Been eating there for 19yrs. Normally a reliable choice for a great meal. On 4/24/10 the presentation was poor and the butterfly shrimp were puny, flavorless and overcooked. Quality control non-existent. The place is looking worn out too. more

ERRRRR 4/27/2010

This restaurant is easy to find on the main drag. We had fried fish-and it was good. It is family friendly and large enough for groups. more

What's all the fuss 2/1/2010

This place is so heavily reviewed and talked about so we went to see what all of the fuss was about. Decent lunch, nothing spectacular. Shabby and needs updating. Not a must. There are other much tastier places here. more

A little spendy but worth every bite!! 4/26/2009

Good service, excellent seafood, large portions. I really enjoyed the gulf shrimp, while my husband had the seafood platter - gulf shrimp, fried oysters, flounder, stuffed shrimp and stuffed crab. The time to go would be lunch for the specials or they have a dinner special if you have an early dinner. Excellent service in spite of the place being packed!! Pros: REALLY GOOD FOOD!! Cons: The cost more

VERY BAD EXPERIENCE....FOOD WAS COLD AND TOUGH 7/4/2008

We have not been back to South Padre since 2002. We then visited Blackbeards and loved it. We were very anxious to go back. We visited Blackbeards on June 25 after a long 8 hour drive around 9:00pm. I was VERY disappointed in the food in every way possible. First of all, our salads were watery. The ranch dressing was either watered down or the salad was soaking in water. We had a mess and a puddle in our salads. It was tasteless and disgusting. Our waiter could barely speak English so we got absolutely no communication or satisfaction. Our food, of which we had grilled shrimp and vegetables tasted old, tough, and everything was cold. The best part was the baked potato and that's not saying much. Even our strawberry daquari tasted watered down. Pros: only the name Cons: food is too expensive and very bad more

Skip it! 5/31/2008

My family has been visiting SPI annually since 1989. We have tried Blackbeards several times over the years and we always leave disappointed. The decor is great and gives you a pirate ship feel, but that's about all we like at Blackbeards. We had such a frustrating experience one year that when we got home I decided to write a letter to the manager/owner informing them of the problems in hopes things would improve. My letter was never responded to. A simple "thank you for taking the time to share your experience" would have been nice....but nothing. The prices are too high for the food and the service is lacking in every area. In 2004 we were seated and waited 15 minutes with no attention given our table, so we walked out. We have not been back since. We've visited so many other restaurants on the island over the years, but this is the one restaurant that we absolutely do NOT recommend. For seafood we can recommend Louie's Backyard and for Americana fare there is a Chili's just over the bridge in Port Isabel. more

Best Mahi Mahi 2/3/2008

I had a wonderful time. All the staff were very nice.Last year was my first time to South Padre. This year I will be getting married there and will defanitaly retun to this resturant.Wonderful inviroment to eat in. Pros: great fast service when seated Cons: waiting for a table more

High priced and not kid friendly 10/27/2007

We visited for the first time and were expecting higher prices but theirs were a bit higher than many others on the island and there were not as many menu choices. We have an 8 yr old and a 14 year old. The host did not offer a child's menu so we assume they didn't have one. We sat down, it was not crowded at all but the server didn't acknowledge us at all. We waited for a few moments and then we just got up and left since we didn't seem welcome. We left there and went to Zachry's where the food was good, prices were reasonable , the people were nice and our children were welcome! (we noticed lots of locals there) Pros: beautiful location Cons: price, service, chidren unwelcome more

Just okay 7/22/2007

My family and I have been going to South Padre for 5 years now. We eat at Blackbeard's every visit. I was quite disappointed this time. The prices are still pretty high, but the food is just average. The portions are smaller and the quality is nothing to brag about. more

avoid always 6/28/2007

The food at this so called rataurant is awful!!!!!!!!!! Best to avoid. There are plenty of good places to eat. We waited for over an hour for frozen, badly prepared slop. We expected to wait that long for a good meal, not one that was terrible. Look around there ar eplenty others. more

Best burgers! 6/28/2007

I totally disagree with all the other reviews! Blackbeard's is legendary on south padre, and part of its charm is it's care free, hole in the wall feel. The burgers and onion rings are the best I've ever had. Their stuffed jalapenos are amazing as well. I go back to South Padre specifically to go eat here! I've been going there since I was 4 years old and think that it is arogant to expect a 5 star restaurant because that is not what the appeal of this place is! more

Good prices, average restaurant 3/6/2007

Visited on 3/6/07 - I would agree with the reviews previous to mine that stated average doesn't cut it on the Gulf. I picked this place because it looked promising from the street, relatively new and not as cheesy in appearance as others in the area. I was a little disappointed when I got inside, it does not seem that the owners have kept up on maintenance, it appeared weathered and worn. Maybe I am a perfectionist but the worn off paint in the middle of our table bugged me. But aside from the cosmetics the food was average but to be fair the portions were large. Overall its average. more

a dismal experience 8/31/2006

Blackbeard's was highly recommended, so we were VERY disappointed in the food on 8-19-06. Everything was served lukewarm. The mashed potatoes were INSTANT. The fried entrees most certainly had been frozen then reheated--tasteless, dry, tough, chewy batter--even on the onion ring. It was the worst food I've ever paid to eat! We each ate maybe half, or less, of what was on our plates and then left. Worst of all, soon thereafter, 5 of the 7 in our party became violently ill with the full range of best-not-described intestinal ailments. We can't prove it, but we are positive we got sick from that awful meal at Blackbeards. We'll never go back there again! more

Try this place 7/1/2005

If you are looking for reasonably priced normal food, this restaurant will have something for you. The menu is large, and the portion sizes are enormous. The onion rings are excellent. THe only complaint out of 5 adults was that the seafood fettucine was dry (but the waitstaff quickly fixed the problem). Pros: good value Cons: noisy more

good value 5/20/2005

this place is pretty good considering all the pretty mediocre restaurants we've been to in SPI. the seafood isn't to die for, but hey, it's fried seafood...it's not a delicacy. they give you pretty huge portions here. the fried fish platter is two huge flounder filets with baked potato/fries and an onion ring and a salad. try the turbo pina colada with the 151 floater. it won't give you a buzz, but it's pretty tasty. Pros: good value, big portions, good service more

THE PLACE TO EAT... 6/24/2004

Since Blackbeards opened in the mid 70's it has been a great place for food. The locals made it great, the food made it the greatest. Huge onion rings to die for, all types of burger combos, great seafood, good chicken fried steaks, a trip worth making! The kids will love it as well. Pros: Variety of food, Great prices, Prompt service more

Great Burger . . . Not sure if . . . 5/30/2004

that is why you would normally go there though. Selection on seafood I thought was rather poor. Just normal selection of fish and shrimp, maybe I am expecting more from a gulf restaurant, maybe I am expecting too much. I consider the view and ambience rather ugly and crowded as they elect the "throw everyone in one large room idea" with an outer dining area. I thought the prices were pretty good though and for some reason there burger is absolutely excellant and well priced. I agree with a previous post though, average does not really cut it here, or shouldn't at least. Not a bad restaurant, but nothing to make you want to come here. more
