There is no word to describe . . . 11/20/2010

how thankful I am to be able to train with Sifu Koh and the Bo Law Kung Fu instructors. They have helped and inspired me to to live my life with passion, presence, and confidence. I originally decided to try the class because I was looking for an alternative to a gym workout. What I found at Bo Law was much more. I'm now 33 years old and in the best shape of my life physically and mentally. This type of training has also impacted every area of my life. From my personal relationships to the amazing growth of my business (despite the economic turmoil!) All I can say is try it . . . you won't be disappointed. more

Hidden Rates Do not recommend 3/2/2010

This school has a lot of bells and whistles. What they don't tell you and im VERY surprized no one mentions is that the already VERY high starting price ONLY includes BASIC kung fu workouts. ALL of the higher level calsses that teach Iron Pal, hand to hand combat, weapons, or anything more than the basic kunfu workout class COST MORE. The total bill could add up to $350 a month. The school is very manipulative and dishonest with revealing these things. Pros: good teacher Cons: strict, dishonest payment polciy more

Awesome 10/8/2009

I?ve been at Bo Law for almost a year, and I average 4 times a week. I never ever did martial arts before, and a friend suggested I give it try for a month. I was hooked! I signed up for a year after my trial month. I also quit the gym, because I no longer needed it. Within the first 3 months I dropped 10 pounds and since then added more muscle definition. The training there is better then I could have imagined and beside the occasional time I get to pick up a weapon I don?t lift any weights at all. I love it. The classes are very organized, and all the other students there are focused. It?s not like a gym. The students there are nice, and friendly which makes it another plus, because I really got to meet great people and make new friends. But it?s not all physical at Bo Law. What you get is a new self awareness, and an urge to make yourself better. Master Koh is always there morning and night, and he understands the personal needs of his students. Bo Law is my second home, and I never could have dreamed of the personal benefits I have thus far received or even would have thought I needed since I?ve joined. I highly recommend Bo Law for Master Koh?s wealth of knowledge in Martial Arts, and for the physical and mental transformation you?ll receive. Pros: physical and mental transformation more

Great school 6/1/2009

I enrolled in Bo Law's program, and unfortunately had to stop going due to my busy work schedule. In my short time at this school I learned a lot. I entered this school with a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. Kung Fu was a brand new venture for me, and Bo Law was a great place to start. Its bit hard core (which is great for serious martial artists, but not so great for less intense people). The floors are a little shabby, and made of hardwood which makes knuckle push-ups very uncomfortable. Also, the floors make moving difficult (your shoes either stick to the floor, or enough dust has accumulated on your soles that you constantly slide), The floor of the school appears to be the only downfall. All the instructors are great teachers, Sifu Paul Koh is an amazing martial artist and a great teacher. I highly recommend Bo Law to anyone interested in studying kung fu Pros: instructors and corriculum Cons: the floor more

Do It With Your Mate! 8/22/2007

Cannot say enough great things about Bo Law Kung Fu. I joined with my husband to lose weight and get in a healthier state of mind. This was not the first attempt getting physically fit together. These failed attempts at excercising together really just strained our relationship rather than time being spent together (which is what we were hoping for). However, studying Kung Fu together leveled the playing field. Although physical strength is critical; so are style and technique so women can advance through the ranks as fast as men. more

Bo Law...Sifu...Father?family? 8/15/2007

Inescapable self awareness; spend a few years at this school and this is what you will achieve. Having only spent but a fleeting moment studying at this school thus far, I look forward to respecting it more daily. Having been a life long gymnast I started at Bo Law desiring to look inward and learn to understand myself more deeply. I brought with me my preconceived ideas and notions of traditional Kung Fu; I simply wanted to feel the beauty of that movement. I would simply acquaint myself with this movement and I would change. I felt this would be enough to grow. Well, speaking words without meaning is meaningless; and application is an integral part of what you learn at this school. I repeatedly find through the diligence of Master Paul Koh that while wanting one thing; I am unprepared for the surprises that come with continued study. The thing that I want becomes obsolete as perpetual clarity elucidates a growing self-awareness. The old saying, ?the more you learn the less you know,? becomes resoundingly clear under his tutelage. To say you grow as a person would be an understatement. To quote Marcus Aurelius ?nothing can ever happen to us that is not in accordance with nature.? At Bo Law you continually come to understand your true nature in an ever-evolving life. I have only one other person in my life, now gone, who ever truly conferred to me the simultaneous feeling of confusion and understanding that Master Koh provides; that was my father. I find it very suitable that I can ascribe the term Sifu to Master Koh. He has truly shared with me an inescapable self-awareness through hard work and a willingness, and my sometimes unwillingness, to grow that I continually look to refine. I have not reached this goal, but I do realize that, to quote Tennyson ?all experience is an arc where through gleams that un-traveled world.? You will find that the understanding of your own nature never sets as you move towards the horizon, as life will continue along with you. more

Taking the Positive with the Negative--or NOT? 1/9/2007

I think it is important to be fair to the school and say, firstly, that Sifu Koh sets a very positive example for his students. He is the embodiment of professionalism, skill, and he always tries to model this for his students. As a beginner, I find the beauty and the simplicity with which he executes certain stances, punches, and Tai-Chi positions to really be so incredibly graceful, yet undeniably possessing power. In the sense that some people are a pleasure to watch in life, I would say that his Kung Fu is one of them. Pros: Sifu Koh Cons: Dogmatism of some of the less senior instructors--too many people telling you too many things with authority, no room for plurality, too many ""Chiefs, not enough Indians."" more

Unlocking your Physical and Mental potential 7/22/2006

To find a Kung Fu school that inspires personal growth and finds a balance between feeding my soul and strengthening my body was my quest, and I found it in Bo Law Kung Fu. Let me explain: Pros: Teacher, Instructors, Lessons / WorkOuts more

Phenominal- traditional atmosphere with family warmth. 7/4/2006

I am very pleased, and Honored to be a student of Master Koh. Pros: Great instruction, traditional environment more

Too crowded and too strict 2/11/2006

ost instructors are very good. However, the classes can be incredibly crowded (especially after 6:00)-to the point you cant fully practice the moves without hitting someone next to you. Another draw-back is that the classes are very repetitive for the first few months (they can become very boring). Also, the workout is not balance-it mostly focuses on your groin and the upper leg muscles, so if youre looking for a broader sort of workout, then its not for you. Finally, the rules are rigidyou must agree on a schedule and tell them in advance when you are going to miss a class. Like most new Yorkers, my schedule is constantly in flux so this rule can be a total nuisance. Pros: Location, schedule Cons: Crowded, not very friendly, difficult to ask ?s more

Great 12/19/2005

Bo Law Kung Fu is by far the most important and life-changing institution from which I have ever learned. Not only do you study a time-honored form of combat, but because Sifu Koh and his instructors are such effective Kung Fu teachers and practitioners, you learn it in such a way that you will be able to benefit in almost all areas of your life. To me its quite simple - my goals in joining Bo Law 1 year ago were to lose weight and to gain focus and confidence. Since then, Ive lost 40 pounds, feel happier and more confident in general, and have been getting the best grades of my life as I enter my last semester in graduate school. That is not something I could have accomplished without the help of Bo Law. I strongly suggest giving this a try!! Pros: Weight Loss, Self-defense, Confidence Cons: Limited space @ night more

User review by chachi970 12/15/2005

I have only been studing here for a year but I see a greater change in my body doing this than I ever did going to the gym or doing yoga. The classes are a great way to help you physicaly and mentally. And don't think that you will get stuck in a rut because classes can be different semester to semester or even day to day. To anyone who has thought about joining a new gym check out a class here first and you will be very happy you did. Pros: Great Workout more

Beyond the physical 12/14/2005

Anybody who says that Bo Law Kung Fu offers just a workout clearly does not see past the physical nature of what this school tries to emphasize. Ever since I had joined this school, my mental concentration and focus has improved dramatically, and I can firmly say that the recent accolades that I have achieved at my workplace (e.g. my promotion and substantial raise) can be credited to the help of the instructors from this establishment. Anyone who wishes to better oneself in more than simply physique and stamina should give this school a try. Pros: Teachers, Class Availability, Convenient Location more

Great place! 12/14/2005

I have to disagree with the previous reviewer. I think one can definitely learn and practice the applications of the skills we learn at Bo Law without sparring, if one pays attention and continues studying; it's pretty much through experience in training that you learn the applications. This school is not for those who want to be a meathead - it helps you learn a balance between mental, physical and spiritual skill. The school also has several different classes and seminars that are matching sets that help you learn the applications through practical use. I have been studying at Bo Law for years and think it is a great place to learn, and I can't get enough of it! I highly recommend it to new students. Pros: Excellent instructors, Individual Attention, Great Hours more

Best Kept Secret 12/12/2005

With todays' generation of kids it's all about what can I do right now or what's the latest trend. They lack the patience and discipline and the respect from past generations. This is what Bo Law Kung Fu teaches to both kids and adults. The main purpose of learning traditional Chinese martial arts is not how to fight. If all you were learning is how to fight then why is it called Martial ""Arts"". The beauty is derived from something inside. Loyalty, Discipline, Humility, Respect are all aspects of our hectic New York lifestyle that are lacking and more so with our children. If you are looking for quality instruction with a school that really cares about what they are doing and how they teach, Bo Law Kung Fu is your place. If you just want to brawl, hang out on the street corner and alleyways more

Not worth it 11/20/2005

Everything about this school says traditional kung fu school, if that concept of traditional was based on old Shaw Brothers movies. One of the main purposes of learning a martial art is to learn how to use said martial art. That is where Bo Law truly & deliberately fails its students. There is no application of the material or sparring. What then is the use? Not only that, Bo Law is ridiculously expensive. There are many better and less expensive options in NYC. Bo Law will get you in shape, I'll give them that. However, a gym membership is cheaper. In a nutshell, in this school you will be learning martial dance, not martial arts. Cons: cost, useless, overcrowded more

Excellent 8/24/2005

The training that you recieve at Bo Law goes beyond that of other martial arts schools, in addition to the basics of stances, punches, kicks, physical training and forms you learn valuable lessons that trancend the boundries of the school and apply to your everyday life. The instructors are friendly, helpfull and very knowledgeable of the material and classes are conveniently running all day to fit to anyone's schedule. Anyone looking for more out of their martial arts experience should attend classes at Bo Law Kung Fu more

A Lifetime of Learning 12/9/2004

At Bo Law Kung Fu, you learn a lot more than just punching and kicking. You learn a lot about yourself! Sifu Koh and his instructors provide excellent training in classical Kung Fu forms and weaponry. Through intensive training, discipline, and dedication, students are truly encouraged to develop their minds, bodies and spirits, and this training carries over into many other areas of your life. There is a spirit of generosity that Sifu Koh has instilled in his instructors that helps students understand the many physical, mental and cultural aspects of Kung Fu. At Bo Law Kung Fu, you will never stop learning, no matter how long you are there. Pros: excellent instruction, variety of techniques, lots to learn more
