Best

This hotel is gorgeous! We went here for a business meeting and didn't want to leave! When we walked into our room, we noticed the design - first class. However, the best part was...

Worst

After hearing about the amazing view, I decided that we would celebrate my girlfriend's birthday at Splashes. When we arrived, we were seated promptly at a table with a nice ocean...

Fantastic, well....except no coffee in the rooms 5/27/2011

I loved this place. We had a room on the 6th floor, in the middle of the main tower....beautiful balcony, sound of the waves, fantastic. Everyone was super friendly and nice, and bent over backwards to make our stay delightful. I only give this a 4 for one reason.....there are no coffee makers in the rooms. This is 2011, and there is no excuse for this. The last thing I want to do at 7AM is walk or take and elevator and then walk to where they have free coffee. I travel frequently, in the USA and Overseas, and 8/10 of the time there's a coffee pot. Other than that, loved this place more

Dishonest and Rude Staff 8/27/2010

Due previous problems, we were offered a complimentary room for 2 nights and a reduced rate after that. We accepted their offer and booked a 2-week stay. We checked in to our first room, which was not facing the ocean. This room type is not listed on their website, so we had no idea that our view would be the parking lot. I contacted Pamela Hopkins (assistant to the VP of Hotel Operations), with whom I communicated prior to our stay, and I copied Joanna Bear (assistant manager). I shared with both our frustrations and asked if we would be able to, as we were originally offered, stay in our Oceanfront Towers King (OTK) room for the duration of our stay, since it was available. (The 2 complimentary nights were in an OTK room but the other nights were not.) My first email went ignored; after a 2nd email, Pam said she would look into it the morning of 7-30. Through the evening of 7-29, when I searched for availability online, 4 different oceanfront room types showed up. On the night of 7-29, we asked about availability at the front desk and were told that rooms were still available. But the manager, Lisa Silva, overheard our conversation and immediately told us that no rooms were available, which was a lie. I asked a friend of mine to call reservations the next morning, 7-30, before we stopped down. My friend spoke with Heather, and she told my friend that MULTIPLE OTK rooms were available. 15 minutes later, my husband went down to the front desk and spoke with Tammy, who said that NO OTK rooms were available. Tammy then said that one room was available for all but one day and she and Pam were going to see what they could do. But, a Seaview room came up on the online reservations system without restrictions for the entire range. When we still had not heard from Tammy, we called and were told that we could check into a Seaview room. On 8-1, the front desk manager (Elaine) gave us our key with a smug smile and said, it’s on the first floor. The first floor Seaview rooms have very little view of the ocean (due to the solid wall on the patio) and are perhaps the loudest because of the location directly next to the pool and Splashes. Bottom line: try the Montage, St. Regis or the Ritz, but stay away from Surf and Sand. more

great Hotel! 2/2/2010

This hotel is gorgeous! We went here for a business meeting and didn't want to leave! When we walked into our room, we noticed the design - first class. However, the best part was when we walked onto our balcony... We opened the door (it was in the evening so it was dark out). To our pleasant surprise, we saw the beautiful ocean and the crashing waves - it was RIGHT outside our window! They hotel lit the beach up so you could see it at any time of the day. It's a pricey hotel... but if you have the money - you MUST go! If you don't.. save up for at least one night :-) Pros: Great Views Cons: Pricey more

A few unexpected quirks 8/9/2008

THE GOOD:\r Fantastic location on the beach in Laguna Beach. \r Almost all rooms have unobstructed ocean views.\r The staff, even under high season conditions, was uniformly friendly and helpful. Every request was honored, and honored quickly.\r The food is excellent.\r THE BAD\r No A/C!!! Big problem in July/August. Website doesn't make this clear at all.\r The pool, the bar and the beach are far too small for the high season crowds: way too intense.\r more

Never again 7/16/2008

This is what we got:\r 1. Our room was not ready, so we decided to get some lunch down stairs and than we waited and waited still know room. Than when we inquired about our room, we were told that it would be ready in a few minutes, we continued to wait. Finally we were told that it would be ready in five minutes and we continued to wait.\r \r 2. When we finally got our room it was gross and unacceptable. The carpet was black, the room was dirty, the glasses in the room looked like they were rinsed out placed on the bar for our use with Coke still in them and there was mold growing in the shower. When we brought this to the attention of the manager on duty and she saw the condition of the room, she agreed. \r \r 3. So on the second day of our four days at your resort we had people cleaning our carpet all day and we had to deal with fans in our room and wet carpet while we were getting dressed. At this point of our stay there was nothing that anyone could do to make things better. We were miserable. \r \r 4. I have a brand new Mercedes parked with valet, My seats and mirrors were all adjusted by the valet and because the car is new I notice everything. Someone put at least 50 miles on my car during our stay. It wasn't us. Pros: beach Cons: dirty room more

Yummy! 3/3/2007

You can?t find a better location. If you are looking for an ocean view this is the place to go. The food melts in your mouth. The staff was great. Pros: View, food and service. Cons: Expensive more

REALLY FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!! GREAT EVERYTHING... 2/14/2007

We were really impressed from the moment we drove into the property, the valets are great... Obviously the entire hotel has gone through a renovation process recently because the lobby is very contemporary, not the same look as in the past. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the building right above the sand and we were seated right on time for our reservation. The food was great, our server Jim was excellent, ask for him next time you go..... He stated they hired a new chef recently and the food has been getting great reviews. Do yourself a favor and don't miss this one.....Sit outside, it's warmer under the heaters and the view is unbeatable... Pros: View, Food and Service, the feel of the whole property Cons: tough to get in, reservations only on the weekends more

Nice location 11/2/2006

Great location, good service and food. I would go back to this place again. We really enjoyed the location and a good date place. more

This USED to be our favorite restaurant 5/11/2006

This used to be our favorite restaurant to take guests to, celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, etc. The magnificent view coupled with the (once) exceptional cuisine created a memorable experience for any occasion. Beautiful view but the food was a disappointment. The Lobster was mushy and tasteless. The server exchanged it for their Halibut entree. It did not compare to what we had experienced it in the past. The Lamb entree my husband has enjoyed many times in the past was bland and uncreative in it's preparation. The service used to be impeccable. Now the servers seem rushed and only mildly concerned that there was a problem with the meal. It was a shadow of the former upscale service we had always associated with the Surf and Sand Hotel. The only resemblance to previous dining experiences at Splashes tonight was the crashing of the waves and the large bill after dinner. Pros: View, Location Cons: Entrees, Service more

For your veiwing pleasure only. 11/10/2005

This restaurant is good for a drink as well as relaxing with your pretty dates. The food is very average, nothing inspired or fusion about it. You are paying here for the incredible ocean and beach view only!!! Good for flirting, dating, drink or maybe getting a ocean-view room in the Surf and Sand hotel!!! Pros: Ocean view, Drink, Beach front Cons: food, food, food more

Excellent, but... 7/25/2005

The food is healthy and wonderfully prepared and presented, the view is breathtaking, but when it gets crowded the noise level is so deafening that it completely destroys the experience. Each table has to talk louder than the next one for anyone to hear anything. I cannot understand why they don't improve the acoustics. Go only at off hours, when it is not crowded. Pros: Food, View Cons: Noise, Noise, Noise more

travelodge with a view 6/6/2005

this hotel has no a/c. when you arrive tired from traveling and wanting to settle in, that room has been cooking in the sun and it is HOT. When you open the patio doors, the breeze does not come unless you open the hotel door. There aren't even ceiling fans! Even cheap mexican hotels have ceiling fans. The room does have one big, loud, old, cheap fan, the $9.99 type (not a nice quiet occilating one). This is simply not ok for a hotel that costs as much as it does. We paid $450 for the night. It also did not have a safe or a coffeemaker. That said, the closeness to the beach and surf, and the sunset views from your room while eating excellent room service food actually makes it worth the money, assuming that you can't find a better place for the money, which I don't know... Pros: sunset views, right on beach, food Cons: no a/c, no safe, no coffeemaker more

Great View and Food 2/13/2004

Splashes has really upgraded its menu from years ago. The food is definately worth checking out and the view is incredible. more

Splashes...A Wash Out 3/20/2003

After hearing about the amazing view, I decided that we would celebrate my girlfriend's birthday at Splashes. When we arrived, we were seated promptly at a table with a nice ocean view. Unfortunately, the view is the only thing worth mentioning about this establishment. The service was very slow and ""amateurish."" Expecting the food to be as pleasant as the view, we ordered the Lobster Ravioli and the Prime Rib. The ravioli was bland and the prime rib was forgettable. Since I had specified that this was a birthday dinner when making the reservation, I was told that a piece of cake would be brought out. However, all that was brought to our table after dinner was a bill for a very overpriced dinner. There are nice places to eat dinner and enjoy the view of Pacific Ocean, but Splashes is definitely not one of them. Pros: View, Intimate, On the Beach Cons: Underflavored Food, Bad Service, Overpriced more

Getaway from the Strife 6/12/2002

The Surf & Sand hotel is the only hotel in Laguna Beach that is actually ON the beach. It's a luxurious (and expensive) getaway for Angelenos who need to decompress. The rooms are comfortably furnished and large shutters allow you to leave your balcony doors open to hear the surf but ""shut"" out other guests from your view. The small gift shop stocks local artists and sells souvenirs for the well-dressed traveler. The high room rates will force you to save-up for this stay. Pros: luxury abounds, people pamperers Cons: room rates more
