Wheelers’ Campground is a great place to camp. My husband and I generally stay at state campgrounds when we camp. The first time we stayed at Wheelers' because Devil's Lake State Park was full. But now, anytime we go to Devil’s Lake, we stay at Wheelers’ Campground. The sites are spacious and well maintained, the bathrooms and showers are clean, and the whole place has a friendly atmosphere. The owners, Lollie and Marc, are particularly friendly and willing to give suggestions on fun activities to do locally.\r \r Also, there is a rock climbing shop right on site. So if you need any last minute gear for your next project, they have that covered too. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 9/30/2012

The owners of this campground are extremely rude. They start with the rudeness and try to intimidate from the minute you enter their property. Search for reviews of their site and you'll find out the truth about the Wheelers. It is a surprise how they are able to stay in business. The campground was dirty and there was trash all over more

Owner Update 5/23/2012

Hello from Lollie and Marc Wheeler! We do have a few rules for the safety of all campers. They are not arbitrary. We ask that everyone register at the office and pay before going out onto the campground, adhere to the 5mph speed limit, do not gather or cut live or dead wood on the grounds, and use quiet voices and no music after our quiet hour at 11pm. It's pretty basic: respect our policies and respect will be reciprocated. Come and enjoy a peaceful camping experience with us next time you visit Devil's Lake! more

Don't Camp at Wheeler's Campground 5/22/2012

The grounds were nicely groomed and the restrooms and showers were clean. These things are expected. Unfortionately this is all I can say that is positive. Two individuals from our party arrived late, which we informed the owner in advance. They arrived and planned on signing in that next morning as we had planned on staying three nights. We didn't see this as a problem. Around 11:00 that night we were confronted by the owner. He was very upset that these 2 individuals didn't sign in. His approach to us was hostle, he came accross ignorent, and our appology and explination wasn't enough for him. I won't be back and wished I had read the reviews. There are plenty of other camping sites where the owners appreciate and respect their guests. This owner showed no respect and didn't appear to know or understand how damaging this behavior is to a business. more

Beware, owner has an attitude 5/21/2012

When our group of ""senior"" bicyclists (most in our 60's) decided to get together for a weekend of biking and hiking, we thought Wheeler's Campground would be the ideal spot. The campground location is great with access to some wonderful biking back roads. Two of our group got in late and just came to the reserved sites the first night. We were staying for 3 nights so they thought that they would check in early the next morning. No big deal. WOW!! BIG DEAL!!!! Mr. Wheeler came unglued at our site at 11pm. We should have checked out the reviews. We were honest, calm and apologetic but he just would not let up. Mark Wheeler was totally confrontational and rude. After reading other reviews, I see a pattern. There are other places to stay. We will not be back. more

Be carefull of Mark! 5/21/2012

Mark and Lollie are the owners. Mark must have some mental things going on! Mark is very scary. Very well kept-up but don't let that fool you. I totally agree with all of the bad reviews. If you do stay there try to work with Lollie, but don't forget about ""Mark""! I was at the Wheeler Camp May 17,18, and the 19th. Now I know why their campground was almost emty, when all the others where full. more

PSYCHOTIC OWNERS...DO NOT CAMP HERE 7/16/2011

So much for Communism going out of style. These people are rude and are completely high on authority. Not a good camping experience at all. There are plenty of campgrounds in this area that are cheaper, nicer, more pleasant, and not ruled with an iron fist with the owner creeping around in the woods at night watching you, waiting for you to say something wrong or do something wrong. HORRIBLE PLACE TO CAMP!!! more

WORST CAMPGROUND OWNERS ON THE PLANET. 7/16/2011

We had been camping at Wheeler's Campground for years. The owners have been nothing but rude to us and our children, for no reason other than that they can. They knew that our reservation fell through at Devil's Lake and that is the only reason we ever went to Wheeler's, so the kids could be at least close to the lake. Maybe they resented that? The Wheelers seem like they have a Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde syndrome...sometimes pleasant, but most of the time bothersome & rude. Not to mention the snide remarks from the Mr. about buying our firewood elsewhere. We know many people that they have been rude to...people that enjoy camping and are not party goers, but campers...and to have these self-important hicks be rude to us for no reason is just stupid. more

Great place for families and not for partiers 6/7/2011

I can believe that people really like this place. We went twice last year after we could not get a spot at Devil's Lake SP campgrounds and we were pleasantly surprised by a nice, well-kept place that was perfect for tent campers. We were given a choice of spots, led to our spot, and were treated well. But then again, we followed the well-published RULES. This is their home and they are working hard to make a nice place for everyone. No surprises here at all and yes, our first night, there were some loud folks and wouldn't you know it, the police came later. If you want to party, this is not your spot. If you want to have a great time with your family, this place is great. We had a pouring rainstorm the second time we camped here. The washer and dryer along with the game room were great for beating the rain and keeping the kids busy. Hot showers were awesome! And a playground for the kids when the rain finally stopped. We'll be back this year as I see DL is packed again. more

Won't be back 9/7/2010

My wife and I were politely camping and having a nice trip. Until the owner came to our site at 11 PM and accused us of foraging for wood against his policy. The first night we paid $15 for a wheelbarrow of his wet wood. We then proceeded to purchase drier wood elsewhere. Apparently he didn't like that too much. more

Super Clean! 8/5/2010

I came with a couple of friends to experience Devil's Lake for the first time. We came with two cars and three dogs, total! We got in a little late at night, but checking in was a breeze and the woman was very accommodating. They were very helpful and even had us follow them to our site. We weren't there much during the day, but while we were there the ground were super clean, quiet and the bathrooms were practically spotless every time we went! We had no problems with noisy neighbors, etc. The only thing I can complain about were the mosquitos! I really enjoyed it-super close to the park, and beautiful area. One more thing-make sure you remember to bring s'mores stuff if you want it-we forgot and had to pay quite a bit to for everything at their little shop. Understandable their prices would be a bit high, but whoo! Just remember to bring everything next time and you'll be good to go! more

Owner is confrontational and rude! 6/29/2010

This campground is very nice-clean and updated bathrooms, excellent sites. Unfortunately, the owner was so rude we will never go back. I'm sorry I didn't pay attention to some of these reviews when I booked this trip for my family and our young children. Pros: Great sites, proximity to Devil's Lake, clean bathrooms Cons: Owner confrontational and rude more

A real camper's campground 6/21/2010

The loudest thing at Wheeler's are the birds in the morning! The Wheelers go out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay for those who like to get away, relax and have a true, comfortable camping experience. The Wheelers have put a lot of time, money and effort into creating a place that is above and beyond the typical ""city campground."" If you're looking to whoop it up, this is not the place for you. Those that camp there know the rules and respect them, making it an enjoyable retreat for all guests. We stayed at Devil's Lake State Park a month earlier, and while our first night was quiet, the second night we had some younger people near us that were loud into the wee hours; the rules didn't seem to be respected or enforced. The restrooms at Wheelers are very clean and the sites are large with a wide variety of choices in their sites. We found the Wheelers to be very friendly and interesting people, contrary to some of the other reviews. We never felt like ""old man Wheeler"" was peering through the woods at us! This is a mature camper's campground - don't let the bad reviews sway your decision to stay here! We're looking forward to our next visit to Wheelers. Pros: Clean, quiet, manicured; nature lover's atmosphere Cons: No soap or hand dryers in the restrooms more

Don't like Wheelers? You must have broken rules! 4/3/2010

I'm mostly amused by the folks who give poor reviews of Wheelers. Most of their complaints are simply absurd! I've been a seasonal camper there for many years and have noticed that the people who get upset with the way the campground is run are usually folks who try to get around the rules and then lose their tempers in self-rightous indignation! Yes, the Wheelers are strict about campers adhering to their rules. If they break the rules for one group, they must do so for all groups. Is that so hard to understand? The Wheeler family works hard to keep a clean, well-maintained, and green-friendly campground. I've found them to be nothing but caring and helpful. Wheelers is great! Pros: Wonderful family campground Cons: None! more

Beware old-man wheeler 7/25/2009

The owner will sneak around the woods in the dark and watch you at your camp. Then he will raise hell about things he doesn't like. Stay away from this place. Pros: location Cons: owner more

Great location 6/17/2009

Excellent location for Devil's Lake and well kept camping spots and shower/bathrooms. Not great if you want to party down all night. more

Home Away from Home 6/16/2009

I've been staying at the Wheeler's for 6 years now and I can't imagine staying anywhere else. They are always friendly and helpful (even checking the weather for us and posting it for all campers!). We have easy access to Devil's Lake & Wisconsin Dells from their location. It's a wonderful get away. I especially enjoy being able to take a hot shower! Pros: Family owned business, close to Devil's Lake, running water Cons: Mosquitos more

Fantastic campground 6/16/2009

We have been staying here for over 15 years and they have always treated us well. Strict rules for quiet hours make it a great place to bring the family. Pros: Friendly, clean, close to Devil's Lake more
