Above Average Food at a Below Average Price 7/8/2005

Angelina's is a Lewisville mainstay. The Tex-Mex food that they serve is certainly above average in tastiness. Beginnings: Angelina's has the 2nd or 3rd best salsa I've ever tasted (and I've had plenty of salsa!). It is just hot enough to bite you, but not enough to keep you away. It is served at room temperate and there are plenty of onions, tomatoes, spices, and jalepenos for the average salsa fan, but the extra cilantro really adds to the overall flavor. The chips are either on or off. At times they're cold and cardboard-like. Luckily, the majority of the time they quickly arrive at your table warm, salted, and full of crispy goodness. Both salsa and chips arrive almost immediately to keep you occupied as you look through the plentiful menu. Drinks are serve in large glasses that usually do not require too many refills. The food also comes out hot and ready to eat. I have never been served cold food at Angelina's. The wait staff tend to be too busy to socialize with their tables, which is fine with me. They tend to be attentive and take care of your needs before you have to ask for them. My only complaint is that every once in a while my wife and I will wait a matter of minutes (around 5) before we are greeted by a waiter. The salsa and chips are usually enough to keep us quiet, but some improvement in this area is needed. The food: I usually order the fajitas. Like I mentioned above, they come steaming to the table. Never a quiet skillet is delivered to your spot! The tortillas are not homemade, but they suffice. The side items: sour cream, guacamole, pico, rice and beans are always tasty and only add to the chicken. The fajita meat itself is served on a sizzling skillet over onions and green peppers. These fajitas are not up to the level of Pappasito's, but, then again, no one's are. These are good fajitas that are made better if you add some of their salsa into the tortilla!!! You'll have a hard time finding anything better at this price. My wife usually orders either their quesadillas or the fajita nachos. Both plates have a nice presentation with the guacamole, sour cream, and pico on the side. The plates are usually warmed to keep the meal warm as well. The beef fajita meat used for both the nachos and the quesadillas is excellent! It is usually tender and spicy. I would order it for my fajitas as well, but I'm just a sucker for a good chicken fajita. Endings: Desert is never offered. You usually have to ask for the menu back if you are interested in the assorted Mexican deserts. The flan is excellent. It's got the right amount of caramel sauce and a touch of some sort of liqueur. It's firm, but not completely solid and the creamy goodness is enough to make you order a 2nd and maybe 3rd one. The check usually has to be asked for. The local patrons make a habit of hanging around and talking after eating so the wait staff has learned not to bother their guests until they are ready to leave. You do not pay your server, you pay the cashier near the entrance where some other delectable confections are sold. By the way, the owner of the restaurant once handed me a free confection (a solid-sweet-caramel-milky desert) after I had told him that I had never had one. Gratis! he said and just asked me to try it and let him know next time if I liked it. What a great guy. Angelina's certainly isn't in the same ballpark as other Texas Tex-Mex giants like Papasito's or Uncle Julio's, but their prices aren't either. Overall you can expect above average service, above average food, and below average price. 4/5 stars!!!!!! more
