Editorial review from Citysearch 12/13/2013

I ordered BBQ nachos with the chips on the side (I wanted everything exactly like it comes except for the chips) and the employee stated that she would put everything on the side to make it easier. I told her I didn't want it that way because it's too much of a hassle to have everything in a separate cup, I just want the chips on the side to avoid them getting soggy on my drive home. The food came ( in separate containers) and I stated that's not what I asked for. So the employee (right in front of me) took the cups and poured everything in front me in a carry out tray (no gloves/didn't wash her hands/even answered her cell phone). Handed it to me upside down with sauce dripping everywhere! So the older woman, tried to clean it up (after I complained about presentation) and after the first employee stated falsely, I was complaining about a shortage of meat. So the older woman said well you should've said that's how you wanted it the first time ( which I did ) and went on a rant about how I would still get the same amount of meat, which was not the issue. It's about presentation and good customer service. By the way, I never made a scene, and I even lowered my voice to avoid other customers hearing the issue and still received rude responses and horrible customer service and cold food. :( more

Interstate Bar-B-Q 4/21/2011

I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend this place to ANYONE! The food was fair-at best. The only hot item was the fries. The service was awful! From the reviews I'm reading, the only consistency is how bad the service is! more

Horrible all around 5/6/2009

I have never left no tip in my life until I went to Interstate. Service was ZERO stars. Food came out cold, and it was mediocre BBQ anyhow. Waste of time and money. Cons: everything more

Worst BBQ Place I ever visited! 2/6/2009

Pros: NOTHING Cons: EVERYTHING more

Forget what you've seen on tv....you won't find it on Jefferson Street! 11/11/2008

After seeing numerous television reviews and the popular Food Network television show we were so looking forward to the opportunity to ""Eat at Neely's"". Hosted dinner -30 people at Jefferson Street location while at a church convention. The experience did not at all match the warm and friendly media image. At a high level, the experience was nothing short of disappointing. more

Great food- hateful employees ( south Memphis location) 1/10/2008

I have eaten about 4 times at the Neeleys off the interstate going to Olive Branch, Miss. The people were nice there and the food was great. I guess it is in Desoto county?? Pros: great food Cons: rude, hateful employees more

Service stinks 1/4/2008

Went in for early lunch - waited in line to be seated, employee comes up, flips sign that says ""seat yourself"" with nary a word. we seated ourselves... waited forever for menus which were thrown at us, waited forever for drink orders to be taken and then served, again for order to be taken,,,,,,,, but surprise! the food came out reasonable quickly by someone other than our ""server"". we asked for catsup and hot sauce which never came. we got up and borrowed some from other patrons. food was fine but service ruined the experience. we waited forever for a bill, then waited at the register forever to finally be told that register was closed .. we paid in the takeout (i guess) area. too much bbq in memphis to put up with this kind of service. stay away... go to Rendezvous, Central BBQ, The Commissary... anywhere else. Trust me. Pros: Food Cons: Service, lack of friendliness, location (too hard to get to, not worth the trip) more

Everything but the OINK! 10/24/2007

On my BBQ quest to Memphis I stopped at Jim Neely's Interstate Barbecue on 3rd street. WOW-WOW-WOW. Need I say more? I had the Sampler Platter, billed as ?A Trip to Hog Heaven!? Pork Ribs, tender, cooked and seasoned just right. Beef Ribs, beefy and again cooked correctly. Links, just a little to mealy for my taste. Beef Brisket & Pork Shoulder, both beef and pork were right out of Memphis great ?Q?. B-B-Q Spaghetti, not my thing but good. Beans, Slaw, these items were very good, but who has the room for them? O ya had a side of Rib Tips, the real thing, perfect. The only down side was they sauce everything, I like my sauce on the side. Make sure to get the sweet potato pie, take out for later if need be. Pros: You cant go wrong. Cons: nothing. more

NOT....for me. 9/5/2007

Second trip to Interstate BBQ and .... pretty much the last. Service stinks. Got the order wrong and the ticket was incorrect also. As for the ribs and BBQ plate, the taste is not up the great reviews I've read. Average for the food and below average for everything else. more

Too Much Hype 7/9/2007

I arrived on a Saturday night, 6:30 pm. The place was about empty, maybe 10 customers in the place and my friends and I waited 10 minutes to be seated. I ordered the sampler plate; the pork and beef were dry, very dry, to dry to eat in fact. The sausage was ?crunchy? way too dry. It was as if all the food had been left in the pit way too long and dried out. Pros: Beef ribs, BBQ spaghetti & coleslaw were ok Cons: Meat was left in the pit way too long, dry and way too chewy and sausage should never be crunchy more

Outstanding BBQ 5/25/2006

I actually first had Jim Neely's BBQ at a layover at the Memphis Airport. I saw a superlong wraparound line, and many other restaurants right there with room to spare, so I though I had to get in that long line to see what the fuss was about. I was floored. This was handsdown the best BBQ EVERYTHING I've ever had. From the potato salad to the baked beans, to the wonderful juicy chicken......I'm now interested in scheduling my flights just so I can have that layover in Memphis and get some of that Q. And I a notoriously picky eater Pros: DELICIOUS, TASTY, INEXPENSIVE more

The Best in the Business!! 1/29/2006

Growing up in the Memphis area, I have had ample opportunity to sample Memphis-style barbeque and Neely's is the best-hands down!! The food is delicious and talk about service with a smile. The barbeque pasta is my favorite. Pros: great service, inexpensive, hot food Cons: crowded, area is run down more

Was it a bad night? 8/28/2005

I approached Interstate Barbecue with anticipation; it was my big stop on a trip from Texas to Indiana. I don't know if I hit it on a bad night , but I was disappointed. First , the service was terrible. Not just bad, or slow, but comically awful. I waited for almost 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged me, and then a lady only came by and slapped a menu down. After another 10 minutes, I got up and told her I was ready. A few minutes later, she came by and said, ""You ready?"" When I finally got the ribs, they weren't great. They didn't taste as if they were fresh off the pit, rather it seemed they had been re-heated. hey weren't what I had expected given all I'd heard about the place. I'll give it another try based on its reputation, but my visit was a huge disappointment. more

My favorite 6/13/2005

Memphians know barbecue and Interstate is the best. The service is quick, sauce is terrrific, the beans are the BEST I've ever eaten and the small pulled pork sandwich is just perfect. People are always friendly. A must-visit for tourists. more

Best Barbeque In The Known Universe 7/6/2004

I've eaten a lot of barbecue in places as diverse as Chicago, San Antonio, Kansas City and various points south, but Jim Neeley's is handsdown the best I've ever had. It is also an incredible value. A plate of rib tips to numerous to finish cost a mere 8 bucks. While in Memphis, you should visit the Rendevous, which while touristy still has decent dry ribs (and figures in one of my favorite John Hiatt songs), but save your appetite for this place. Pros: Inexpensive, parking off street, friendly service more

The best-Hands down. 11/2/2003

The first thing many people ask me when the find out I'm from Memphis is ""Where's the best bar b que?"". When I tell them Neeley's Interstate, the next question is ""Where's that at?"" This is the best kept secret in Memphis. A very low profile and low cost place that doesn't rely on hype to attract customers...the food will do that on it's own. The sandwiches are HUGE, and at under $5 a real bargain. My suggestion: try the bar-b-qued spaghetti and bring a cooler to take a gallon home with you. Pros: food, price, friendly Cons: location more

Tastey 8/20/2002

I went and bought your sauce from Cates meat market. You have the best I've tasted in Memphis. Pros: Marinate, Fast Service more

10.0 8/13/2002

Best in the world. Great taste, flavor, folks. This is really good food, they also have another place, with relatives called Neelys I think. Pros: flavor, inexpensive, value more
