These folks are great -- I had to get a small order of helium balloons for a picnic which is only 2 days away, and they were happy to accomodate on short notice, and for only a $35 order. Great service, and the balloons were great too.

The Menlo Park Goodwill store is the perfect place to find a wacky halloween costume or a cool vintage piece for non-vintage prices. This Goodwill store realizes that their upscale Menlo Park clientele is an entirely different demographic from most Goodwill shoppers, and stocks the store accordingly. There are often interesting, unique hardgoods (vintage album collections, real silver flatware) and their costume selection for Halloween can't be beat. (Note: I would wash any Halloween costume before wearing it :-)

Dancer's Loft is a pretty good dance store. To be perfectly honest, I prefer Dance Attire, but Dancer's Loft still isn't bad. It is a little cheaper than Dance Attire, but doesn't have such big of a selection. Sometimes, they don't have your size, and you have to wait a month for them to order and receive that item. The place itself is small, much like other dance stores. I recommend this dance store if you live in the area.

This is a nice little dance store that is owned by a VERY good studio in Menlo Park, The Menlo Park Academy of Dance. You can find basically anithing a dancer needs. Pointe shoes, leotards, tap shoes, jelly toes, ribbons, costumes, many different types of jazz shoes, ballet shoes, lyrical shoes, ballroom shoes, etc etc etc. It is really pricy so sometimes I find that I would rather order their products onlinne from another company. But t is a good place to go to check out all the gear since they have everything.

Having been around for better than fifty years, and having been started by a local family (the son oversees it's now) if you're into books and live on the peninsula then you've either heard of or visited Kepler's. It a large bookstore, that had stayed true to it's independent roots. It has wonderful esoteric sections, a knowledgeable and quirky staff (as only book and music stores can!), plus is conveniently located right on El Camino Real (right near the Menlo Park Caltrain station). The children's section is great, and the store hosts lots of author events and special promotions, including it's Harry Potter extravaganza.

Everyone I am very sorry that I messed up this review earlier. I confused the two pet stores in the area. This one isnt actually a pet STORE. They sell pet supplies like food and toys an houses for all kinds of pets. But what this place is really known for is the animal rescue part of it. On the weekends you can come in a look at some of the kitties they have and maybe even adopt one. They dont really have kittens (some of the cats are actually pretty old here) because they have been rescued. The place gets lots of attention since it is right on Santa Cruz, downtown Menlo Park.

Family-owned local bookstore (began by the father, now run by the sons) that it's easy to get lost in. If you're a book person then the store is a must visit. Don't let the simple facade fool you, as who knows what treasures await you inside. It looks small on the outside, but it's the depth that counts here -- as there are hidden rooms to scout out! Filled to the brim with books of all sorts, you can find whatever your heart desires. The proprietors are fixtures in the local book scene. All sorts of books, ranging in subject matter!

Another upscale supermarket with three locations on the peninsula, it is family-owned. They have a great bakery department and dairy section. The place is full of high-end items, specialty items and imports. And the prices bear this out. It’s a fun store to shop in but I wouldn’t want it to be my only avenue of grocery. It’s a great place for spot shopping, if you’re in the market for something special. It’s known for being in affluent markets, so less expensive items can be found elsewhere. Draeger's bills itself as "the world's premier resource for the finest international foods, wines, gift baskets, cookware, and cooking & wine classes."

More
If you're a newbie knitter with a wad of cash to blow, this is a great place to pick up some novelty yarn-- you know, the kind with little bobbles and ribbons and sparkles-- for your first scarf. If you've ever knitted a sweater, you'll want to go elsewhere. The way they organize their yarn - by color - is spectacularly un-useful, and each bin will have only two or three balls each of widely differing yarn types. They don't carry many of the basic quality brands, and the one time I asked about a particular type they promised to let me know when it came in and then never got back to me. One of the employees is also quite rude.
I highly recommend Knitting Arts in Saratoga. It's a trek from Menlo Park, but well worth the time.
