Left so much to be desired... 7/28/2008

We recently ate there on 7.26.08. The food came out cool, and the waiter was not apologetic when we had to send a salad back because it contained fish, (not noted on the menu,) as I'm highly allergic. The food was bland, cool and meaningless. We waited when we first entered the establishment and had to physically find the hostess to seat us, (as we had a reservation that evening.) There were only two other parties dining that night, (six people total, including us.) We remarked about this as we entered. \r We were charged for the salad we returned, (and told that it was already on, 'the receipt.') We were livid, but decided to leave a smaller tip and leave, as the waiter was already incredibly inattentive. \r \r Wish that could be the end of the story- but we were charged... FOUR times for our food. (FOUR.) How does that even HAPPEN? We were told the manager was 'out' for today, and we could speak to her later in the week. Really, we'd like the $400.00 in overages back- and we'll be contacting our bank. \r \r Will never dine again, and will tell everyone of our experience. Pros: Great atmosphere, beautiful view. Cons: Terrible service, food, and attention to even small details. more

Not so great 3/15/2007

I went to lunch with a co-worker and was not impressed by the food or service. I ordered the thin grilled sirloin steak. I ordered it medium temperature and it came to me well done. Well done steak is a travesty in my book. It didn't even taste like steak. Absolutely awful! I would have complained but the waitress never bothered to come back to the table to ask how our food tasted. She didn't come back until we were finished. The warm fingerling potato salad that came with the steak was good but not enough to make my meal worth the $19 I was charged for a lunch entree. \r Pros: Terrace seating is great Cons: Food is expensive and not that great more

Impressed 3/5/2007

It had been a long time since I'd last been to Basil's. I wasn't expecting much. However, we were treated to a lovely meal, with reasonably-priced wine and good service. Thumbs up to Herb, who seemed to be waiting on numerious tables, yet was fun and knowledgeable. The shrimp potstickers, tuna and orange/ginger salad appetizer was terrific. Our friends ordered the wild rice soup and enjoyed it very much. They also enjoyed the duck entree. I and a friend ordered the marlin, which was served with a seaweed/radish salad. I initially sent the marlin back because when it arrived at the table, was dry as a bone. No flake or moisture left at all. Herb apologized and swiftly took my fish back. The replacement that arrived was succulent, flaky and worked well with the soy/cream sauce. My husband was disappointed with the quality of his ribeye, but otherwise enjoyed the wine, presentation, ambience and service. Our party of six agreed we'd like to return to Basil's. Pros: Creative dishes, tasty sauces Cons: Can be difficult to find entrance more

Lunch at Basil 11/13/2005

Conveniently located and close to my IDS office in the complex. Great food. more

Kudos to a hotel restaurant 8/5/2005

After a friend recommended Basil's I thought we would give it a try. We were greeted friendly and sat promptly. Once seated they brought out what they called an amuse bouche for free. A little deviled duck egg with truffles. Wow! I ordered the ribeye steak and it was the best, most tender steak that I have EVER had. My girlfriend ordered the soft-shell crab (tempura style) and it was to die for. Soft-shell crab can be hit or miss and Basil's sure hit it right on! We shared a chocolate-chipotle dessert that was heaven. With the service, quality of food, and the value we cannot think of a better hotel restaurant downtown Minneapolis. Pros: Food, Service, Value Cons: Finding the enterance more

Wowed the first time, this time not impressed. 7/28/2005

I had been here two years ago. I had the ribeye steak and my girlfriend the prawns. We were amazed at the meal and service. My girlfriend took me there tonight and unfortunately the same did not occur, I see mixed reviews, either excellent or poor seems to be the norm for this restaurant. As for my birthday dinner: The bus boy was more attentive than waiter. The doiley from our calimari was soaked in grease. Softshell crab was greasey and was more like a batter rather than a tempura as stated on the menu. My girlfriends duck was a bit over cooked and kindof dry. We will not return. We even recieved one of our meals free by using our NPR member card and I feel even with the $20 savings this evening was no value. I recommend you stay away from this joint. It is inconsistant and unpredictable. Pros: Atmosphere, Ambience, Live music, Pianist Cons: Poor Service, Inconsistant, Greasey more

Wowed 6/5/2005

A friend and I went for dinner. It was absolutely delightful. The service was impeccable - compliments to our server Herb and wait-assist Jamie. Not only did our server offer helpful suggestions, but when my friend and I discussed sharing two entrees, they arrived split on separate plates with a smile. Every step of the way the service was charming. And the food! We had halibut and chicken. Both were the type of dish that makes you stop and really savor your food. The crabcake appetizer had large chunks of crab and was delicious as well. We had cocktails, a glass of wine, an appetizer, two entrees, coffee, and a dessert. Our bill came to $73 with happenings. That's insane. I haven't had a dinner I wanted to rave about this much in a while. Pros: Charming service, Moutwatering food, Great Value more

Give it a try...You'll love it. 7/6/2004

My wife and I were greeted with smiles and were seated promptly by the host. We went with the chef's recommendation and were extremely impressed. We give the food, service and romantic atmosphere an A+, and will dine with Basil's again in the near future. Pros: Reasonable Price, Atmosphere, Customer Service more

Wonderful evening at Basil's! 6/27/2004

The food and service was excellent! Basil's is perfect for a romantic dining experience. Highly recommended for an evening in downtown Minneapolis. Pros: Food, Service, Ambience more

Special Event 3/30/2004

I took a coworker here for her retirement lunch and what a disappointment. The food was average (for a restaurant of their reputation) but the service was horrible. We waited a long time for our check and I finally asked the manager to get it for us. He informed the waitress to bring it. She in turn poked her head from around a corner and yelled, ""you guys don't want desert?"" We were NOT impressed and our guest of honor did not leave with the memory I had hoped for her. We got better service from the busboy! Pros: Nice atmosphere more

Location vs. Food 3/27/2004

For a special lunch we decided to take our out-of-town guest to the IDS Crystal Court on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was empty when one other table left after our 12:15 arrival. We did get a patio seat overlooking the Crystal Court and it was a quiet relaxing spot. The food, though, was lackluster. Large portions, yes, but low on taste. I had the salmon patty sandwich and it was served on a huge bun, with stone hard tomatoes and a pile of fries that were tough within minutes. We also ordered the walleye - grease, grease, grease and the chicken salad croissant sandwich, the best of the food. Other than the location, nothing was special about this meal other than the heap of food left on our plate when we were done picking through the very average fare. Pros: large servings, great location Cons: , average service more

MTM Knew something 2/10/2004

Breakfast 2/7/2004. Seated at the Mary Tyler Moore table (See the opening of MTM show for visual reference) out of ignorance. Menu had some fresh twists on the old breakfast standbys (Eggs Benedict on wild rice cakes) and it was refreshing to get doting service on a slow Saturday morning. Fresh items abound and good coffee, highly recommended for Breakfast. Pros: Great Breakfast!, Fresh twist on menu, The Terrace more

Stay Away 2/16/2003

I took my date there for a nice romantic dinner on Valentine's Day. We were seated promptly and then the madness started. It took 20 min. for our waitress to take our order and another 25 min. to get our 1st drinks. Our waitress forgot our appetizers. We asked for a manager and told him our feelings; he smiled and walked away without so much as an apology. The attitudes of both the server and the manager were appalling. The overall experience was horribly unforgettable. Pros: Great Food, Nice Views Cons: Horrible Service more

Not Good at All 1/24/2003

I was not impressed. The poultry is dry, the freshness of the seafood in the gumbo is SUSPECT. Avoid Basil's. Have a burger at McDonalds instead more

quick and tastey 8/21/2002

the service was outstanding, it was busy but the staff seemed to accomodate everyone with ease. but the best part about my experience was the food. i will be back sooner than later. Pros: service, food, location Cons: smaller table, wanted a longer lunch, parking more

excellent 8/21/2002

The food is great. Location is very convenient, because we can access it via skyway. more

Last Impressions... 8/8/2002

We've never returned... It was my intention to begin the new millenium (remember Y2K?) with a magical night on the town with my wife, beginning at Basil's. They welcomed us with the news that they'd lost our reservation. They were able to seat us anyway, as long as we promised to vacate our table in an hour. The prix fixe was exessive, reportedly due to the chef they'd imported from lands unknown. Each of our four courses was unpleasantly cold, though I'm certain they weren't intended to be. There's nothing quite like chilly, chewy venison and quivering mussels. What our waiter lacked in charm, he made up with indifference. I did not expect a buffet, but assumed we'd get salads of more than one leaf... I'd frequented Basil's before and had been modestly impressed. They've never ""knocked my socks off"" though, and I probably won't take my chances again. Pros: Quiet Ambiance, MaryTMoore Mystique Cons: Indiffernt Service, Poor Value more
