New ""Mom and Pop"" are saviors of this classic Southern grill. 2/21/2009

A neighborhood institution since 1934 and owned by the Cooper family for most of the last fifty years, the Acadia Grill is a no frills, blue-collar, Southern home-cooking diner of the first quality. This had not always been the case after Ruth Cooper's retirement several managers ago....but new managers since November 2009 (husband and wife team, Larry and Tina) have breathed new life into this little unpretentious Mom&Pop spot. Huge portions, low prices, exceptionally good coffee and pleasant service. Open from 6am to 3 pm M-Sat.. Don't miss the Salmon Cakes and eggs, marinated pork chops, fried chicken or yam souffle. The French toast is the best I've had in Winston-Salem and the enormous grilled chicken sandwich is incomparable....especially at $2.85 ! Did I mention REAL mashed potatoes?\r \r The smoking section has been wisely relocated to a side room which also features a big screen television for those who enjoy such things.\r \r Larry is a man eager to please and listen to customer suggestions. City workers, mechanics, carpenters, police officers and retirees mingle with students from the nearby N.C. School of the Arts. This is one of the friendliest spots in town and some of the best diner food for the price. Pros: Great food, not too crowded, diverse clientelle, bargain prices. Cons: Televisions can be annoying at times. more
