Editorial review from Citysearch 8/28/2013

The people at this place seem very dishonest. They are very friendly and nice, but I think that's just to distract you while they figure out how to get your money.\r \r I took my car in for the NC state inspection and it failed. So, then they got a bunch of money out of me to run a diagnostics test, then told me that I need to pay a few hundred in repairs*. Well, I picked up my car and took it to another station, and it passed without any problems. The folks at the second station told me that there's no way the code would have come up during the inspection at this station but not come up during their own test, after having driven the car just a few miles. I went back to the Chapel Hill Tire Center to inform them of this and ask for a refund on the diagnostics test and the failed inspection, and they refused.\r \r I feel like they have taken advantage of the fact that I am a woman who knows little about cars. It certainly was in their best interest to fail me for the inspection so they could charge me more for diagnostics and repairs. I don't trust them one bit. I recommend going anywhere else for inspection, especially if you are a woman who's not a car expert.\r \r *As a side note, the cost of the repairs that they told me I needed were quoted much lower at other auto shops. So, in addition to the dishonesty, I think they are overpriced. more

Great Service 3/13/2012

We brought our 05 Prius in with a check engine light on and car would not drive. Chapel Hill Tire in Carrboro was able to diagnose the vehicle and repair it in a timely manner and was cheaper then the dealer on a Hybrid battery replacement. I would recommend Chapel Hill Tire to all my friends. more

Not young, not gorgeous, not rich 10/30/2011

I'm not a young, gorgeous, or rich woman, so I was real surprised to hear things like, ""Come right now""; ""I can check this for you too""; ""Make yourself comfortable""; ""Please come back""..... Say what??? The repair I needed was quick and reasonably priced. Although I waited for my vehicle, I was delighted also to learn their courtesy van not only takes you home for free but brings you back for free too. Bottom line : I recommend Carrboro's Chapel Tire without reservation - even if they are blind (smile). more

They cost me $2000. 9/17/2011

I had these guys check over my used car before I bought it. They managed to miss the warning signs of a head gasket leak...this is a $2000 repair on a Subaru and one of the most common things to go wrong with this type of car. I assumed that they would know this since Subarus aren't exactly uncommon in Carrboro. Four months into my Subi ownership, their estimate for fixing the head gaskets alone was the same as getting the timing belt and the head gaskets fixed at AutoLogic across the street. CH Tire may brag about their excellent customer service, but I'll take honesty and high quality work over polish any day of the week. more

Watch out! 8/5/2011

I went to the Cole Park location for a dashboard warning light issue. I agreed to the diagnostic fee but knew in advance it would be the alternator from symptoms. 4 hours later (with an appointment!) I was told my 2 year old battery was shot and I needed a new drive belt (3 months old) and possibly a new alternator. I knew I was being taken for the battery and belt so I requested an estimate for the alternator only which turned out to be 1.5 to 2X higher than the estimate I got later from the shop where I had the actual work done (and they came in below their estimate!) I paid for the diagnostics ($100) and felt luck to have walked away. Did I also mention I had them change my oil just 3 weeks before the warning light issue and when I opened the hood of my car I found they had left an oily shop rag on my engine block? Lucky they didn't ruin my car! more

Very professional and courteous 9/9/2009

I was driving to my 8 am class at UNC when one of my front tires went flat. A tow truck driver from AAA took me to CHT and I am glad that he did. I've struggled to find a decent tire and auto store, but now that I've found CHT I will definitely be a repeat customer. I dropped my car off to be worked on and the shuttle drove me to campus for my 10 am class. I received a call just around an hour after I was dropped off saying that my car was finished. When I was done with my classes the shuttle even picked me up from campus to take me back! I was pleasantly surprised at the cost especially considering I received free transportation. They will absolutely see me the next time I have car issues or need regular maintenance. Pros: Fast, friendly, and fair charges Cons: None that I've seen more

Very professional shop 3/18/2009

I'm a typical female that knows nothing about cars! My car suddenly stopped running so I took advice from numerous co workers and called up Chapel Hill Tire in Carrboro. They were so curtious, contacted a towing company, had the car towed to their shop and called me with a diagnosis the same day! They even offered me an overnight rental car because it would take until the following day to fix my car. These guys are top notch professionals!! I recommend them to all my family and friends. Pros: best auto repair experience ever! more

extemely pleased with overall experience 2/2/2009

always great 1/29/2009

As a working mother, i have historically hated taking the minivan into get serviced. These guys are great. They aren't creepy like all the other car places. I don't feel like they talk down to me. They are honest. They are also considerate of my time. I can make an appointment and take the van in and get a shuttle ride to work. I recommend them to all my co-workers and friends. Pros: very nice and trustworthy Cons: closed saturdays more

Horrible 4/24/2008

Being a younger looking girl, people always assume that I know nothing about cars and am gullible... well I'm not. I first took my car to Chapel Hill Tire Co. and they gave me a 700$ estimate, which include a slew of things I knew I didn't need. Not only did they try and rip me off, the lady next to me paying for her repairs was about in tears because she made the mistake of saying just fix it for a small problem and didn't know they were going to charge so much. So I told them I'd take my car somewhere else and I went to Al's Garage. They called me with the estimate less than an hour after dropping it off and said it would be about 160$ (much better than that 700$ estimate!) and so I agreed and went to go pick it up later. When I got there it was only 150$, and they were very fair in the pricing. Definately go to Al's Garage if you're in the area. Very nice guys. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything, liars more

Terrible Customer Service 7/2/2007

I've been to Chapel Hill Tire Co. a couple of times and would not recommend them to anyone.\r \r The first to I went to CHT, I had some routine maintenance issue and my driver's side window, which was up, was difficult to get up once down. They said they could look at the window some other time and would do the routine maintenance and get my car back to me in an hour. When I got my car back, they didn't say anything and handed me the keys. When I got to my car, the window was rolled down and I couldn't get it back up at all. I hadn't been rolling it down for this reason, and it ended up costing $800 to fix elsewhere. They should have at least told me they rolled it down and couldn't get it back up, and offered me a clear tarp or something to cover it temporarily. \r \r I recently went in for a new tire, and they said to come back any morning early to fix a stripped bolt. When I came in at 7:30am, they asked me if I'd made an appointment -- which of course I hadn't, as they didn't tell me I'd need to, so I had to come in a week later with an appointment to get the bolt fixed. \r \r When I went in for problems with my power steering fluid, I explained that the steering wheel was very noisy when I was turning. The mechanic asked me, ""What do you want me to do? Check for a leak?"" in an aggravated tone. Well I don't know! What should you check for? I'd been told that just getting air in there can cause that problem, and not necessarily a leak, so I don't know what you need to do to fix that. You're the mechanic!\r \r They also keep trying really hard to push things on me I don't think I need (e.g. nitrogen filled tires). They never mentioned they had a shuttle, something I could have used the first few times I went there. \r \r Go somewhere else, please. more

Very very disappointed and feel used 7/24/2006

I recently came to chapel hill tire to get only a few things done to my car. When I showed up there I told the repair guy EXACTLY what I wanted. Nothing more-nothing less. He calls me back later that afternoon with an outrageous estimate for what I needed to get done. He had charged me over 200 dollars for things I didn't even need! And then they have the nerve to tell me that that's what I did ask to get done to my car. I may be a woman but I am not stupid. I ended up having to pay for it because they had already done the work. I feel cheated and used and I would never recommend them to anyone I know. They may look like they have great customer service on the outside but it's a shocking truth when you find out how they take people for their money. more

Very good auto care 6/19/2006

CHT is a very good place to have your car serviced. The store owner is a very nice guy to talk to and he is always helpful in figuring out any problems that I have with my car. Their prices for maintenance services are higher than other places. In addition, they are not as quick as other places like meineke unless you make an appointment or else you will need to wait for a while.\r Overall, CHT is a good place for auto care. more
