Good Food and Laughs 9/5/2008

I've been coming here since I was a kid. I am now 31 and this place has changed quite a bit. I always remembered it as the italian ""sports"" restaurant because of all the memoribilia hanging on the walls. I think that was what I loved most, besides the food. That was before they made the ""upscale"" side to the left of the entrance. Over the years, the service has lacked significantly. I recall times eating here and having rude waiters who were always in a rush. I had my bachelor party here in 2006, but the service was great. Perhaps beacuse they had a party of 20? I guess I come back here once in a blue because it brings back memories of when my parents would take me here for birthdays & graduations. If you're looking to do a big party or celebration this is the place. If you want an intimate date with the girlfriend or wife, go some place else. It seems that they cater better to bigger parties than to a partiy of 2. Food portions are generous (chicken/veal parm, manicotti, Lasagna) and always tasty, so you wont go home hungry. I cant give a 1/2 star rating, so I'll give it a 3 1/2 instead of a 4. Pros: Big place, great ambience Cons: rushed service, crowded on weekends more

Tasty food, Awful Service 5/3/2008

I've come here at lunch and for dinner on weekdays and weekends. The service is often rude. At this point in NYC, that's 'nuff said in my book. Try Fratelli's on Eastchester for similar quality with better service and a more intimate feel--not that that's hard given this monstrosity of a restaurant. Pros: Tasty pastas, pizza. Cons: Expensive, wasn't seated within an hour of estimated time. Other times waiter has been insufferably rude. more

Generous portions 2/21/2008

I've been to F & J's a few times and the food has always been delicious. The atmosphere is great and even though you have to look for parking (unless you valet park) it is definitely worth going. My only dislike is that they don't accept credit cards. Who pays with cash anymore????? I would probably go more often if they did but once in awhile will do. Cons: NO CREDIT CARDS more

Great appeziters and entrees. 2/15/2008

The food is great, the appeziters are so good esp. the calamari. Portions are very large so be prepared to share. Highly recommeded to go to. Pros: food, service Cons: parking, needing to wait- resturant not large enough more

Delicious! Outstanding! 4/24/2007

F & J Pine Tavern is one of the Bronx's best secrets! Food is AMAZING...it beats a lot of places on arthur avenue and mulberry street. The decor is adorable and service is great. Went last night....the salad was perfect, eggplant was soooo good, and also the brick oven pizza rocked! Prices are extremely reasonable also. If you come to the Bronx, this is a definite place to stop at! Pros: Delicious Food, Reasonable Prices, Adorable Ambience Cons: Nothing! more

Great food, great atmosphere. 12/26/2006

My family and I have been to this restaurant several times and everytime we get great food and service. The portions are out of control! You can not eat an entire entree by yourself in one sitting- so split or expect to take it home. Dinner time on weekends are particularly busy so make reservations. Pros: great food, large portions Cons: waiting when crowded more

Broiled Seafood Combo 11/21/2006

The food is great and you get plenty of it!! You will definitely leave with a ""doggy bag"". Large portions. Try the Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio...highly recommended. Pros: Food is great Cons: RESERVATIONS A MUST! more

Bronx Finest 4/27/2006

I love this restaurant. The food is great, just do not try to go on a Saturday night after 5pm. The ambiance is great, there is valet parking (for a tip) and if you want something nice but aren't in the mood to hit Manhattan, it's a good spot. I hate that they don't accept plastic. Cash only. Pros: Family Style, Nice ambiance, Great Food Cons: Cash only, CrowdedWeekend Nights more

It's a staple... 3/14/2006

I've been coming to F&J's for a long time now, celebrating birthdays, graduations, promotions, engagements, new hair color you name it! And after it had expanded the service became lacking and the food wasn't as good, someone noticed and made changes. It's a friendly place, where you may have to wait for a table, but you'll have good food at a good price. The only problems are their no reservations for parties under 10 policy and they don't accept Credit/Debit cards. Pros: Good for big crowds, Inexpensive, Good food Cons: No reservations, Long waits, CASH ONLY more

User review by hotellcali 3/26/2005

The food was great--the service ok-- the portions were huge but no credit cards! CASH ONLY! Pros: food Cons: cash only more

Great food at a great price 2/3/2005

The food is outstanding. The portions are so big, one pasta dish can feed two people. Pros: red sauce, seafood, pasta Cons: Marsala sauce more

An Experience 7/25/2004

I think the owners must have read the other reviews, and acted upon them. Our experience was 100% positive. The food was outrageous and plentiful. The service was friendly and accomodating. Though the restaurant is large, it has a cozy atmosphere. The crowd is real food lovers. If I lived close to this restaurant I'd be obese because the portions are huge and the food is delicious. On a Saturday night we arrived at about 9p. We were given a beeper and sent over to the large bar, filled with Sopranos and baseball memorabilia. We only waited about 15 minutes. There was a wedding going on. But you wouldn't have known/heard it unless you went to the rest room, which was across the hall from the ""banquet"" room. It was our first visit. Recommended by a relative who knows good food, too. We'll be back! Pros: Quantity, Quality, Service more

Don't waste your time 12/13/2003

Really folks. There are just too many REAL Italian restaurants in NYC, that this place strikes me as a huge joke played on honest patrons. Why do people have to submit to disorganized teenage management, zero customer service and garganutan portions of paste and oil? To rub elbows with the Bat Boy from the Yankees' dugout? Gimme a break. I won't call them ""restauranteurs"", but the ""impressario"" owners (think P.T. Barnum) of Pine Tavern have to be laughing all the way to the bank. Pros: Valet Parking Cons: Clueless management, Huge Portions more

A great neighborhood joint 8/18/2003

Frankie and Johnnie's has always been a restaurant serving delicious food to the neighborhood, but on August 14, 2003, during the blackout, they proved to be a great neighbor and friend to the community as well. During the chaos of the day, the owner opened up his days and feed us, the tired and stress weary community, for FREE. F & J is truly a guardian angle to the community, serving us some of the best Italian food in NY with a pinch of love. Thanks!!! more

Good Value, all but the service 1/6/2003

Good food, huge portions, cheap prices.... so what is wrong with this picture...? The service and wait time for a table is less than desired to say the least, so don;t go too hungry!! However, when you are finally seated and served, the food is very good, and the tab will not give you agita. Plus, chances are, you will have lunch the next day with your leftovers. One of the best bargins in NYC for sure. Pros: Good Food, Huge Portions, Excellent Value Cons: Crowded, Seating and Service more

A lesson in Cultural Competency! 10/30/2002

It was my mother's 52nd birthday and my sister and I decided to take her to this restaurant! It was recommended by a couple of friends. But I have to say that the service could have been better. My parents are from Ecuador and were not sure what certain Italian plates were! The waiter could have done a better job of explaining them instead of answering in a rude manner as if we were idiots for asking! Food was good, but I hope the next time we get a different waiter with a different attitude! more

The Neighborhood is Growing! 10/14/2002

The food is awesome, portions large, and the prices reasonable. I agree with the previous posting, that with the renovation it has lost some of the little neighborhood atmosphere. On my last visit we arrived around 9 on a Saturday, and although it wasn't crowded, the waitress acted like we were inconveniencing her, forgot bread, drinks, etc. One of the regular guy waiters picked up on it, and helped out. The parking guys outside were great, they even let us park the HD on the sidewalk in front. Pros: Real NY Italian Food Cons: Service Hit and Miss more
