This bar is full of older women looking for younger men or older men harrasing younger women. Gross crowd of people. I felt like I was in a swinger bar.

The ONLY Sophisticated Bar on Glenwood!! 3/6/2010

At my first passing, the place was inviting Sat. at 8pm which suited my wife and I after dinner perfectly. We ventured in sat at the bar and ordered our cocktails and Cigar from Andy who in all my experience in the restaurant business (12 yrs)one of the most hospitable and attentive mixologists I've come across warranting a bigger than normal tip. The booths, bar area are very comfortable and the place deserves the "Classiest City Lounge" Award! Great Job Andy and referrals are going out! Buono Fortuna!! Steve Pros: Great Staff, Cigar Selection, Wine list Cons: None more

My New "Spot" 1/6/2010

I have never written a review, but felt compelled after my first visit to Amra's!! This is my new place!! I usually go to Michael Dean's for my post-workday therapy, but after the smoking ban I heard from a friend this was the only place we could go to smoke inside. The style is pretty and classy and the bartender was from the old school of bartending where they actually talk to customers. We had a long conversation about my job and some mutual interests that we share, and I actually left feeling like I made a friend :-) So Shannon, see you next Monday--you are a sweet girl, and a great bartender! Pros: wonderful staff, good tunes more

Classy Place, Friendly Staff! 6/10/2009

After visiting Amra's on several occasions over the last couple of months, I now consider it a regular stop for my weekend shenanigans :)! This place never ceases to impress--with a martini menu to die for and a staff that consistently makes us feel welcome. I love that this is not a "college" bar, and I love even more that the owners/manager take pains to ensure it remains this way. My girlfriends and I always have a blast coming here to dance, as they also have the best live music in town on the weekends. Ladies, if you are searching for a place to wear heels and a dress without feeling out of place, here it is! Pros: Amazing Mojito martini, great music, nice staff more

It's about time!! 6/6/2009

It's about time Raleigh had a swanky jazz cigar bar that caters to a community other than college students. It's the perfect place to unwind after a long day of work. They have awesome music...some of the best bands in Raleigh! I especially love the outdoor seating and intimate atmosphere. I am always blown away when the owner HIMSELF greets the patrons and sees to it that their needs are met by an amazing staff. They literally go out of their way to make sure you have a great experience. I can't remember the last time I got top quality service like that...not even at local high priced full service restaurants. Pros: Ambience Cons: None more

Worst Bar in Raleigh 5/18/2009

If you like ordering drinks, never getting them, but still being charged for them, then this is the place for you. Oh, you should also have an appreciation for EXTREMELY rude staff and management and feel generous enough to pay for drinks that aren't yours 'cause odds are, they'll end up on your tab. With their "customer is always wrong" mentality, I'm really not sure how this place still has any customers left. The band was great, but we won't ever go back to see them at Amra's. Good thing they play different bars. more

Wow - incompetent staff and management 5/17/2009

This is the worst place I've been to in Raleigh to date. Waitress overcharged all of us, put someone else's drinks on our tab, charged us for items we didn't order, forgot to bring half of our order most of the time, etc. Don't know her name. Medium brown wavy hair. Won't ever go back. Jazz club feel? I don't think so... Pros: good location Cons: incompetent staff, smoking more

Welcoming atmosphere, relaxing and sociable 12/17/2008

I felt compelled to write a review for the first time after going to a scotch and cigar night hosted by Amra's. This was extremely well hosted and our group really felt welcomed. The owner/manager, Alex, went out of his way to introduce himself and make sure we were taken care of. The event was well run and enjoyable. The atmosphere was comfortable in the seating arrangements, and the air handling system was more than up to the task to handle the cigars, impressive considering the event. I plan to make another trip during a more normal operating night. Pros: great ambiance and relaxing atmosphere more

High Class, Refreshing Service 4/28/2008

Where has this place been? My wife and I have been searching for somewhere to relax and have a stress-free evening out. This is it!! After being told of Amra's by a neighbor, we decided to risk giving it a shot on a Saturday...quite impressed is the best way to describe our experience. Not only does this place allow cigar-smoking, they ENCOURAGE it--and my wife who hates it was not even bothered because they have huge smoke eaters so you can barely notice the smell. Translation--I got to smoke a stoagie to my heart's content minus upsetting the missus or anyone around me. SCORE! The service too was way above average--the bartenders actually seemed happy to be there...she took the time to help my wife try several wines before picking one and talked to us for a while before giving us written directions to our next destination. I loved the feel of the place. The only thing I would change is I wish they had food!! We would have stayed there all night could we have eaten dinner!! Nevertheless, a great experience and we will be back many times. Pros: Ambience, Service Cons: No dinner! more

Older Women in Heat 10/29/2007

Went Saturday night...30s and up crowd...a few cheesy older guys, but lots of MILFs looking for action. They mix strong drinks...a strong Makers & water just like I like. Guys looking for action from older women...this is your place. more

BEST BAR IN RALEIGH 11/29/2006

What a great venue for live music. My girlfriends and I went to Amra's for a bachellorette party, and it was one of the best times I have had in Raleigh. The band was great, the dancing was great, and most importantly even as packed as they were we did not get bothered by a bunch of sleazy guys all night. It felt great to go out on Glenwood South and be surronded by adults. Pros: Dancing, Adults, Band, Service more

Great Place for a Good Time 9/30/2006

My husband and I went to Amra's last night and had a blast! It was packed but not overwhelming. The place is beautiful and the people were friendly. The band was great they played a good variety of dance hits and mellow numbers. It was so refreshing to go out and not hang out with teenagers or have to listen to techno music all night long. This place is a refreshing chaneg to the other night spots on Glenwood. It is a great place if you are looking to hange out with adults. Pros: Ambience, Music, Service more

Great! 9/7/2006

Such a cool spot. I love the old school 40's feel. The inside is beautiful and the bartender Shannon makes the best drinks in Raleigh. more

Its about time! 4/13/2006

Its about time Raleigh got a place like this. It was good from the get go, the door man did not let the man infront of my girlfriend and I in because he was wearing torn jeans and flipflops. GREAT!!! The inside looked like a bar from Chicago or NewYork and the service was great. They had a Jazz Quartet with a vocalist that was impresive. I was a little weary at first because of the cigars but the high ceilings and smoke eaters made the smoke just barely noticable. Pros: atmosphere, service, drinks more

simply exquisite! 4/7/2006

Truly, one of a kind! The atmosphere is unlike any bar in Raleigh-the staff is extremely couteous-Honestly this is the finest establishment in all my years of traveling-can't wait to come back Pros: Ambience, Relaxing, Great Staff Cons: zero more

  • In Short
Located a block from Raleigh's Historic Depot District, this jazz club is reminiscent of an old-time speakeasy--where one would expect Al Capone to walk in at any time. Its 22-foot-high ceiling, leather chairs and dark fabric wall panels complement a baby grand and small tables accessorized by lamps. Live entertainment, cigars, cocktails, wines and beer draw a brisk after-work professional crowd. Weekends bring a mix of young and old jazz lovers.
