A solid choice for Brit Pub Food 4/21/2009

When in the Monterey area, you are given five options for the exhaulted British pub experience. I would most certainly say that this is the best of the five. While The Crown and Anchor pales in comparison to Pub heavyweights like Santa Monica's King's Head, it is as good as you're going to get on the peninsula. Pros: Scotch Selections, Curry Cons: Parking more

Pretty Good British Food 11/27/2008

I am not the biggest fan of British cuisine, but this wasn't a bad place for a decent meal. For those who love fish and chips, this is the place. \r \r The price is manageable and they have a decent beer selection. more

HIts the spot! 1/29/2008

If you're jonesing for a mostly-authentic English pub, I'd recommend the C&A. As another reviewer noted, it's not particularly conducive differently-abled people--it's downstairs from street level. It's a friendly place to relax with a pint, and the food's quite nice, as well. Parking can be a bit tedious, but don't give up--it's worth the trouble! Pros: Great fish and chips Cons: Parking more

Authentic to the Max 11/2/2006

Having spent two weeks in London just a month before we were in Guinness withdrawal. What a find in the heart of Old Monterey. The requisite fish and chips(minus the mushy peas), the pint after pint, the ambience of a room full of like-minded strangers- it was a fun experience, not just a very good meal. At almost half the cost of a similar experience near Covent Garden this was Anglophile Nirvana. Pros: Value, atmosphere, fun Cons: parking more

Best Fish and Chips on the Peninsula 11/25/2005

It is, after all, an English pub. The ample plate of fresh breaded cod and traditional chips make the C&A fish and chips the best around the area. Their version of Sheppard's Pie is rich and tasty. The surroundings, in a basement, are authentic looking English pub, but I wouldn't recomment it for wheelchair or walker bound customers. Service is excellent, helpful, quick, and unpretentious. A great place to grab a bite if you are in a hurry. The quantity and quality of the food are well worth the prices they charge...in fact, they are a bargain. Pros: English food, Ambiance, Service Cons: Access more

Great Food Too! 1/24/2003

We dine at the Crown & Anchor every time we visit the Monterey area. The beef pie and lamb shanks are rich, hearty and tasty while the fish and chips taste as fresh as the sea can deliver. A wonderful experience for the seasoned traveler or the young and the adventurous. Pros: charming elegance, great bar, quaint atmosphere Cons: dim lighting, habit forming more
