Best

I read the negative reviews for Grecco's the night before we went, so I was a little nervous about going... especially because it was an hour drive for us, but we had a Living Soc...

Worst

The strongest thing this out landishly pretencious place has going is the chef's over inflated ego.\r The atmosphere and menu is trying way to hard tp impress and be over the top...

What was chef doing back there? 3/11/2012

My husband ordered the pork with Indian seasoning and I ordered the Italian chicken with pasta dish....his pork arrived unseasoned and my pasta was overwhelmingly seasoned with Indian spices! My serving was nearly edible. His bland, but very moist and cooked well.\r Very disappointed. We will go somewhere else next time.\r And will not recommend this place to others.\r 3/9 \r more

Do Not Waste Your Time or Your Money! 2/28/2012

I have been going to restaurants for fifty years and this was the worst dining experience I have ever had. Our waitress was contemptuous leaving us to wonder if we had said something to offended her? Apparently not, as I just read another review complaining about the rude service at Grecco's and naming the same waitress. I have also read reviews about Roman Anthony's, same owner and same complaints. This owner may be a competent chef but is a very poor and unprofessional restaurateur. \r \r We tried the six course sample menu with wine. Some courses including the fresh salmon were exceptional, others were unremarkable to inedible. Wine pairings were also hit and miss and the wine was never timed correctly. The wine steward was the one shining star of the staff she was friendly and knowledgeable about the wine she was serving. Unfortunately we only saw her twice. Desert was an unappetizing blob of cake like stuff served in the bottom of what looked like a soup tureen paired with a horrible Port wine. The food is not great and the protein portions are tiny.\r \r Unfortunately we were not aware of the fact that this is a ""coupon"" restaurant. The prices are at least twice what they should be but they constantly sell half off coupons on Groupon, Living Social etc. We paid full price and I have never felt so cheated. \r \r A strange thing happened when we got our check. The tax on our $173 bill was over $20 or about 12%. I asked the waitress if this was correct and what the tax rate was? She picked up the check and I thought she was going to correct it but instead she just ran my card and dumped it off without saying a word. We spent over $200 and never got as much as a thank you from anyone. \r \r I did call the manager the next day about the tax and was told there was a ""glitch"" and I was charged double on the tax and that it would be refunded. I hope it really was a ""glitch"" and I hope they are refunding anyone else who may have been glitched. \r \r My biggest regret is that I actually left a good tip (I know it was stupid). I was a waiter years ago and have a nasty habit always leaving generous tips even when they are not warranted. \r \r \r Grecco's is a sinking ship, do not get aboard! Their other restaurant, Roman Anthony's has apparently closed without notice and their web sites are both down. I would advise anyone with Groupon or LS coupons to just wait until they are out of business and get a refund. I think it will be a short wait and you will not waste a night out. \r more

Great food, attentive service, elegant ambiance 1/23/2012

My husband and I have visted twice--once the night we got engaged (October 2010) and again this past weekend (January 2012). We ordered the (4 course) tasting menu with wine pairings both times, and enjoyed the selections. While I was a bit disappointed that their Open Table account and their website have both been discontinued since our first visit, my voicemail to make a reservation was successful (if low tech). I didn't receive a confirmation call, which I requested, but when I called to confirm they had reserved our table for the requested time. On our second visit, our service seemed a bit rushed from course to course--the next arriving seconds after the first was cleared. We had experienced a leisurely meal on our first visit, so this surprised us a bit--especially since we had arrived a few minutes early for our reservation. Still, we plan to visit again because we feel that their excellent food and wine are a good value in a fun, out-of-the-city environment. more

Rude Service Raw Pork 12/30/2011

My wife and I agreed Grecco's has really gone downhill since we were there last. Renee, our waitress was so rude we had a hard time enjoying ourselves. I ordered the pork tenderloin and it was served to me raw. I was also served a frozen beer. I have never paid so much to be so disappointed in such poor service and poor food. I have $50 left on the gift certificate we received for Christmas and I probably won't be using it because my experience was not even worth the price of a babysitter. more

Wonderful experience! 7/31/2011

I read the negative reviews for Grecco's the night before we went, so I was a little nervous about going... especially because it was an hour drive for us, but we had a Living Social deal & a gift certificate to use, so we decided to give it a shot anyway & I'm so glad we did! We got there around 9pm & were given a choice of where we wanted to sit. We decided to try the patio, which was beautiful at night, decorated with lights! We decided to split the 6-course Chef's Tasting menu with wine & stayed outside for the first course until it started to sprinkle & then the staff graciously moved us inside to finish out the rest of the meal. / The food was incredible! Throughout the 6 courses, it kept getting better & better! The staff was wonderful & the timing between courses was perfect. - They also split the wine into 2 glasses for us, which was very nice... and gave us very decent portions as well! // I am so glad we gave Grecco's a chance & would definitely recommend it for dinner.-- We will certainly be back, and next time plan to try the 9-course Chef's Tasting Menu! more

Use any coupons ASAP 7/23/2011

My wife and I arrived there for lunch 21 July 11.00 am, nothing was ready including the menu. The staff as we saw it was 1 man, 1 wait staff and 1 woman cradling a small baby and about a 3 yr old by the hand. From the communication we saw, it appeared that the woman was connected to the man who subsecently cooked our lunch (no where was the noted chef) The pecan crusted salmon never had even one pecan, was not well cooked and way overpriced. The wait staff was friendly. From what we experienced I would not recommend Grecco's and would suggest you receem any and all coupons ASAP, it does not appear to have much life left. Kane more

For Sunday Brunch -- Go to Perkins or IHOP Instead 7/20/2011

SERVER -- friendly but slow FOOD -- OK to bad and definitely overpriced ATMOSPHERE - fine, patio would be nice if weather cooperates We arrived shortly after they opened for Sunday brunch. Since we were the only diners for the first 30 minutes , it seemed strange that our server -- who was very friendly -- was so very slow. Our party of 3 pieced together what caused the slow service. The staff were doing prep work after they opened. It seemed as if they had only started prep just before opening. Things we would have expected to be done or nearly done weren't ready when we arrived around 11:15 am. For example, our server told us we couldn't get pasta dishes for awhile because fresh pasta was still being made. Two in our group ordered the french toast. Some pieces were so burned both diners sent them back. This special consisted of 3 pieces of toast with a small sprinkling of nice fresh berries. Bread used to make the toast was low quality-- it was the shape and consistency of Wonder Bread. One person ordered steak and eggs which included fried potatoes and toast. The eggs were not cooked to order but that diner still thought that special was good. Bottom line -- for breakfast or brunch, save yourself some money and go to your local IHOP or Perkins. more

Don't bother!!!!!!!!!!!! save gas/save time 11/7/2010

It is no wonder Grecco's is constantly on the half price dinning deals that most radio stations offer...Why so they can get diners in the door.... I purchased a $50 half price deal in which I received 2 $25 gift certificates. \r It clearly states on the certificates 1 coupon per peson per table my husband and I were dining together at this time. When I gave the certificates to our waitress I was informed I could only use 1... BEWARE PEOPLE YOU CAN ONLY USE 1... Therefore if you live far away and think you can utilize both certificates you CANNOT!!!!!!!!!!\r Making this not a dining deal at all. The interior is rustic and trendy the problem I had is the tables were way to close together not making it intimate at all and I was quite uncomfortable dining. Our waitress was below par and was very dissapointing. If you want steak sauce or salt/pepper good luck bring your own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\r more

Water is good, never got to the food. 10/10/2010

I was originally introduced to Grecco's when I went there for a lunch function with work earlier this year. The food was fantastic and the staff was very accommodating. My wife and I were in the area last weekend and I was thrilled that I had another opportunity to dine there once again. Needles to say how shocked and disappointed we were with our visit. We arrived at Grecco's around 2:00 PM, thinking we would be there after the main lunch rush. There were three couples in the main dining room and more people out on the deck. When the hostess found out that we did not have any reservations, she informed us that there would be a 15 - 20 minute wait to “allow the kitchen to catch up”. When we asked if we could be seated to just have a glass of wine while we wait, she asked if we could go into the bar and wait. In hind-site I that was just a way to get us out of the hallway. Our experience in the bar was no better. We had to ask for a glass of water and we were treated as if we were not even there and we were the only people in the bar. Needless to say we did not stay for dinner because your staff made it apparent we inconvenienced them with our unexpected arrival. Please do your patrons a favor and post a sign, “By Reservations Only”. I know that I will not be back and I am more than happy to share my experience to anyone that will listen. more

Spot On vs. Spotty 9/4/2010

We've been to Grecco's several times. The first time, we were blown away at finding this gem in the middle of nowhere - this chef does know how to cook! We've probably been there 5 times total and it's never lived up to the first. When we tried the chef's tasting menu, way too much emphasis was put on exotic wild game dishes that I didn't care for. The worst experience was when we spontaneously thought we'd go there and the hostess, I kid you not, loudly proclaimed not once but three times, ""THEY DON""T HAVE A RESERVATION."" The place is miniscule and three tables were open. Seriously. We were so uncomfortable. If they can iron out the service so it feels attentive but not overly stuffy, it can be a very good place to have dinner. I think Justin Grecco is extremely talented. We keep going back hoping for the best again. more

Grecco's did not meet expectations 4/25/2010

I had read their website, as well as reviews. The website and reviews sounded like this would be a great place to go, with amazing food. There were four of us for Sunday brunch, we were celebrating an 80th birthday. This was my choice of restaurants, I wanted it to be special. There was one or two other tables besides our table. They were not busy. Two in our party ordered the eggs and steak dish. The eggs were pretty much inedible, the bottoms of the eggs were fried to death. I can make much better eggs at home. The other two meals that were ordered were the eggs, salmon benedict, the presentation was better, the salmon tasted slightly fishy, The food came out of the kitchen ""luke warm"" certainly not hot. \r \r The restaurant is charming and cute. The service was fine. The food was terrible. I am always disappointed, when I'm spending money on something I could have prepared better at home, This was exactly the situation with Greccos. It certainly did not live up to my expectations Pros: charming atmosphere Cons: food was disappointing more

Loved It 1/26/2009

A taste of Europe!! 1/23/2009

What a gem of a restaurant! My daughter and I had the four course dinner with wine last Saturday evening and wished that the evening would never come to an end. The four courses were marvelous, the wines superb, and the ambience delightful. Taja was our server and made the evening very special. Justin came to our table as a final touch to a fantastic evening. I will return with my husband and friends for Valentine's Day dinner and look forward to what I know will be an evening to remember for all of us. I am so thankful that Justin chose St. Croix Falls for his restaurant! Here's to elegance and a menu that is incredible. Pros: Elegant menu, wonderful wines, ambience, and marvelous service Cons: There are none! more

Only the BEST! 1/20/2009

I work with Chef Justin at Grecco's (formerly Dam Bistro) and all that I can say is that he is one of thee most talented Chefs that I have had the oppurtunity to work with and I have worked with many. We both attended the same Le Cordon Bleu in Mendota Heights, MN and I am still seeing new things that I have never seen before from Chef Justin Grecco. With a new menu every week things NEVER get boring or dull. Chef Justin only settles for thee best and you will never see ANYTHING half-assed come out of his kitchen. I am very honored to be working for him and I hope to learn everything that I can from the man. I am not writing this only because I work there. I am writing this because it is my honest opinion as a picky chef. If you enjoy the best, please come and get it! You will not be sorry. Pros: Always something new, only the best ingredients, close and personal, and GREAT food! Cons: No grill :o) more

OverHyped Underwelmed 12/16/2008

The strongest thing this out landishly pretencious place has going is the chef's over inflated ego.\r The atmosphere and menu is trying way to hard tp impress and be over the top. The service was patronizing. The decor on the shabby chic side. I found when the chef came out and ruined our personal conversation to talk about his skills it felt as if he was fishing for compliments instead of welcoming us. It would be nice to a have a local place with good food in place yet another great wanna be. Please stop writting your own reviews and consintrate on basic food. I don't want to read about your bio- come up with something original that you don't have to sell your kids for. This is St. Croix Falls. We know what good food is and don't need the additude.\r David J Pros: It is close by. Did not have to pay for parking. No lines. Cons: uncomfortable ambience, cost, more

Don't miss out on this gem of a restaurant! 11/1/2008

My wife and I were introduced to Grecco's by Troy Chamberlin at the Chateau St. Croix winery. What a find. Chef Justin was as impressive in his delivery and attention to detail as you would find at any five star restaurant. We had the six course tasting menu with the wine pairing and found the diner to be well paired with the wines, and as creative as we've ever had. We felt like the cuisine we enjoyed at Grecco's was of similar caliber as Chef Tim Mckee of La Belle Vie and Solera in minneapolis. This is a place we will visit whenever we are in the area. Congrats on a great job Justin. more

Leery of a top Chef 10/9/2008

I am a little leery if Grecco's on the St. Croix will make it. \r Chef Justin has quite the talent but doesn't have the stamina to see things through.\r I worked with Justin at Bellanote and was amazed at how talented he was and his love for food. However, it immaturity and extra curriculars are those of not a business owner but those of a troubled young adult. He was let go at Bellanote for the extra curriculars and fired at the Afton House for telling them off on a regular basis. \r I hope he makes it and I sure hope that he has cleaned himself up so that he doesn't skim the top off the business and its investors.\r more

Wonderful little gem of a restaurant. What a treat!! 9/17/2008

We are fortunate enough to have the Dam Bistro in our ""backyard"" so to speak. Wow, what a gem!!!! Ever since Justin bought the restaurant, it is absolutely perfect. Justin changes his menu weekly and every time we dine here we are pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is absolutely perfect for a quiet, romantic dinner or a nice dinner with friends. Very relaxing and absolutely wonderful food!! The staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. We had Barbara when we dined there last and she was such a treat for a waitress! The restaurant has an open kitchen and it incorporates into the quaintness of the restaurant perfectly! We have a 4 course menu, with a bottle of wine for about $150 (including tip). Great price for great quality food and service. Justin, the chef and owner, usually comes out to the tables to introduce himself to the guests and make ou feel welcome. We will definitely be back and we are so excited to have such a talented chef so close to home. You will not find a better restaurant anywhere in the area and will have a hard time finding one in the twin cities as well. Try this place, you will definitely be back!!!! more

What fun! 04/04/2012 8/30/2008

Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon, just LOVE fiddle heads saute'd in garlic and butter YUM! Service was great as are the wine selections they suggest with pasta dishes! Pros: Thumbs up, exceptional dining experience Cons: 34 minute drive to get there, hope he opens more in the future! more

Chef Fired. Retaliation ignorant. 8/28/2008

I have good knowledge to know that the review before mine is a lie. He is just upset because he got FIRED from Dam Bistro for being a terrible chef. Really. Would you advertise how bad you are by putting up a review like that. Seriously. That should go on his resume. more
