UP! Ordered the french toast, and it was nothing to crow about except for the high price. For two people it was a very expensive breakfast, and certainly did not merit it. Cramped doesn't even come close to their horrible seating. You barely can move without hitting another fool that believed their hype. I'm guessing all those wonderful reviews were written by friends or family, and I surfing the net in attempts to try new places in town fell for it! Pros: STREET PARKING Cons: EVERYTHING FROM PRICE, SERVICE AND OVERRATED FOOD more

Downright frightening 3/24/2007

What a waste. The food is mediocre and the service is awful as well overpriced. The french toast that Du Berry is "famous" for is far overrated food. Specials never change. Its "custard style" signature dish is just a mushy mess at best and the rest of the menu is simply three eggs in a french fold with a bland sloppy sauce on top. I have sampled many dishes as I was a neighborhood regular, but found all menu items to lack any sort of variance. The wait staff are rude, unorganized and act as thought they don't even have food handlers' licenses. One waiter will berate the customers under his breath--assuming they don't understand the insults in fragmented German he is uttering. I haven't ever seen anyone wash their hands between busing and serving. Money then food are handled without so much as a thought to hand washing. The guy in the pantry brushes his hands though his hair and handles money as he prepares the fruit that garnishes the plates. Dinner items are also so-so and sometimes one will find hair follicles on a plate as a pantry chef present. The flavors all run together as everything is simply drowned in a heavy cream sauce. Pros: none Cons: slow and rude service, long waits, unsanitary and smelly more

Cafe Du Grumpee 1/6/2007

Been to this place twice. Once it was good and once it was awful. That old guy that waits tables should be banished to the kitchen because he is really grumpy (maybe he is just French?). Took 20 minutes to get a refill on coffee. Food is good but kind of expensive for what it is (like...just one piece of toast...are you kidding?). more

Best French Toast in Portland! 1/1/2007

I love the french toast here! It is a big slice of bread, soaked in lemony, eggy batter with butter and powdered sugar on top. It comes with hash browns and fruit too. Although the price may be a little high, I don't think you are able to get this kind of french toast anywhere else in Portland, so it is justified. On the many weekend mornings we have been here, the service has always been fine and we have never had a bad experience, except when people insist on bringing their screaming toddlers to a small, intimate cafe. Seriously, what is up with that? Go to the IHOP people! more

Best Crab Omelet Ever! 11/4/2006

I've only been here for breakfast a few times and I have to say, they have the most amazing, scrumptious omelet I've ever tasted. It is served with several generous hunks of crab leg (out of the shell) and a wonderful mirepois hollandaise. I could eat this every day. It is a pricey dish, but once you've tried it, I think you will agree that it is worth every penny. (FYI, I think they only have the crab omelets on the weekends.) Pros: To-die-for crab omelet Cons: A little pricey more

Overpriced! 3/29/2006

After hearing good things, we checked out this restaurant. For two people, we spent a total of $42 for breakfast! I had the spanish omlette which consisted of eggs with some bland salsa thrown on top. The orange juice was the best part of the meal. Service was ok. With as many wonderful breakfast places in Portland, I would not recommend this place for the money we spent. Pros: orange juice Cons: Overpriced, bland food more

European bistro on a budget 1/16/2006

We were delighted the moment we walked in with the simple decor and friendly ambience. The menu is limited and they also have daily specials. Yesterday's was a shiitake mushroom and scallop omelet that I'll remember as one of the best omelets I've ever had. My wife had their fresh smoked salmon and eggs which she thought was excellent. The lower seating area has about eight tables and has the European feel where you are seated near others but easily feel your own privacy. The staff was very friendly and polite. I think it was the owner and her son while they made sure we had everything we wanted. Their friendly personalities added additional warmth to the simple charm of the dining experience. We look forward to going back and trying a dinner soon and will enjoy recommending this to friends. Pros: Food, Ambience, Staff more

A different French Toast experience 9/4/2005

Being accustomed to the traditional French Toast (American style) usually inclusive of cinnamon and nutmeg swimming in hot maple syrup, I was pleasently surprised to enjoy a different French toast experience @ Cafe du Berry. A crispy outer skin drizzled with a lemony flavored coating dusted with powdered sugar. My take was a more gourmet French toast than your standard diner fare....very tasty but not filling. If you in search of the lumberjack breakfast - go some place else. Service was friendly and attentive..my coffee cup never ran dry! Nice patio outside too! I'll be back! Pros: Friendly staff, great patio more

THE WORST EVER 6/21/2004

This is the worst restaurant that I have ever gone to. The waiter was very rude to the customers and even other employees. It took almost an hour to get our food which was only waffles and French toast. When the food finally arrived, it was extremely disappointing. Pros: None Cons: , Terrible service, Dilapidated building more

two words french toast 4/25/2004

I can't say enough about this place. The waitstaff is great, the french toast is like no other. Coming here is such a treat. Pros: french toast more

Mediocrity 1/24/2004

We had high hopes. Unfortunately, the food was only mediocre. My wife got the French toast, which was ok but not great. With that, she got a few grapes, a bit of banana, and a bit of hash browns. She is only 125 lbs., but left hungry. My omelet was edible, but sub-par compared with other breakfast places around town. The wait-staff was stretched way too thin! We waited over half an hour for our food. I noticed on a table near us a plate with burned waffles that had actually been served to the customer! Pros: Got seated quickly Cons: Waited for meal, Food quality, Price/serving size more

Divine 8/30/2003

A treasure of a restaurant. Wait staff are courterous and genuinely friendly. The atmosphere is inviting, pleasant and comfortable. Menu choices rarely change and the freshness and quality of the food are obviously top priority. Prices may seem a bit on the spendy side, but well worth the money as only the finest ingredients are prepared with painstaking attention to bringing out the rich flavor of their signature dishes. Pros: Fabulous food, friendly staff, good for groups Cons: street parking more

Awful! 5/16/2003

This place is terrible. I write this only to spare you the experience we had on a Saturday morning. We must have waited for over an hour to get an Eggs Benedict that was not even cooked, the meat was a funny color, and the hollandaise was frightening. Don't make the same mistake we did! more

Overrated 11/14/2002

Yes the French Toast was good, but not deserving of it's steep price tag. Service was slow, but friendly. Other offerings were nothing special, so the high prices weren't justified. more

Best Breakfast in PDX! 9/9/2002

My wife kept trying to get me to go to this place for their French Toast. French Toast? How good could it be that it would be worth making the trip? I'll tell you: It was completely worth it. This place makes French toast like fine dining restaurants make creme brulee. It is sinfully good to eat for breakfast. Being a fan of the savory, I tried Eggs Benedict and omelets on subsequent visits. They were equally good. The omelets are made in the true French style: light, airy, and just barely cooked. I could not believe that Cafe du Barry didn't make the cut for best breakfast PDX. Now, I'll be the first to admit that the place is a dive and desperately needs a remodel, but when I go out to eat, it's all about food quality and value, and Cafe du Berry delivers both. Pros: Great French Toast, Awesome Omelets, Funky Atmosphere Cons: Needs Remodel, Crummy Chairs, Crampt Quarters more
