Horrible service 3/31/2010

I completely agree with the comment below. This place has great food (typical pub food i.e. burgers and wings) but the server was out of my mind rude. I had to literally bring my glass up to the bar and refill it since she hadn't come by the table in over 15 minutes and I ordered hot wings. When I asked her why she was being so rude, so started complaining about how many other customers were there (there were a whopping 3 of us). Another note is if you like to be looked in the eye when being served don't come here...they hardly say a word and don't accommodate whatsoever. I would recommend this place only if you can get the food for take out and can avoid the horrendous service. If not, I wouldn't recommend it in a million years. Pros: Food Cons: Little to none customer service more

Best pub for miles around! 2/15/2010

I first went to the Playwright shorlyl after it opened back in 2000 and I was hooked. From the excellent Irish pub grub to the Guinness on tap and the smiling (which is something for Miami Beach) friendly staff, there's no better place to spend lazy afternoon talking with one friend or a dozen. It's great for an early dinner too with a menu that has some surprising and delicious items on it at great prices when compared with the surrounding restaurants. In addition, the weekend sees the Playwright become jam packed with happy drunk tourists that are there to have a good time. If you're in the mood for one of those rip-roaring easy pickup joints, this is the time to come. It's also an excellent sports bar with monitors everywhere and a projector at one end with food specials during big events like the Superbowl or World Series. What's not to like? Pros: Food, staff and atmosphere Cons: Washington Ave rent makes it a little more expensive. more

Bad, bad experience at the Playwright 9/23/2008

I hate to say it, but I'm not going back to this place. I went there with a group of 6 (six) and put down my credit card for the first round of shots to celebrate a friends birthday. Over the course of the night others in the group gave their cards to the bartender for drinks and food. At the end of the night, everything ordered was on my tab with the explanation that it was "easier that way." Try working out a $400 tab with people that had left. Caution! The catty and inefficient staff will stun you. Pros: Good wings Cons: Unprofessional and inexperianced staff. more

Playwright is Fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/29/2008

This place is fantastic, I love to go to Playwright, The staff are very friendly & the service is great, the food is amazing, way above irish pub standards!! great place to watch games, cant wait to watch my boyz / the steelers play in sept. Pros: Great place to watch Games more

The best place to meet people! 3/14/2008

My friend who is Miami local took us to Playwrights, it is a great place with a good mix of people. We meet a ton of random people from all over. It is easy to get drinks and the bartenders are really nice. It is much more chill than a lot of places in Miami and was welcome break from the high priced clubs. I would definitely go there again. Pros: Great location, fast service, and great people. more

Gotta Love the PW 9/13/2007

I'm a PW regular - know all of the boys....the girl that everyone keeps referring to below also used to date Mick Jagger's body guard, Adrienne Gard (the Aussie that takes all the crazy fans down during the shows)! I used to see M in pictures with the Stones when they were traveling.......only a real Stones fan would know that- just thought I would share a bit of PW trivia with the Beach!!! -I don't think she knows that I know that....don't tell her that I told you... -LK Pros: It's easily the coolest place on the Beach Cons: None! more

Disagree With Below...Was A Great Superbowl Atmosphere 2/6/2007

I totally disagree with the below comments from some idiot who probably didn't realize that he was in South Beach and bars were going to be chaotic no matter where you were going to be. I am sure one of his drunk friends stumbled out and was giving the bouncer flack. My friends and I were also here all day on Sunday, and had such a great time that we came back on Monday too! The service was great, although the drinks were a bit pricey. It was a great atmosphere for the game....we managed to get a few seats at the bar where this awesome (and gorgeous I might add) bartender Maggie, served us all night. I came back Monday just to see her and that great pub again. Unlike the the comments from below, I would recommend this bar to everyone who ventured down south here to Miami. Thanks for a great weeekend! Pros: Hot Blonde bartender named Maggie! more

Bad Experience 2/5/2007

On Superbowl day, our party was there most of the day, running a tab ,one member of our party went outside and was refused entry by the stupid gorilla bouncers even though his server verified he had a running tab. We will never go back to Playwrights, its off the VIP list as far as we're concerned And we will tell all our friends and every blog we know. more

Atypical for South Beach - Authentic Irish Bar 2/3/2007

Just because you have an Irish name for your bar and serve Guinness does not mean authenticity but this is the real deal. Not only is The Playwright Pub a transplant from Ireland in the decor, it is a greatly refreshing atmosphere from the typical South Beach pomp and club scene. If you are looking for a bar not a night club, it is a good find. Shhhh, don't let everyone know, there will be a line out the door if word gets out. more

Hot Blonde Serves a Mean Pint of Murphys 1/31/2007

This is seriously the greatest bar in Miami. I live in the neighborhod, and frequent the Playwright on a weekly basis. They just hired this new blonde bartender who is the hottest thing I have ever seen! They usually have all mates behind the bar- so whoever hired her....smart move! Anyway, food is good and there are always great matches on the plasma T.V.'s. Highly recommended to people who live in the area who just want a "normal" place to hang out where a total babe will serve them a great pint of Murphys! more

No Guiness!! 12/7/2006

Drink it up.... and forget about everything else.........Buy backs are great in there....Super Staff.....can get expensive towards the end of the night though....this shouldve been a dive bar instead of a Rest/Bar...Lot's of babes in there that like to get liquored up.. OK this is all new.The bar is now too touristy... I found a better one across the street.Much nicer and better beer.Waxy's O conners is the better place for everything . Sorry PlayWright but you guys got way too expensive and I don't feel its worth it. Pros: Once you get to know them you'll be fine Cons: No Guiness and I can never remember how many I've had.. more

Great local joint 11/13/2006

I enjoyed a few late nights at this great spot. The price was fair, the scenery was even better. The music brought the ladies inside, and the prompt service from the bartenders kept the party rockin. This place is just like your hometown favorite, helps to keep you from getting homesick too soon in your vacation. A really fun place to go anytime of the day or night. Pros: Price, service, ladies Cons: none more

MrG 9/9/2005

This is by far the best bar/pub in south Flordia. Where else can you get such a relaxed atmosphere, good looking girls and not get ripped off in Miami. They have great pub food also. This is a must for anyone lookin to have a good time. Pros: Great food, Good looking staff, 6 plasma tvs Cons: none more

A cosy spot for good food 1/30/2003

Ignore the fact that this pub's locale is in the heart of South Beach, once you step through the doors you will leave the busy streets and beautiful people behind. The Playwright has a very cosy and welcoming atmosphere that envelops you. The food was top notch and prices average for engligh/irish pub fare. Try the Bangers and Mash for a real treat, the roast beef was also stellar and if you wanted to try something new order a Shandy - half harp/half sprite straight to you from the motherland Pros: Good Food, Huge TVs for games, average priced Cons: not a one more

laidback kool 10/3/2002

pretty cool, rather laidback hideaway in the middle of one of the craziest, hectic, non-stop, anything-goes places in America. good looking waitresess. more

Owner Message
  • This authentic Irish Pub opened on June 26th, 2000, and is the only genuine Irish Pub on South Beach. The Pub is a remarkable collection of authentic Irish decor. The interior is inspired by pubs the owners grew up seeing on the streets of their native Ireland.

The Pub is an amazing feat of workmanship; the mahogany bar is imposing and impressive. It was made and shipped directly from Ireland to be reassembled here on the shores of Miami. The whole pub has a distinctive European feel. But the overall atmosphere is relaxed and homey. Somewhere to sit and enjoy a pint of beer, of which the selection is large and varied.

There are over 13 draft beers including the best pint of Guinness this side of St James Gate. With 13 plasma and 3 big screen tv's this Irish Pub is a great place to watch all your favorite sporting events including English Soccer, and Rugby!

Editorial
  • In Short
Playwright's furnishings make for a casual, comfortable and classy pub. There's a small stage in the front for live music, a full wooden bar with stained-glass inserts in the backboard and cushy bar stools and tables at several heights for maximum comfort. There are also numerous televisions scattered around for the sports fans. Irish classics like shepherd's pie, corned beef and cabbage, Guinness beef stew, and fish-and-chips fill patrons with the expected meat-and-potatoes diet.
