Great place to design your own desk. They have various panels and sizes, a couple of finishes, different legs to choose from.
I've bought three desks, two huge custom ones. Not as inexpensive as you might think, but relatively high quality.
A nice place to pick up a desk if you live nearby. They also deliver.
The people are relatively friendly. Also have other household items -- chairs, stools, hampers, etc.

A fine selection of music and an atmosphere that is fast becoming a rarity. Call it brash and opinionated, call it friendly -- call it what you want, but at least you have company when you shop and not the amazonian silence and individual cyber-bubble.
This is a great place to spend a rainy afternoon, and its fun to visit too.

The prices at this store border on outrageous. There is a wide selection of housewares and it is nice that it's not a chain. But each item is almost double what one would expect, and there is an overall feeling that beneath the cantabridgian atmosphere there is shrewd economics going on -- which is fine. But this is not a bargain store or close to it, even though its jumbled aisles strive for that appearance.
I would be certain to research on line before coming here unless you are buying something small.
Also, many other places in the neighborhood for this sort of stuff.
That said, a fun browse.

Over the years as the market has dried up for the written word, this newsstand has scaled back some of its offerings.
Formerly, its eponymous offerings were almost intergalactic in scope, and it was fun to peruse the newspapers from all over the world.
Now there's less out of town news. But still, probably the best selection of periodicals. Both outside and in.
This is also a time-honored meeting spot. "I'll meet you at Out-of-town news."
You can browse while you wait for your tardy dates.

There is a nice old-world feel to the paperman outside. And there is a huge selection of magazines.
More of a local place than the newstand across the street -- out-of-town news.
Required stop on any visit to H. Square.

The atmosphere is elegant and a little intimidating. There are some very expensive watches here. Rolex, Tag, etc. Not an enormous low-end, but some options definitely.
Nice when asked about repairs. Seem very knowledgeable.
A pleasant experience.

There is fun stuff to look at throughout. Kind of like a The Way Things Work book, but in a hotel.
Large, airy ambiance. Large lobby. Friendly staff. Quiet rooms with rather industrial views of industrial Cambridge.
Nerdy-hip.

Atmosphere of a swiss lodge designed by a german modernist. Sunken feeling to lobby, rooms are relatively simple. Hotel is cool architecturally. But there is no grand luxury feeling. Parsed down minimalism with warming touches of wood. Some good restaurants. The sunday brunch at Henriettas table is spectacular.
Quite expensive. If coming to visit a harvard student, you may want to stay in boston -- more to see and do and not too far away.
Interviewers often stay here. (to recruit harvard business and law students)

But there's nothing really boston-y about it. Why not stay in B. Hill somewhere if you've bothered to come to the city?
If you are a rich elitist hipster, this may be the place for you. Liveried hipster staff.
But if you want low overhead, you can find something that does not whisk you away to elitist la la land.

This beautifully renovtated hotel is relatively new. It is steps from the Boston Common and Public Garden. Located on Charles St. in the heart of beacon hill.
If you have guests coming to Boston, I'd recommend considering this place as it gives you the feel of living in B. Hill. Nicer than the titanic hotels like the Westin, which are not in a walking-friendly part of town.
If you're visiting Boston, I'd consider it. Especially if you like to walk around and would prefer not being in a mega-hotel.
