Unpleasant owner/manager 12/13/2010

The food is good but overpriced. My husband and I liked to get the beignets and coffee. Liked the japanese eggplant sandwich. Enjoyed the pozole/tortilla soup (sp?). The last we were time there I waited outside with our little dog while my husband was getting the beignets & coffee. It was a very long wait in the heat so he brought a little cup of water out for me then I set it down for our little dog. The owner/manager woman with long dark hair was watching. After our dog lapped some water, the gal came over, took the cup, tossed the water and called it trash. We have never gone back. more

Try them for breakfast! 5/5/2010

Big Sky is my favorite restaurant, it's one of the few places in SLO with really awesome vegetarian dishes. \r \r If you have only gone for dinner you should try their breakfasts, almost all of them come with this really great ginger coffee cake. more

Big Sky Cafe is terrific for any meal! 1/2/2010

Big Sky is a fantastic place to dine. Their menu has a lot of fun, different options. It is definitely on the must visit list when we are back in SLO. more

How is this a FAVORITE?? 5/3/2009

Since relocating to San Luis we've tried Big Sky a few times. The first, I was brought the wrong soup. The second, I was impressed with the quantity of food on my plate, but half of it was flavorless. The third try had the same results, some of the entrees were not warm enough... if they're so darn fast, how is it that they can't get hot food on the table? REally? I think they take pride in being a local favorite and seem to be okay with being mediocre in flavor and service. Perception is everything. Pros: Some great flavors Cons: Consistancy. Complete the culinary thought. more

solid restaurant with good food 2/8/2009

Most of these reviews are for breakfast so here's a recent dinner review. The food is fresh and the ingredients are healthy. The little corn bread muffins they bring out to the table are really good. I ordered the special which was crab cakes with coconut rice and sugar snap peas. The crab cakes and the sauce were excellent, the coconut rice and peas were low on flavor. My partner ordered the lamb shank with potato latkes. The meat was delicious and the sauce was thick and flavorful. I think the lamb was a really good dish. The beer selection was pretty good. One reviewer mentioned that the service was very fast and I noticed that too. I think it's because you seat on hard, slippery benches that are really deep; you have to sit forward with no back support and that can get really uncomforatble after 30 minutes or so. Maybe that's why they hurry you through! more

Local Favorite 12/20/2007

During a visit to friends living in SLO, we had breakfast at Big Sky Cafe. It is one of their local favorites, but the first time for me. The decor is fun, artsy and colorful. The menu offers a wide variety of unique selections at modest prices for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I opted for a pretty standard breakfast, the service was prompt & the food was delicious. I would absolutely dine at Big Sky Cafe again, and recommend it to others who happen to be in SLO! more

Very nice ambiance 8/6/2006

I'm from New York, so maybe my criteria are a little skewed. I liked this restaurant but did not think the food was anything better than good. It's good solid food, not gourmet. The restaurant is lovely inside. There is a nice varied choice choice on the menu and the prices are reasonable. The wine list is short but nice and reasonably priced. The meal was served very quickly (a bit too quickly if you're trying to talk and enjoy the wine). Haven't tried breakfast but I'll try it tomorrow. I suspect it will be good. Pros: Ambiance, wine, price Cons: Service too fast more

The best all around. 8/1/2006

Eating out in SLO can be monotonous at times, because there just aren't all that many restraunts. But Big Sky always seems to be different and exciting. The variety and health aspects are what I like most. Me and my husband have lived here for 6 years, and Big Sky has always been our favorite. Pros: Great food, healthy, variety Cons: Small place, can get crowded, you might have to wait outside for a seat. more

My Favorite Restaurant 7/28/2006

I love Big Sky. Whether it is for breakfast, lunch or dinner, I have never had a bad meal here. My husband is a big fan of their pancakes with melted cheese inside, while I am addicted to their ginger coffee cake (also good with a nice pot of tea in the afternoon).Excellent coffee, even their decaf is good. At lunch, they make the best turkey burger I have ever had( delicious with sweet potato fries) and their noodle bowls are yummy! Regrettably, they took my favorite polenta and mushrooms off the menu. I keep hoping that someday it will re-surface someday. For dinner, try the ancho chile glazed salmon. The sweet/spicy glaze complements the salmon perfectly. Service is friendly and efficent, and they always take good care of my toddler's needs (she is a big fan of the sweet potato fries as well as their turkey chili). Ok, now I'm hungry. Do yourself a favor and go to Big Skyr taste buds will thank you. PROS: Food, Service CONS: No more polenta more

Best Cornbread I've ever had! 6/8/2006

I live in San Luis. Whenever my roommate and I try to figure out where we want to eat out, for breakfast lunch or dinner, we rarely vary from Big Sky. (The only exception is when we don't want to wait for a table since it gets very crowded at peak times.) I have never had a bad meal. The menu is diverse enough for anyone and offers many healthy, different options, such as yam risotto (a favorite) and sweet potato fries. Did I mention their cornbread is to die for? Really it is. It's a sin to go to Big Sky and NOT have the cornbread. more

Great for breakfast 3/7/2006

We go to Big Sky for breakfast every time we are in San Luis Obispo. The menu is varied and includes some unusual but delicious items you don't find elsewhere. The decor is eceletic and the place is casual. We love it. I don't think there is a better breakfast place in SLO. The lunch and dinner menus look interesting (and inexpensive) but we haven't tried anything but breakfast. Pros: delicious food, some unusual items more

Good food and great atmosphere. 11/5/2005

The decor is great and the food is delicious. The bread basket and the sweet potato fries are phenomenal . The service was pretty good, but the server seemed to have a bit of a superiority complex and when I called to ask when they closed, I was told the wrong time and therefore ended up getting turned away at the door. I'm just being picky though; I love this place overall. more

Great food and a wine selection to match 4/1/2003

The atmosphere is eclectic, which matches the food they serve well. They create combinations i never would have dreamed up. If you go for dinner, they have a great wine selection, especially from the local vineyards. Pros: Vegetarian food, Wine Selection, Cozy atmosphere more

Great Breakfast 8/12/2002

I can't speak to the lunch or dinner, but breakfast at the Big Sky Cafe is fantastic. Breakfast meals come with either coffee cake or corn bread. Everyone at our table got the coffee cake, and it was incredible. A huge piece of coffee cake would normally BE the breakfast, and while I was already full when my omelette arrived, the omelette was so good that I ate it anyway. It was a spicy jumbalaya filled extravaganza. Everyone loved their meals, from pancakes to scrambles. more

Ten it is........ 7/9/2002

This restauant definitely deserves a "10", for food, service, ambience, value........The menu is a healthy choice of foods and fresh vegetables from around the area. There is a large selection of organic items, fresh fish, great salads and good wine. more
