Great food, worth the occasional wait 3/11/2009

Don Cuco's is a local treasure for Toluca Lake residents. They've got a wide selection of Mexican dishes, and just about everything's great, so take a chance and try that thing that caught your eye on the menu! The service has always been friendly and helpful. The atmosphere inside is quite pleasant and quiet so that you can keep up a conversation without yelling. The only downsides are in the Don's popularity. The restaurant is on the small side, and going on a Friday or Saturday night means you'll probably be waiting a bit. The bar area is tiny and more than likely, you'll end up standing. Pros: Fantastic food, broad menu, decent prices Cons: Bad parking. Demand is sometimes higher than their capacity more

Great Mexican Food 1/19/2009

If you love great, traditional style Mexican food, this place is great! Large menu, multiple choices like three varieties of beans (black, refried, & whole pintos). I have been eating here for quite a few years and the food and the service has always been consistant. Yes, they get crowded at dinner time, especially on the weekends so plan on a wait if you don't have reservations. Parking can be brutal during busy hours since there is only street parking available and all the other restaurants and shops fight for the same parking on the street. I saw where another reviewer complained about the wait and went across the street to El Torito and was seated immediately. What does that tell you? They're not as busy because their food is not as good as Don Cuco's. I can't think of a ""GOOD"" restaurant I've gone to for dinner that someone wasn't waiting to get seated. Maybe for people who hate waits, they should eat at Denny's, I'm sure they must have some kind of offering that resembles Mexican food like a burrito. Someone else mentioned rude service and getting violently ill from the food. I've never noticed any examples of bad service, who knows, maybe the customer was being unreasonable and the staff reacted accordingly and I'm sure you could get ill from eating out but that's always a possibility no matter where you choose to eat. I know that neither myself or anyone in my family has ever gotten ill from eating there. So, all things considered, Don Cuco's provides, great Mexican food, great service, great drinks and great atmosphere all for a reasonable price. Pros: Great food, great service, large menu, good value, hand-made torillas Cons: Parking can be terrible during peak meal times, expect waits during busy periods more

HORRIBLE SERVICE 8/8/2008

If your idea of a great time out is being treated rudely with little regard as a customer. If you like waiting too long to be treated poorly, then by all means go to Don Cuco. Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

Great Mexican food 3/26/2008

I eat there a lot. Tostada's are great, fried burritto is excellent. Milanesa is one to get as well. The Cadillac's pack a whollop and taste great! It is a small place and you need to call at least 2 hours in advance for reservations, so there is usually a wait unless you eat at the bar (which I mostly do). Pros: Great drinks and food Cons: a wait is usual due to size more

Some of the Best Mexican Food Anywhere 12/27/2007

Living in Southern California with Mexico our neighbor to the south, we obviously have a large hispanic population here. These may also be some of the reasons why there are many, many restaurants catering to the lovers of Mexican cuisine. There are probably so many Mexican Restaurants that it would be difficult to proclaim any one of them ""The Best"" but I will say that the food at Don Cuco's at least rates up there with the best of them. The menu offers a large selection of choices from the basic tacos, enchiladas, and burritos to specials of the house like carne asada, chicken (in many forms), carnitas, to seafood like shrimp and crab offerings. They offer both refried beans and whole pinto beans (frijoles de la olla). Fresh made torilla chips and salsa and hand made tortillas to compliment your meal. Other reviewers have complained about the wait during rush hour. If you ever eat here you will understand why it 's crowded and why there is a wait, THE FOOD IS GREAT! One thing that any prospective diner should know, parking can be touchy, there is no on site parking and you must rely on local street parking. Because other restaurants and businesses suffer the same parking situation, sometimes it takes a little searching and a short walk to Cuco's after you park. In the end, if you like good Mexican food, you like a good selection to pick from and you can deal with a short wait for seating, please try Don Cuco's, you should be very satified. By the way, the Margaritas are great too! Pros: Every aspect of their establishment Cons: No on site parking, street parking only more

BEST MEXICAN FOOD!!!!!!!!!! 11/27/2007

DON CUCO'(burbank location) is the best mexican food i have ever had....i've eaten at a lot of places and never been so addicted...the chips are warm and salted just right and it comes with salsa and sour cream..what a great combo surprisingly! i ordered a mango marg(recommended) and crab enchiladas...what a great choice...fresh crab inside and the green sauce on top was terrific...but the best thing about DON CUCO'S is the white rice...its garlic rice..so good not overwhelming at all...if you have never been please go there you will not be disappointed. very moderate prices...given a lot of food for your money! by the way the service is great too; very friendly and helpful. Pros: food and service especially margs and white rice Cons: needs to be bigger; very narrow like a hallway but extends all the way back more

The best... 10/20/2007

Don Cuco's has the absolute best tortilla soup I've ever had. It's worth it just to go, have the free chips and salsa (and they are very quick to bring you more) and a bowl of this soup. Highly reccomended! Pros: food, decor, service Cons: it's a little cold inside... more

The best mexican food in the valley! 9/21/2007

I love Don Cuco. The atmosphere is fun, but the food is amazing. Just had dinner again there last night.! Take out is good too when you don't want to wait. The staff is friendly, and service is quick. Really one of my favorites...can't say enough about how good! Pros: food, service Cons: can be long wait, noisy more

Totally unremarkable food 6/18/2007

Watered down drinks and a melted mix of refried beans and cheese with the smallest sliver of avocado. Do yourself a favor and eat across the street. Pros: seating inside Cons: food, service, manager more

Don Cuco - doin' it well 5/1/2007

Don Cuco's is awesome. For the reviewers who disagree, you'll just have to enjoy a life of mediocrity across the street at that chain restaurant, El Torito...enjoy your picture menu. For those with elevated tastes, you're in for a treat. Keep in mind, this is a real place, so you may have to wait, you may be inconvenienced, but just grab a drink from the bar and chill til your table's ready. Then enjoy some of the best margarita's and mexican food in L.A. Pros: Don Cons: Cuco more

Mexican food at its best! 1/8/2007

So I stumbled upon this restaurant this past weekend....and am very glad I did. The food is excellent....the service was as well...we never ran out of anything...our chips were always full...my drink constantly being refilled, and we were seated promptly. Our bill was more then reasonable, so we tipped very well because we had some of the best service we have had in Los Angeles. Pros: Great food, great Service, great prices more

this is the greatest dark mexican place to have strong drinks and great food with friends 10/17/2006

I have been going here for almost ten years, and I have celebrated many milestones here. I call it my ""happy place"" - you can't be unhappy here unless you are just determined to be! the margaritas are amazing - ask for a schooner and you get a double sized one for a good price (I have no idea how much). I think it is important for a mexican restaurant to be dark, cozy and have great food. My recommendation is the enchiladas suiza - soo good. My husband gets the enchiladas sonora. Soups are amazing -albondigas or tortilla, and the shrimp and steak fajitas are great too. It's just a fun place to go and kids are okay there too because it is loud and no one can hear them! more

RUDE SERVICE!!!!! 8/28/2006

I was not only unimpressed by Don Cuco's below average cuisine...but the service was slow, and the bartenders were rude. Oh, by the way I got VIOLENTLY ill from this horrific restaurant...DO NOT GO...unless you want to deal with rude employees and illness. more

OUTSTANDING 4/1/2006

I HAVE BEEN TO THIS RESTAURANT SERVERAL TIMES AND FOR SOME REASON I CAN'T STOP COMING HERE I THINK IT'S BECAUSE OF THE INFAMOUS MARGARITAS, YOU HAVE TO TRY THEM, DON CUCO HIMSELF IS THE ""MARGARITA KING"". OH AND THIS IS NOT THE ONLY LOCATION YOU SHOULD DEFINATELY ALSO TRY BRUNCH AND BUFFET AT GLENDALES LOCATION. Pros: MARGARITAS, MARGARITAS, MARGARITAS Cons: MARGARITAS, MARGARITAS, MARGARITAS more

Mindblowing 1/29/2006

I visited this establishment in September whilst on vacation from Ireland. I wasnt expecting much but was totally blown away. The Margaritas were sensational Im now back in Ireland everyday pining for their margarita. Go with a local and get them to order the steak stuffed with shrimp (not on current menu) sensational. I cried when I had to leave that balmy Tuesday evening in September. Pros: Margaritas, Margaritas, Margaritas Cons: Crowded more

Great Little Restaurant with Beatuiful People 6/30/2005

The small restaurant is awesome, food tastes great and the service once you get your table is awesome! You have to wait for a table on teh weekends, but that is OK because you can enjoy the margaritas! These are best on the rocks, but most people get them blended. Also ask for the house special habanero sauce, it is really good and gives a real KICK. Only locals ask for the sauce normally, but it is great! Pros: FOOD, DRNIK, Atmoshpere Cons: long wait worth it more

Best margs in L.A. 5/22/2005

Expect a long wait, but it's worth the fabulous margaritas and the shrimp fajitas! more

good food 1/9/2005

Good mex food is hard to find, especially with resonable prices. I went with a friend and we shared the fajitas- it was MORE than enough for both of us. The margaritas as very good as well. The waiters were slow and not the friendliest and it was a little loud. But it hit the spot! Pros: yummy food, ambience, margaritas Cons: , noisy more

El Torito Here We Come! 8/15/2004

After reading a CitySearch review, my husband made reservations for my birthday. Upon arrival, we were told it would be a 15-20 minute wait! So why even bother to make reservations? Yes, the food is authentic, however the slow service and the noisy atmosphere does not create a pleasurable dining experience. However since the food was impressive, we still made reservations to take our out of town guests here. Upon arrival, they could not find our reservations. In fact, we were basically called liars by the manager - very disrepectful behaviour from a business man! Never once did we get an apology regarding their error, so we went across the street to El Torito where we were seated upon arrival. The waiter was humorous and attentive!! And the food - in a word - Scrumptious! So forget the latest trend and go to the ol' mainstay - El Torito! Pros: authentic Mexican Cons: , Noisy atmosphere, too crowded more

Great! 8/13/2004

I'm not understanding the reviews that suggest Don Cuco's is pricey....I found it be be quite INexpensive. The restaurant is great and has a really fun atmosphere. The margaritas are very strong. Don't attempt more than two unless you're a rockstar. The food was fantastic. The shrimp fajitas for 2 come with a huge amount of food and the shrimp were enormous. Will definitely come again with friends. Great for large parties! Pros: Inexpensive, Service, Margaritas more
