This place is very selective of the musicians that play here, so you are always guaranteed good music when you walk through their doors. Pros: Never a dull moment Cons: Crowded on the weekends more

Disappointing sound 1/19/2009

I was excited to see my friend play here because of the Bitter End's history, but ended up being very disappointed in the sound. I'm sure the sound system is "modern" as they say, but they need a new sound guy. He seems to have lost his high-end hearing, and cranked the treble way up. There was no "kick" to the low end. The amount of reverb could have been dialed back a bit as well; it was distracting when quieter performers had their S's ringing out behind their words. They get great folk, rock and classic rock acts here. Come listen. Especially on Wednesday nights, the place is kickin'. more

See new talent at a classic night spot 10/23/2004

We came upon the club by recommendation to hear live music while entertaining visitors. I frankly haven't heard about it until I was reminded that Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan played here. It's a NY landmark so take a look at the mural of past performers who played there. Mixed Bad on Bleecker 12/9/2002

Bitter End is an instituition and a place I love so I'm gonna have to do this. The talent is exceptional and it's a great venue for Bleecker because the crowd is old enough and classy enough that you don't have to worry about getting your shoes puked on. My problem is the crouchy help. Do they ever get new wait or bar staff here? It's like a bad union shop where the most bitter (sorry for the pun) and irratable stay on for life. Would it kill this witches to crack a smile or say excuse me or thank you once in a while? Just asking. Pros: Talented Musicians, intimate room, great sound Cons: bitchy waitresses, crouchy doorpeople, bathroom lines more

A really intimate venue...a great place to check out your favorite bands or to scope a new, hot talent. It's a tight fit if you come with bigger groups but it's worth it if you're there to check out the music. 18 and over nights are a little annoying....   • Since 1961, many legends have launched their careers in front of The Bitter End's famous brick wall. This old-school New York bar is perfect for watching new artists play their first gigs in the city. This venue offers good service, great live music and is a part of history.

  • The Scene
    This landmark venue was once the stomping ground of standup and music legends including George Carlin and Bob Dylan. It opened its doors back in 1962--and looks about the same today, except for framed pictures and painted murals lining its red brick walls in homage to the successful acts of its past. Comfortable and homey, the expansive interior is filled with intimate wooden tables, and the well-worn bar serves brews and mixed drinks to an audience of tourists and performers' friends.

    The Draw
    Decades later, the spotlight is still on the stage. The owner, who's had a hand in the nightclub since 1968, continues to give up-and-coming musicians a chance. There are four to six live acts each night, ranging from ballad songstresses to rock bands or funk groups. And while the venue maintains a sense of authenticity, the staff takes pride in its modern sound system.
