Amherst books is an academian's paradise, as to be expected when it shares a town with Amherst College, one of the best in the nation.
Whereas in most bookstores, you are confronted first with bestseller fiction, this store hits you first with a sale table full of obscure titles on the intricacies of Islam, gender studes, and class relations.
The store is seemingly organized according to a course catalog: African American Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, etc. But that's what makes it great. They seem to have one of every major book in each field. Large selection of travel guides too. Don't miss the downstairs. Magazine rack good. Not huge, but many unique and interesting titles.
