The Quad Cinema is a great little independent theater that features high quality independent and foreign films, most of which will give you more of your $10 worth than the cookie cutter big budget movies at the chain theaters.
The marquee is usually a nice combination of documentaries, foreign films and independent American projects, and you can count on the Quad to choose the best of the best, so don't be scared to try a movie that isn't advertised on the side of half the buses in the city.
The theaters and screens are smaller compared to the huge arena theaters, but since the films tend to appeal to your brain as opposed to your adrenal glands, it's not great loss.
The best part though, an audience with enough respect for the films that they don't talk through the whole movie.
