I have dyed my hair myself for way too long and had nothing but red brassy straw (was always trying to go for a light golden brown) to show for it. Carolyn listened to what I wanted and gave me the color of my dreams. She managed to get the red out and gave me a color (and subtle golden highlights) that also highlighted my eye color and skin. I always thought my skin was blotchy, but with this new color I am much more even-toned. John then gave me a cut that absolutely works for my thick coarse hair (long layers, side-swept bangs) and I can even do it myself! The staff is lovely and attentive. I did have to stay there four hours but, well, I needed a lot of corrective work done! Now, when I go back for a root touch-up or cut, I'm sure it won't take as long. After some years of deliberaion, I finally decided to highlight my hair. My best friend recommended her usual place and girl, salon AKS on Madison Ave. I was a little nervous because I didn't know what to expect. When I sat in Jennifers seat, she asked me exactly what I wanted. She commented on my beautiful virgin hair, and said that my ideas were exactly what she pictured. We vibed immediately, I knew we would because my best friend loves her so much as well. It didn't take that long, and Jennifer explained exactly what she would be doing, and then continued to do so every step of the way. She gave me beautiful honey highlights that frame my face and fall just perfectly. For a first timer, I really couldn't have asked for a better experience. I just felt like I was in really capable hands, and for anybody considering it, you'll trust her, and then breathe a sigh of relief when you see the final product. more

Unfortunately, there is no screening process for information posted on blogs. The only way to decide if Jennifer is a good colorist is to actually see her work for yourself. Jennifer has been coloring my hair for years!!!!!!!!! I love her work so much that I followed her to AKS (quite a hike from Brooklyn). Not only is Jennifer talented she is a joy to be around. The only word to describe jennifer at AKS is " THE BEST" every single time i go to see her it is a joy. Not only does my hair come out exactly the way i want it but she is a real breath of fresh air. it is always a pleasure to see her at the salon. I decided to try this salon for a touchup on my blonde highlights to take a break from my usual salon and to say I was extremely disappointed by the skill of my colorist is the understatement of the day. Do not go to this salon unless what you're looking for is so basic it can virtually not be ruined. Jennifer was my assigned colorist and it was clear right off the bat that she didn't know what she was doing. When I asked her questions about the "new process" she wanted to try on my hair (despite the fact that I told her I was very happy with my previous highlights and just wanted a touch up) she could not give me intelligent answers. When I asked her about how it was going to look she her answers were vague and elusive as if she, herself, didn't know what she was doing. When I saw how my hair looked once it was "painted" by Jennifer and dried, I wanted to cry. By far, the worst highlight I have ever received. When I went to Jennifer and told her it was not what I asked for and I was very unhappy, she didn't seem to comprehend what I was telling her. When I pushed her on it, she agreed to try to make it better it with another process and made it even worse. Finally, after 5 hours at the salon (which is not a all luxurious and quite uncomfortable) with my hair looking increasingly worse, I just wanted to get out of there. One of the assistants came over to me and told me she couldn't believe what had been done to my hair and brought the manager over who kept telling me how beautiful my hair looked and offered me a 20% discount on a manicure. Frightenly, I noticed there was a plaque on Jennifer's stand which indicated that she was about to move from junior to "senior" colorist. Avoid this salon at all costs. There is a lack of personal attention at AKS. The stylist/owner whom I went to is less skillful then the one I am going to now at John Barrett. I walked out and I totally didn't feel like I had a haircut. The "style" he gave me was so bland and not modern that my friends didn't even think that I went for a cut. The hair washer also got water all over the place and I left with my shirt wet. For $ 175, you can do a lot better. more

I love Salon AKS because they have all the style you expect with a Madison Avenue salon with the attitude. The people who work there are wonderful. The stylist and colorist do the best haricuts and color. They are up on the latest trends and are able to give a cut or color that suits your personality and makes you feel and look chic. In addtion, they give you the best head massages when the wash your hair. You can't go wrong at Salon AKS. more
