Mex Restaurant 5/7/2006

MEX 295 Alexander St. Rochester, NY 14607 (585) 262-3060 Walking up to Mex I got a little sentimental. This used to be Crème de la Crème where I asked my senior prom date to be my boyfriend (which lasted 2 months) and where I discovered my love of fabulous desserts(still going strong). Walking in through the throngs of people on a Friday night, I found it to be a great mix. I always like a place that can attract 20 something’s and their parents and still have a great atmosphere. We first grabbed a few Guinness ($4.50) at the bar. For the crowd, it wasn’t too long before we were sipping away. Why didn’t we try the Mexican beer? Well, I didn’t think about it until halfway through the first drink. The SO indicated he should have really tried the El Destructo Ale. After chatting with some friends outside, we decided we were sufficiently starved and ready to eat. Walking up the stairs to the restaurant portion, we were enthusiastically greeted and promptly seated. One thing you will notice throughout Mex is these great murals. They are everywhere depicting Mexican life. The one I thought was pretty interesting was the day of the dead couple. From what I understand now thanks to Google, the Day of the Dead is a pretty festive event remembering and celebrating the dead, and the continuity of life. Our server greeted us promptly and we put in another round of beer. We had some salsa and tri-colored chips. Now before I go any further, I must say that Mexican is hard for us to eat and enjoy. The SO has lived in Southern California, Texas and we both have lived in Las Vegas. That means we had the opportunity to eat a lot of Mexican. Move out of those areas and the interpretation of Mexican can be interesting. I found the salsa to be okay with a tangy taste instead of the hotter mix I enjoy. We placed our order and I decided to try one of the specials, Chicken Chimichanga ($13.00) while my SO ordered 2 Cheese Enchiladas ($11.00). We bypassed the appetizer and dessert this go round (I promise to not let that happen very often!) Our food was delivered hot and fast. I tore into the Chicken Chimicanga. I found the deep fried tortilla perfect, the chicken tasty but was a tad disappointed at the lack of spice to bring it all together. It was still good, and definitely filling. With a side of black beans and sour cream to finish it off, overall I enjoyed my dish. My SO found the enchiladas not too bad. That was his exact words. Going forward I will do a small taste test myself. They used plain rice, and topped the enchiladas in an enormous amount of cheese. The portion looked substantial and included black beans and sour cream. I would come back to Mex, just to have another look at the murals and this time actually drink some Mexican beer. The food could use another taste test. Eat Out Rochester: http://eatoutrochester.blogspot.com/ more
