I have been to a LOT of Japanese restauarants. Some are just so-so, some are me-too, and others same-old same-old. There are a very few who stand out as different, unique, and eye-opening.
I was introduced to Gombei by a buddy who's wife is Japanese. I was expecting just another sushi boat kinda place though.
What I found was very real, very down home, what your mom would cook for dinner if you lived in Japan kind of food. Udons, rice bowls, Japanese comfort food. Very GOOD Japanese comfort food. And the portions are incredible. This is a GREAT place, especially if your going for a date or business lunch - one where you want Japanese food, but loath the awkwardness of talking while ripping apart a too-large California roll with your teeth and fingers.
Food is above expectations, and flavor is incredible. Prices are quite fair for the portions and taste, and the decor and layout is very professional. For a business lunch, the room is relatively easy to converse in, even with a full crowd (rare nowadays). The only caveat is parking. Street parking is VERY highly recommended. Parking in back poses the risk that your car can get boxed in inadvertently.

I just went here for the first time and I will be back. We had a great time and loved the concept since there isn't anything like it in the area. It is similar to fondu, but you only you are grilling your food. So you get to cook it how you like it. They have the best kobe steak and sake too.

I have been going to Su Hong for so long it is hard to remember going anywhere else in Menlo Park. If you like spicy food, especially Hunan and Szechwan, this is a great spot. They are very attentive in their presentation and always make sure the meat is trimmed and the vegetables cut perfectly. Try the eggplant in garlic sauce and the
General's Chicken or the spicy green beans and meat, they're all delicious.

I recommend that you try Dashi for gourmet sushi at a surprisingly affordable price. The food is good, but the various types of sushi rolls themselves look stunning and are served on beautiful dishes. Their ingredients are always fresh. At some places, the fish smells like it's been in the fridge for a week (some restaurants use frozen fish). Never at Dashi. Try their Dragon roll, my personal favorite, and a salad. However, the other rolls on their menu are very good and are worth a try. Workers are friendly and courteous and the place is clean and cozy. You will be glad to have found this gem, which is easy to do. Take the Willow exit off 101 and go straight down Willow Road until you see Jack in the Box on your left. Dashi is right behind it.
Pros: Reasonable prices, Great service, Easy to find

One of my favorite Japanese restaraunts in the Bay Area. Have dinner here and walk the 20 feet to The Guild for a good independent movie, or across the street to the legendary Kepler's book store.
Pros: Fresh Sashimi, Fresh Sushi

Ten Fu will never fail you! Didn't mean to rhyme here! I was a loyal customer of Ten Fu since 1989, but I've moved to the Sacramento area in 2003. We only patronize Ten Fu when we come back to the Bay Area. Organic? Wow. Even better.
Pros: Long time, popular establishment of Menlo Park. Food is fresh, not greasy. Service is warm.
Cons: Hm. Parking is scarce. But, I hope Ten Fu doesn't move!

Although there is nothing in particular to rant and rave about in this restaurant, there is nothing to complain about either. The wait-staff was attentive yet reserved - which I find is the norm for Japanese cuisine. The sushi rolls were very good, the tempura was excellent, and the prices were average. The environment and vibe itself was very relaxed and cosy. All in all a solid find.
