That was Chicken Pot Pie??????? 11/17/2011

Sure wish I had read reviews before wasting $8.65 on food that I wouldn't have paid a dollar for had I known how unbelievably bad it was. Canned green beans with no seasoning. I'm not exaggerating. The ""chicken pot pie"" was made with stale, hard to cut bisquits, corn starch, shredded carrots, no peas, corn, red bell peppers, and garlic salt. And did I mention the corn starch? Only 5 minutes away is Boomerangs if you want really great chicken pot pie (which I think they call Meat and Veggie pies). Giving Austin Diner 1 star is being generous. No wonder the place was 80% empty at lunch time. more

The only good reviews bout this place must've been employees 8/27/2010

Terrible! I joined this site just so I could complain about this cheap place. I don't mean cheap menu items, you might as well cook at home from the 99 cent store...it would still be better. You can tell they cut all corners they can in their food quality & purchasing. My boyfriend lives walking distance from here. I would gladly walk out of the way entirely, just to avoid this place. I hope they go out of business & open a better joint up. more

Best Mexican Food In Austin 6/23/2010

I am not form Austin and love Mexican food, this is the closest to authentic, had huge breakfast tacos with salsa that was Excellent, not hot, but full of flavor. I actuall keep asking my sister who lives in Austin to go back. I want to buy some of the Hot Sauce. This stuff could be bottled and sold! Pros: Coffee was delicious, hot sauce Amazing, comfy n cute Cons: Cramer in skall siver containers moved frm table to table more

BAD coffee 4/9/2010

The food was adequate. I had the gingered pancakes which were actually very good, but my hubby's coffee was rancid. We changed it out twice to no avail. I wouldn't necessarily go back, this was just ok for me. Pros: fun decor Cons: really bad coffee more

Completely Disgusting 1/29/2010

This needs negative stars. Smells like death. Decorated like a Goodwill store, including the dust. Coffee that tastes like it came from an abandoned cabin. Maybe its the overiding stench of the place joining with the flavor. Meat generally tastes old, eggs: tasteless. Pancakes, dough-like. Prices: High. Freakin' ridiculous. Needs a Health Dept. visit and possibly a close down. Pros: Maybe I'll be able to get the smell out of my clothes Cons: Yes, I do feel con'd. more

Tiny Little Maggots in my aj 8/15/2009

They were small, maybe a millimeter. There was maybe 3 or 4 floating at the top, squiggling around. Pros: Brunch was half decent Cons: There were a handful of fly maggots in our apple juice. more

dirty and salty but good service 1/6/2009

My daughter and I went to the diner on Monday, the 5th of January at around 10am. Our server, Elisabeth was great. That was the only great part. The window sill of the booth we were sitting in was full of dead flies and dust. The entry to the bathroom was filthy. I ordered huevos rancheros. I have NEVER sent a plate of food back but the ranchero sauce was so salty I could not eat more that two bites. Elizabeth took it back a brought be migas which were good, but different than they used to be. more

Best Breakfast 9/30/2007

This is the best American breakfast place in town, that's why you only find locals there. The service is adequate. Usually pretty friendly. But this is Austin, and most places have terrible service. So, I'm gonna go ahead and say they have awesome service considering the league they are playing. Besides, it's the weekend and you've just lost the plot if you're in a rush. Go back to Threadgills or Dallas if you can't just kick back and relax at the Austin Diner. Pros: great food. no tourists. Cons: tourists will find it eventually. more

A Denver Omlette Amongst Friends 7/19/2007

A question: have you ever wanted - NEEDED, really - a Denver Omlette? You know exactly what I am talking about: that delicious and seductive blend of salt, eggs, butter, mushrooms, green onions, black pepper and green bell peppers. That sweet ham. Made only better because it is topped off with the love and dedication that only a real ""line cook"" can bring. Then, you absolutely MUST trek down Burnet to this Den of Coloradoian Goodness at the Austin Diner and order a Denver Omlette. Or two! Now! When I relocated to Austin from Boulder, CO, I'll admit, I was skepitcal: ""This isn't Denver. Heck, this isn't even Colorado. This is Texas, Diana (that's my wife, Diana)! Our days with the Denver Omlette are over."" Boy was I ever wrong! ....also, their iced tea is good. more

Here are the facts. It's all about the food. 6/17/2007

I've been to the Austin Diner 25 times over the past couple of years. Probably more. The service has been largely uninspired, drinks have gone un-refilled, the decor is strangely unsettling. Yet I have never had anything other than a wonderful meal. Sometimes an inspired one. I've had their sandwiches and soups and specials and breakfasts and so forth. Honestly, it is just consistently great food at a reasonable price. Half the time I get their tuna salad sandwich on toasted sourdough with swiss cheese. Unbelievable. more

Great Decor & Customer Service 12/11/2006

The food is quite good (not outstanding or anything). But what I really like is the decor. It is most definitely one of the most interesting restaurants I've been to. Pros: Decor, Service, Experience Cons: Price, Parking more

You People Are Nuts! 5/24/2006

Seriously. Just go there. I'm not sure what disturbance was in the force when some of these previous reviewers visited Austin Diner, but this is one of my favorite places to eat (especially breakfast) in all of Austin. No, it's not fine dining. If you want a fresh tablecloth and a native english speaking server, then you should go somewhere else. But if you appreciate the laid back friendly culture of Austin, then it's for you. I haven't even mentioned the food! It's all wonderful. That's all there is to it. The only variable I can think of is the pancakes. At their worst, they're very good...like Kerbey Lane on a GOOD day. At their best, they're the best damn pancakes I've ever put in my mouth. My advice? Get yer ass out there this saturday morning and find out for yourself. Or don't. I'll get served quicker that way. Pros: Friendly Service , Excellent Food, Reasonably Priced Cons: what cons??? more

Great Reviews Set Us Up for Disapointment 9/2/2005

We heard nothing but great things about Austin Diner and were a little lit down. The pancakes were below average, four ice cubes in a huge tea glass and there was a bit of a language barrier with the waitstaff. The prices were not as cheap as were described in other reviews. However, the omlettes were more than good and the food was prompt and served hot. We will go back, but with lower expectations. Pros: Omelettes, Hot Food, Fresh Ingrediants Cons: Waitstaff more

Review by a Regular 10/14/2004

Living only a couple of blocks away, we eat breakfast here regularly, and enjoy it considerably. The food is good, portions immense, your coffee cup will never be empty, and the ambience and servers have personality. For best value, get a breakfast taco, or two if really hungry, and ask for some salsa. Its gets busy on weekends, but we've never had to wait, unlike some trendier spots... Pros: inexpensive, breakfast tacos, pancakes more
