Over Hyped; Over Priced 11/4/2006

I had read all of the glowing media reviews of 1 N Belmont and had very high expectations. I did read the one negative review on Citysearch but frankly dismissed it as a patron disguntled because they had forgotten about his reservation. Unfortunately, his review was far more accurate than the media hype. The service was detached at best and condescending at worst. The food was mediocre; two of us had to return our dishes (the lobster) because they were completely unacceptable, rubbery with a strong metal taste. The appologies were half-hearted and, while the replacement dishes were acceptable (scallops), they were undistinguished in my opinion. We also noticed that two other diners returned their dishes as well. I can honestly say I have been to many restaurants throughout the world and have never witnessed four dishes being returned in one dinner sitting. The desserts were acceptable(chocolate mousse and the chocolate souffle) but the bill was presented before the coffee was served and the coffee service was very disorganized. In fact, the service was uneven throughout the evening. None of this is acceptable for a restaurant that commands these very high prices. There are many restaurants in the Richmond area that are far superior in food quality and service and are not nearly as high priced. I would not recommend this restaurant. Pros: Charming decor Cons: Indifferenct service, poor quality control, price more

Eat here if you like snotty waiters and sitting on the john for days... 9/23/2006

Not one thing went right at this place. We made a reservation 2 weeks in advance and when we arrived they had no record of it. In hindsight, I wish they didn't make room for us, but they did get us seated within 30 min. However, it was like an oven in the place-- seriously probably 85 degrees. We sat down and waited another 15 min before our waiter came over to greet us. He handed us the wine list consisting of about 30 wines-- all except 5 were from France, and all were obscenely overpriced. We took at look at the menu and the prices were absurd-- that didn't bother me as I'd heard good things about the place and it was a special occasion. My wife and I sat there another 15 min and listened to the waiter tell 2 other tables about specials before he came to our table and just looked at us-- after about a min of awkward silence he then asked if we were ready to order. Keep in mind he didn't tell us about any of the specials, nor take our wine order. And, that was about as nice as he got through the whole meal. I understand this is a French restaurant, but this guy was about the rudest and worst waiter I've ever had. The escargot's were terrible, but the Waldorf salad was pretty good. The Dover Sole was average, at best and the ""sushi-grade"" tuna was bright pink and hardly sushi-grade. That may be evidenced by the fact that both my wife and I have been sick for the last 24 hours. The cheese plate was good, though, and by far the best part of the meal was the coffee. Basically, anything that the chef didn't have to prepare was great-- cheese and coffee. Honestly, for $230 I'd rather have 25 meals at McDonald's-- and I HATE MCDONALDS. At least there I don't have to deal with a snooty waiter and be sitting on the toilet for 24 hours afterward. Buyer beware-- THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE! Pros: The coffee Cons: Snotty waiter, food highly overrated more
