Editorial review from Citysearch 10/14/2013

This use to be a lovely place to have cocktails with friends. Recently the staff has been inattentive and more concerned with self image than customer satisfaction. The last 2 times I have attended were less than expected. A few months ago I walked in with a group a 3. What we walked into was to two 40+ something ladies dancing on the bar, as club music was playing. It appeared to be someones birthday, but It reminded my wife of something resembling a dirty strip club so we abruptly left. (I liked the place so I didn't right the place off, for one evening).\r \r A group of my friends decided to celebrate a friends birthday at this establishment on a Friday night. We were a group of ~15, seated outside in the patio. It was hard to get noticed for service inside at the bar. There were approximately 15 customers at the bar and 4-5 tables outside. So, I presumed the bartenders were busy and waited pleasantly for my turn. I noticed a few times waiting for my drinks to be prepared by the male bartender took longer than average because he was focused on talking some people at the end of the bar. Later, more of the same, the male bartender showed little to no care for the customer, which is not necessarily unusual for a busy bar. Had that been the end of my night, I would not be writing this lengthy review. The last we put in I noticed the dancing. The male bartender was entertaining the same people at the end of the bar, and I now assumed they were his friends. If the bartender is busy, I am ok to wait. But if the bartender doesn’t have time for me because he is dancing like a fool to entertain his friends, I get upset. I received my drinks and back went outside. My friend said he was drunk and had been doing shots all night. A short time later, my friends and I decided to retire as it was close to closing time, and I got up to grab my check. \r \r When I got to the bar to ask for my check I noticed my friend had my credit card. We quickly realized all the checks were incorrect and he was giving credit cards to the wrong people (lucky mine went to a friend). I had to stop the bartender from dancing to an 80’s song, to have him try to fix this. To which he answered “What’s your problem?” Not in an aggressive tone, but with an arrogant one. It took 3 attempts to explain to him that he charged my card for my friend’s bill. He said, “ok,” and started to fix it. He stopped and danced some more; then he got our checks. The bartender was clearly drunk. I chose to leave a 12% tip due to the horrible service. When we walked outside, and my friends and I were getting up to leave. Then the most appalling thing happened. The bartender ""crashed"" out of the back door and yelled at us “Who gave me a s*** tip?"" I tried to explain his service wasn't optimal and he should have received less, and that this is not the way to handle situations. He then threatened us with violence and told us he would ""F*** us up if we didn't leave"". He scared the girls pretty bad, and we swore of the bar. He continued to follow us out into the parking lot. However, as we were non confrontational, he lost his desire to fight and returned inside.\r \r Before I wrote this message I tried emailing the owners and received no reply. It is sad that a once quaint place turned into a hostile place that cares little about service. Go if you like but be prepared for violence if you do.\r \r Shocking and Appalling more

All the awesome places don't have signs 3/1/2010

It's dark. And classy. Not in a modern, trendy, hipster way but in a classic, tiny, locals, dark wood .... with no sign way. They do have absinthe. I love the Hemingway's Revenge [absinthe and champagne]. But I return time and time again for the caipirinhas - a brazilian cocktail similar to a mojito [but better]. And this isn't your average 'bar food.' My faves are the lamb tacos and the garlic and brie quesadilla. The sliders are also fabulous when they have them. They open at 5 and I get there as close to 5 as I can. I hear it gets pretty crowded with a late night crowd. I wouldn't know - I'm usually in bed before 'late night' hits. So look for the sign for Bowl, park in the lot and look the old wood door around the corner from Bowl. Pros: caipirinhas, lamb tacos, absinthe, decor Cons: late night crowds, happy hour, no sign more

Give it a wack. 9/14/2009

I went with a small group and it was outstanding. I read all the other reviews and ppl keep saying its too expensive. Look the fact of the matter is your paying for the enviorment and service you receive both in my opinion are outstanding. The staff was very friendly and the word delicious. Not to mention the largest selection of absithe I've seen since my travels throughout Europe. I personally loved the place and I would without a doubt recommend it to others. more

Only the Hipest of the Hip 3/31/2009

I've been going to Absinthe for many years... sometimes by myself, sometimes with a huge group of people. It doesn't matter when you go, weekday or weeknight, the staff is friendly and energetic and they add to the stigma of the ambiance. The music is out of this world, sometimes you walk in and they are playing Michael Jackson's Thiller and other times they are playing something amazing that you've never heard before. Anyone that gives this place a bad reveiw was either 1. Rude and obnoxious to the staff or 2. Just too damn pretentious to enjoy a small lounge that could get a bit crowded and has to wait for a drink OMG. Just sit back, relax and enjoy... and you will not regret setting foot into this Houston treasure. Pros: Friendly staff Cons: Nothing!! Everything is perfect! more

THEY RIP YOU OFF! 12/15/2008

I've been twice..and it was two too many times for me. Pros: Ambience however not worth it when not being treated with respect Cons: Bartendar/Owner jacks up the prices when he feels like it and is RUDE! more

NOT RECOMMENDED....DON'T GO!!!! 7/26/2008

Hated it!!! Dont go....not worth it...expensive drinks and it seems unclean....the bathrooms are nasty. Also the waitress and the bartender are rude. Not good for groups either....the place is small with not many places to sit... The waitress thinks she can commit everything to memory...but screws up the order every time....not to mention questionable billing...NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!... more

Best Martinis! 7/18/2008

This place is wonderful. It is dimly lit and has great music, comfortable couches, and the best martinis I have ever had. Try the chocolate won't regret it. It is a great place to hang out with friends - and a very romantic place for dates. Pros: martinis Cons: nothing I saw more

Didn't feel it. 7/12/2008

I just finished watching a play Friday night, and wanted to have a drink and meet friends out at Absinthe Brasserier. I was wearing Calvin Klein shorts with a polo shirt. The door guy (who looked like he never left the 90's) was wearing all black which looked fated and a black shirt that was tucked out. He then went on to tell me that ""It is Friday night, and no shorts are allowed"". I thought to it's a July Friday night IN HOUSTON at 11 P.M. and it's still 90 degrees out, and this doorguy rather turn a patron away (who was in the mood to drink alot), than get the establishment business. I phoned my friend who was inside the bar and explained to him what had happend. He found it strange because he informed me that he just saw a guy in the bar with shorts and a cap. That to me was funny...thinking this doorguy was loving his power. WAKE're in Houston, TEXAS. LOL. My friends later told me as they made their exit from Absinthe Brasserie that it was a little sketchy as well. Pros: Nada Cons: read my review more

Satisfies every time 6/13/2008

I go have drinks 4-5 nights a week, and this place is great with business associates and work happy hours because the menu has nicer selection of pizzas, panini sandwiches, hummus, etc,,,,,,,respectable menu for a lounge and better than ""bar food."" Pros: location more

Great Atmosphere, Great Food, Great Service 5/2/2008

My best friend and I went to Absinthe a couple of weeks ago. The place was pretty busy, but the bartender made us feel very welcomed. He even unreserved some space for us so we could sit down and eat some of their delicious food. Even the customers were courteous. Two gentlemen saw we had food and offered their barstools so we could eat with a bit more comfort. The Antipasto platter was huge with delicious and fresh ingredients. The Pizza was by far one of the best in the city. The crust has a slight sweetness to it that I can't place, but it is certainly original and scrumptious. For a cocktail I had a cajun martini. It was zesty for sure. Don't drink it if you plan to make out latter. It has some fantastic tasting, yet pungent ingredients. the music is great. It is very entertaining watching the bartender double as the DJ. (I love Ipod technology) Pros: comfy seating, great service, great food, fun place to lounge without being to fancypants Cons: please put a bench out on the smoking patio. I am lazy. more

Amazing Food, Classy but Relaxed Atmosphere, Interesting Drink Choices, Great Bar Attitude 4/12/2008

I just cannot possibly say enough about the phenomenal menu choices. The anti-pasta plate was not only tasty, but it had such a wide selection of meats and cheeses. The melon, olives, grapes, pecans, almonds, and crostini perfectly paired with the 6 selections of cheeses and 6 varieties of meats. Simply delicious. Then came the pizza. We ordered a very simple Basil/tomato/Mozz pizza, but what we received was anything but simple. The crust was the perfect texture and thickness for the toppings. The crust had a slightly sweet flavor to it, which paired well with the pesto sauce. more

My Tab was overcharged too! 2/21/2008

My tab was over charged too! I have to agree with a couple of reviews on that.. I thought it was a mistake, but now it doesn't seem like it.. Also the rude bar tender I kind of agree with it... Apart from that, I thought the place was nice. A cosy place for preparty .... more

LOVE this place 2/14/2008

A friend showed me this wonderful place on night and I'm glad I came. It is small, so you need to get there early so you get a seat. Great drinks, although a little pricey, and great pizzas (pricey as well). Beautiful decor, nice looking people. I feel like it's a hidden and not too crowded. LOVE IT! Pros: Martinis and the signature absinthe Cons: Drinks are pricey, not much parking. more

Absintium Artemesia,Sublime, austere, no cliche, RUM & COKE 8/17/2007

***The actual cross-street is GREELEY; if you're at Rosewood, you've passed Absinthe- gone too far*** Pros: all pros Cons: no cons more

Wonderful upscale clandestine lounge 7/16/2007

We'd heard fabulous things about this place and sought it out. We drove by it 3-4 times before we finally found the place, hunting for the castle-like double doors. Gorgeous french-style decor and soothing ambiance inside this cozy lounge. We chose the best mojitos we've ever had and warm goat-cheese and red pepper quesidillas to start. Then ordered another round of those killer Mojitos and delicious herb chicken, pineapple with cilantro pizza to-die-4! For dessert we braved shots of the Absinthe and the owner lit our glasses up with a flaming sugar cube! So, from what i remember anyway, we had a marvelous date night and plan to return as soon as we can! Pros: Romantic, relaxing, delicious drinks, exceptional food, warm host, secret lounge more

Don't go here.... 1/26/2007 that it remains a great place that no one knows about! I have grown to just love being at this place. The drinks are fantastic, the bartender remembers my husband and I, and the place really circulates air enough that you are not bothered by smokers. I read through the reviews and agree with all the positve ones and love the negative reviews. I prefer people not wear ball caps where I just paid $8 for a fabulous drink. I grew up in the South and was raised that men take their hats off when they go inside anyway. So, I think that is fair. And I also prefer that anyone who is not sure if the bar is gay as a reason to not go, do just that. Please don't go here. Leave our wonderful Montrose to those of us that adore every aspect of it. Pros: Hard to find Cons: Sometimes people find it that shouldn't more

Watch your tab 1/16/2007

I used to like this place until I was overcharged on my tab. The bartender admitted to the mistake but never fixed it for me. After phone calls and visits to the bar to remind him of the mistake, the tab was never changed-- even after twice telling me it would be taken care of . Worst of all, when I called he acted like I was wasting his time and even hung up on me. At first I thought it was a mistake, but now I think it was an easy way to scam me. If you must visit this bar, I'd use cash only and check the bill, otherwise their are plenty of other great bars in Houston. more

great bar food! 9/20/2006

Absinthe is a great bar for people watching, eating some great bar food and having a good drink. Ralph the manager makes everyone feel welcome! I like the ambience! Absinthe is a very upscale but friendly place to relax and enjoy a drink. I would recommend it to anyone. Pros: The service, the atmosphere, the food and drinks! Cons: hard to find more

Couldn't disagree with Ginger more! 8/9/2006

I thought the bartender was especially friendly! Very welcoming and explained the menu items in good detail even though he was pretty busy all alone at the bar. I've already recommended the place to dozens of friends, but I like the fact that it's hard to find... keeps the snooty, hard-to-please people out. Pros: Out of the way, great food, fun drinks. Cons: No signage, but that's actually a pro. more
