I still can't figure out the hype. I'm a huge fan of international cuisines ranging from Russian to Cambodian, but do not enjoy the food here. I don't know if it's Burmese food in...

The ultimate comfort food 7/20/2006

This is one of my top ten all-time favorites. The wait can be horrific, but it is well worth your time once you sit down. Servers, although incredibly busy, are warm and wonderful, and they really know their menu. My usual ordering routine goes something like:\r Burma Cooler (Beer, lemon, and ginger)\r Tea Leaf Salad (Earthy, spicy, and full of texture)\r Samusa Soup (Spicy, rich, crunchy... my number one craving on a bad day. And I still have no idea how something this rich could possibly be vegetarian!)\r Coconut rice (Rice with a creamy taste and aroma)\r Pumpkin shrimp (To DIE for)\r Chicken Cardamom Casserole (Chicken, shrimp, and rice cooked with cinnamon, cardamom, raisins and almonds. Absolutely soothing)\r \r This place is not for you if you expect to be treated like the center of the universe. But for great food at a good price, Burma Superstar is king! more

Restaurant Superstar 7/20/2006

I'd been hearing rave reviews from friends, and I finally managed to make it over to Burma Superstar. This was a great introduction to Burmese food. Service was excellent, and the prices were very affordable for lunch. more

Wonderful 6/2/2006

This place is a neighborhood treasure. The food is delicious and the staff is helpful. The only short coming of this restaurant is the ambiance. But seriously, this is some of the best food the city has to offer. more

Best food ever...seriously! 5/27/2006

There are no words to describe how good this place is. It has by FAR the best food I've ever eaten. Get the tea leaf salad (amazing). Drink a mango smoothy or a ginger lemonade. Have some coconut rice. Get samosas, or even the samosa soup...to die for. About the notorious wait, it's true. But like people say, put your name in before you go, or go across the street and get some coffee or drinks, and set your mobile phone on high. Wait it out--it's worth it. As for the service, the place is busy as heck, so they run their tails off. But if you need something, like a refill, and bring it to their attention, they will hustle to get it for you. They are the sweetest friendliest people you could meet--it's part of Burmese culture. Pros: Best food ever!, Reasonable prices, Best food EVER! Cons: LONG wait, Only one location, Very small/cramped more

Not all it used to be 4/22/2006

Everybody knows about the infamous wait. A couple years ago, the wait was worth every second, with interesting and excellent food offerings. Lately, the preparation of the dishes has come across as being only average. The service has been spotty, with a lengthy wait before ordering, and dinner dishes arriving over a 10 minute period rather than all at once. The fame and reputation showered upon Burma Superstar was once entirely deserved. Lately, it's shine has faded. Pros: interesting cuisine, affordable Cons: crowded, long waits, spotty service more

Can you say over-rated? 3/18/2006

This place is extremely yuppie and overpriced for the food they serve. We had the Rainbow salad and it had a very strong taste of burnt shallots. The vegetable curry was horrible and bitter. We also ordered coconut rice for our curry and only after the cury cam to the table did our server tell, us they did not have any cocont rice today. This was a huge disappointment... Pros: beer Cons: bitter, burnt, bad service more

Highly Recommended 12/22/2005

Whenever I go to the Richmond, I always eat at Burma Superstar. I'm sure there are other good restaurants nearby, but I always end up at Burma because it's the perfect intimate neighborhood restaurant with wonderful dishes that are hard to find elsewhere. As a vegetarian I find the Superstar noodles, sauteed pea shoots with garlic, tea leaf salad, coconut rice, and samusas to be delicious beyond words. Ginger lemonade and sangria are very tasty. Yes, the service can be slow at times but the staff is consistently gracious. On nights when it's really packed, you'll wait a long time for a table. If you have a cell phone, leave your number on the list and go get a drink at one of the local bars. It's really worth the wait. Or check this restaurant out during off-hours when it's not crowded. more

Pretty good food but service a bit weak 11/30/2005

I took my sister on a wed night at about 8 and we barely wiated 5 minutes to get a table. The food arrived pretty quickly and was quite good. We ordered a shrimp dish, fiery chicken with tofu and okra and egg curry. The okra and egg curry was not what we expected but the shrimp and chicken was good and had the right amount of spiciness. The only thing we were a bit disappointed with was the level of attention. We thought they could have come by to check in on how we were doing or fill our water before we drank it dry. The service was not poor but could be improved a little. I'd go back. Pros: Good food Cons: Service more

AMAZING 11/3/2005

the wait is INTENSE but totally worth it. if you show up and there is a massive list, just put down your name and hit the nearest bar, the staff will call you when your table's ready. the food is absoluting AMAZING! i highly suggest the tea leaf salad (you can't get this dish ANYWHERE else) as well as the spicy chicken with basil (DELICIOUS) EVERY DISH i've had there i have loved. and please save room for dessert. The coconut custard (like deep fried coconut egg rolls) topped w/ coconut ice cream is out of this world. and the staff is wonderful. after just my 3rd visit they knew me well enough for all of them to come and say hello, as well as bring me and my guest a free dessert. it's a definite ""must go"" if you are anywhere near the richmond district. Pros: FOOD, DRINKS, STAFF Cons: Wait time more

Great food and great value 10/22/2005

I mean, really. Even after all the really good ratings here, some people just feel the need to take an opposing view. Dude: did you REALLY wait 20 minutes for your entre to be cleared and another 20 minutes to get your bill? Would anyone really wait 40 minutes to get out of a restaurant? Seriously. Yes, there is in fact a long wait to get in this place - that's because it has great food for a good price. Bland? Truly, I've been to this place probably 5 times over the last year and the food is anything but ""bland"". No, I'm not a restaurant employee or part owner. It's just that even with all the options on Clement, of which there are many, this place is a real gem. Pros: interesting menu, tasty food, good prices Cons: always a wait, because of the 'pros" more

BEWARE...overrated 8/19/2005

If customer service is important to you AVOID this restaurant. In the numerous times I have frequented this venue, I have yet to receive one good customer service experience. In my opinion, regardless of how great the food at a particular restaurant is, when service is poor you will leave with a sour taste in your mouth. Long waits for a table, LONG wait for food -- be prepared to occasionally have the waitress forget your order if you call in to go. Cons: no parking, horrible service, long wait more

Why are people ranting about this place????? 8/4/2005

I admittedly know very little about Burmese food but have had a interest in exploring since Burma Super Star seems to be everyones favorite local restaurant. Having dined there last night I can honestly say I have no interest in further exploring the ""art"" of Burmese cuisine and seriously considering severing any relationship I have with those individuals who sent me there. The food is entirely bland and can be easily found at any corner chinese take out establishment. If you think the wait to get in is bad, try waiting over twenty minutes to have your entrees cleared after you finish and another 20 for the bill. If you choose to have beer or wine, order at least 2 or 3 for yourself when you first sit down since you wont see the waitress again for 40-60 mins. Dont believe the hype. BEWARE THOSE WHO RECOMMEND BURMA SUPER STAR! more

loooooOOOnnNNNggg wait...but worth it. 7/25/2005

my boyfriend went there with a group of co-workers on thursday, loved the place and convinced me to go there again on saturday. placed was already packed when we arrived at 7pm and we waited over an hour to get in. ordered rainbow salad, superstar noodles, pea leaves, curry shrimp, a bottle or chard, and coconut custard for dessert. needless to say, the food was wonderful and i would be happy to get in line to try other dishes tomorrow. oh, if you are a prima donna, dont bother going there... the restaurant is somewhat a hole in the wall; service is efficient, but they were way too busy to attend to my prima donna needs. Pros: yummy food, non pretentious, friendly crowd Cons: long wait, very very long wait, crowded more

Absolutely wonderful flavor and value 7/25/2005

A friend took us to this place... all the raves and the wait (40 minutes, Sunday night) were completely justified. By the time we got our table, we were starving so the three of us ordered a lot of dishes (rainbow salad, mu shu veg wraps, samusa soup, shrimp curry, coconut rice, sauteed pea shoots w/garlic, a caramelized spare rib dish). Everything was amazingly good, especially the rainbow salad - such a delicate balance of flavors! We wanted the tea leaf salad but they were out and recommended this instead. Service was friendly and efficient; and you can't beat the place for value. I definitely plan to return - wish I still lived in SF! Pros: inexpensive, unique, healthy Cons: wait more

Horribly overrated 7/21/2005

Another restaurant that thrives on rep - an undeserved one. It's a local place, no frills, no nothing. The food is impossibly average - full of grease and lacking in flavor. As someone health-conscious, this is not the place for me. Seriously underwhelming experience. The hype is bad for this place. Lackluster food at moderate prices is nothing to rave about, my friends. Pros: location Cons: food more

Not the real thing 7/12/2005

I've had a lot of Burmese food in Malaysia and from Burmese friends. First they've adapted the seasoning for the American palate. The samosa soup was very watery, the samosas tasted strange. The portions on the duck noodles weren't worth it. The portions are way too small. I can understand and the table situation too crowded. If you are trying Burmese food for the first time, this is a good place to get your feet wet. But there's a whole lot to Burmese food than this. more

Absolutely delicious 6/9/2005

I went here a few months ago for the first time and, I have to say, this place is absolutely wonderful! Everything we tried was tasty and some items were reminiscent of filipino food as well as other obvious asian influences. The coconut rice (I think that's what it was...it's been a while) was delicious, with a slight nutty flavor. We tried several dishes, and they were all wonderful and extremely satisfying. For dessert, I decided to try something different from the fried banana with coconut ice cream, so I went with the coconut custard (again, I'm not sure if I'm naming it right) which turned out to be just OK. The restaurant is small and very busy, especially on Saturday evenings, and they no longer take reservations for larger parties (I was just informed by them today) so expect a considerable wait. Still, this place is worth the wait! Pros: food, staff , reasonably priced Cons: the wait, parking more

good food, horrendous service 4/20/2005

we waited for almost two hours to get in, while the waitress seated others ahead of us in what appeared to be a completely random and chaotic order. it was freezing outside, and by the time we got in she had to add chairs to a two-person table in front of the door. the food was good (above average but not outstanding) but the ambiance and service were simply not worth it. definitely not good for a romantic date or for large groups. it might be ok during the week at off hours... Pros: decent food Cons: worst service ever, no parking, poor ambiance more

Too little of a good thing 4/3/2005

Burma Superstar is one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants, especially since I can walk there & not deal with the horrendous parking. I love the ginger lemonade, coconut rice and super star noodles. It is a small family run place and you can expect a long wait and slow/sometimes forgetful service. Sometimes they are so busy they won't take any take out orders over the phone! They really should expand. But overall it is an excellent place, especially if you are new to Burmese cuisine. Pros: Vegetarian dishes Cons: Parking, Crowded more

Definitely worth a few stars 12/8/2004

We were glad to stumble upon this restaurant. The tea leaf salad and samosa soup were out of this world. The only negative experience we had was with our entrees. Both times we ate here they were served luke warm. This may be the Burmese style, but I like my curries above room temperature. If you have not tried this place, I recommend checking it out. Be prepared for a wait! Pros: Samosa Soup, Unique Menu Items more
