ediocre is the way I would sum up this place. I started with my side of refritos. My thinking is that if the beans are good, everything else that follows cant be too bad. The opposite also holds. Theres a certain taste that a lot of chain restaurant refritos have. There must be a supplier of boring, canned refritos. Maybe owners of these chains think the beans are secondary to the main course. No way! Beans are a necessary compliment, and the better the beans, the better my experience. I knew it was over for Abuelos after the first bite of refritos. I had a combo plate: a machaca burrito (menu calls it shredded beef so as not to confuse the gringos), an enchilada, and tamale. None of these were particularly interesting, and they deserve no further comment.
