Good again 5/21/2011

Hakatamon has had its ups and downs over the last few years. This was mostly due to changes in the kitchen and a paucity of waitstaff, but they seem to be back on target. I have had few complaints about the quality of sushi, but orders from the kitchen, even the miso soup have been quite bad in the past. I often order the Udon soup for lunch or dinner, and I have had a couple of poor experiences with warm (not HOT like it's supposed to be) broth in the pm. Service speed has improved significantly now that there is more then one person waiting on tables! more

Inexpensive, really tasty Japanese food 3/19/2010

I discovered Hakatamon last October after moving to the Cedar Hills area, and I've been going with my wife (and everyone I can get to come) many times since then. Of all the sushi I've had in Oregon this is the cheapest we've found for this level of well-structured sushi, making Hakatamon one of my regulars. Some of the other reviewers remark on the small staff, but it's a fairly small restaurant and every time I've been there they have had enough staff to keep up relatively well without getting haggard. Kudos to the sushi chefs for putting up with our huge orders. Once I watched as they received my party's ticket and the two of them literally jumped when they looked at it. But they went at it and finished quickly, and WE didn't jump when we received the bill (unlike some other Japanese restaurants I've been to). A solid recommendation. Pros: Cheap, well made sushi + delicious udon. Cons: Wait staff is slow and vaguely grumpy more

small staff - declining quality 2/25/2010

I've been going to this restaurant since June, and over the last few months, I've watched the quality decline. For some reason, only one server and one sushi chef have been working the last three times I've gone in. Last Monday night, there were more than 15 tables, with 30 people total in the place. That is too much for such a small staff. Plan on being there for well over an hour, and watch the staff work at breakneck pace trying to keep up. You cannot serve customers well this way. I think the owner will kill the restaurant if he doesn't change the way it's being managed. I like the food and think the servers are very nice, but I question going back anymore if things continue this way. Pros: food can be excellent Cons: only one server and sushi chef working at a time more

To Hakatamon's owner 2/24/2010

Owner of Hakatamon, what you're doing to your sushi chef and server is unethical. I was in there on Monday at 6:45pm and I ended being done at 8:15 and I only ordered sushi. Almost all your tables were full, there were over 30 people in your restaurant. But only one sushi chef and one server, shame on you for making them work like this. So when do they get a break? Your food is good but the service is poor and it's not the servers fault. Your floor gets stickier everyday, because they are so rushed all the time, the cleanliness of your restaurant is deteriorating. If you're too cheap to hire another sushi chef and server then you need to be there from 6-8pm. more

over-rated 2/20/2010

If you are really hungry, this is not a place to eat. You end up waiting an hour or so to get your appetizer. Servers are snobby too. If this is not conveniently located inside Uwajiyama, I would not go there. Cons: slow service, average taste more

good sushi, but no consistant. 8/20/2009

this place was one of my favorite restaurant use to be. some reason, it is not my favorite anymore. everytime, i had to wait for at least 40 mins to 1 hours to get a table, waiter and waitress is not so efficient, even food lost freshness sometimes. I hope this place have better management like before, and become my favorite place again. Pros: fresh food, good noodles Cons: long waiting, hard to request what you need extra more

OROSHI! 1/21/2009

love this place. their sushi servings are large, but for non raw eaters like myself, they offer several cooked dishes as well. my personal favorite is the oroshi, cold udon with shrimp tempura. the wait might be awhile on some days, but it doesn't take too long if you browse through the connecting market. more

Great quality, unpretentious setting 8/24/2008

As a long time sushi fans, we were delighted with Hakatamon's move to larger quarters. Located beside one of our favorite shopping places Uwajimaya, it is convenient and a treat. The prices are reasonable, and the attention to detail, the consistency of quality, and the variety of choice was exactly what we need. The chef makes his own udon, and if you are there about 2pm you will see him at work making your noodles. This is not for a once-yearly night out, since jeans are the dress code, and children who are well behaved are certainly welcome. But a taste of saki or beer is possible to round out a truly superb dining experience. Pros: Great quality food at a reasonable price Cons: If you are looking for fancy, this is not it. more

Not bad 7/10/2008

The sushi is not bad, larger then before, the vibe is pretty good. But not as authentic and fresh as Syun or Muruta IMO. Worth a try if you never been there before. more

One of the best sushi in town! 5/22/2008

Real Japanese Restaurant 5/9/2008

This is by far one of the better Japanese restaurants in town. After reading many of the other reviews on some of the other Japanese restaurants people are to easily fooled by the word ""japanese restaurant"". They rate them high not knowing the difference of bad and then good. Hakatamon has better food than most of the others in town. The noodles are made fresh daily. The sashimi is very fresh and has a good flavor with good consistency. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food. You can go to places like Sushi Hana or Sushi Boat and pay less to eat but the quality is far inferior to Hakatamon. After having been to Japan several times and been to many Sushi houses. This is about as close as you get to Japan in Portland. Pros: Larger than it used to be Cons: All Japanese restaurants do not have free refills on soda. more
